IBM unveils new virtual desktop solution in India

Global IT major IBM Wednesday unveiled a new virtual desktop that provides anytime, anywhere access to personal desktops from mobile devices, including tablets, net books, laptops and thin clients.
"The virtual desktop allows Windows or Linux desktops to be hosted and managed centrally, lowering the cost and complexity of managing personal computer environment through quick deployment of new applications, software updates and reducing the need for help desk," IBM's Indian subsidiary said in a statement here.
As a first in series of integrated solutions for mid-market businesses, the virtual desktop brings virtual computing to mid-sized firms looking for agility without additional capital investment.
"The virtual solution addresses the business risks midsize companies face by helping them to achieve a secured work environment at a lowered cost of ownership," said Ingram Micro India Ltd director Bimal Das said.
Ingram Micro is one of the technology partners of IBM India, which will provide the solution to end-users through system integrators.
"The new generation's mobile, hyper-network-connected workforce expects that basic desktop services follow them wherever they go. The new version responds to users need for flexibility and portability -- delivering full USB 2.0 peripheral support for integrated offline and online interface," IBM India country manager Anoop Nambiar said.
The virtual desktop 2.2 version includes high-definition multimedia support and enhanced work-anywhere capability with features that simplify management and drive down IT management costs.
As a single console, users of virtual desktop can also access USB drives, keyboards, printers, scanners and barcode readers.
