Pwn2Own 2013 Result: Chrome, Firefox, IE, Adobe Reader, Flash & Java Owned Only Safari Survived 

Couple of months ago we have talked about 'Pwn2Own 2013' hacking contest sponsored by HP TippingPoint, ZDI and Google where the most famous and widely used browsers have to face challenges. Now the result of this long awaited security competition has came which is showing that the entire browser security landscape can change in a single day, as browsers thought to be secure are proven to be otherwise. Of the Big Four browsers, only Apple's Safari has so far survived the onslaught of the browser-breakers where Chrome, Internet Explorer 10 and Firefox all fell to the mercy of the hackers. Not only browsers but also three other popular applications that is Adobe Reader, Flash Player and yet again Java fallen victim to hackers at 'Pwn2Own'. And for Java it was a true disaster as Java fell three times, though under the contest rules, only the first attacker was due to win the $20,000 prize. Vupen, a renowned security research firm based in France, cracked both Firefox and Internet Explorer. It roughly explained the attack in a tweet, “We’ve pwned Firefox using a use-after-free and a brand new technique to bypass ASLR/DEP on Win7 without the need of any ROP.” This bug hint leads them winning $100,000 for finding a huge hole. Again in a tweet, Security firm Vupen explained “We’ve pwned MS Surface Pro with two IE10 zero-days to achieve a full Windows 8 compromise with sandbox bypass.” Lastly, U.K.-based security firm MWR Labs cracked Chrome and also gained full control of the operating system, this time Windows 7. It also “demonstrated a full sandbox bypass exploit.” The company explained in a blog post that it found a zero-day in Chrome “running on a modern Windows-based laptop.” It was able to exploit the vulnerability by performing a very similar attack to what took down Facebook, Microsoft, and a number of other well-known companies: It had the laptop visit a malicious website.

The total damage to the prize fund comes out at a whopping $480k. With HP's announcement that everyone will get paid for each attack, the prize monies will be divvied up as follows:-

  4. Nils & Jon: Chrome = $100k

As you all know that the main motive of these contest is to make applications, software more safe and secure while figuring out hidden vulnerabilities  Here also for Pwn2Own the security holes figured out by the above experts have already been submitted and taken carefully by those organization  along with that, the expected patch for the browsers have already been released. Pwn2Own 2013 -Hack Major Web-browser, Adobe Reader, Flash or Java & Earn in Million Dollars 

Since the last two years the Pwn2Own hacker contest has become an important fixture in the world of testing the security of software applications, operating systems and hardware devices. In last two years we have seen several hackers, security professionals have expressed their enthusiasm and joined Pwn2Own where four major and widely browser's security get compromised, in order to make applications, software more safe and secure. Last year we have reported how different hackers across the globe taken part in Pwn2Own and successfully hacked Google Chrome, IE & Firefox, and earned millions of dollars. But the contest of this year has some more twist than before as, HP TippingPoint and Google, sponsor of Pwn2Own, has made clear that it is expanding the focus of the competition beyond browsers. Also, Pwn2own 2013 will include $560,000 in prize money for demonstrations of exploits in the major web browsers, Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash or Oracle Java

Contest Dates:-

The contest will take place the 6th, 7th, and 8th of March in Vancouver, British Columbia during the CanSecWest 2013 conference. Rules & Prizes:-

HP ZDI is offering more than half a million dollars (USD) in cash and prizes during the competition for vulnerabilities and exploitation techniques in the below categories. The first contestant to successfully compromise a selected target will win the prizes for the category.

    • Microsoft Internet Explorer, either
      • IE 10 on Windows 8 ($100,000), or
      • IE 9 on Windows 7 ($75,000)

The targets will be running on the latest, fully patched version of the Windows 7, 8, and OS X Mountain Lion. All targets will be installed in their default configurations, as this is how a majority of users will have them configured. As always, the vulnerabilities utilized in the attack must be unknown and not previously reported to the vendor. If a sandbox is present, a full sandbox escape is required to win. A given vulnerability may only be used once across all categories.
Upon successful demonstration of the exploit, the contestant will provide HP ZDI a fully functioning exploit and all the details of the vulnerability used in the attack. In the case that multiple vulnerabilities were exploited to gain code execution, details about all the vulnerabilities (memory corruption, infoleaks, escalations, etc.) leveraged and the sequence in which they are used must be provided to receive the prize money. The initial vulnerability utilized in the attack must be in the registered category.
Along with prize money, the contestant will receive the compromised laptop and 20,000 ZDI reward points* which immediately qualifies them for Silver standing.

DHS & US-CERT Recommended to Disable Java in Web Browsers Unless It's Absolutely Necessary

The running time is proving to be the worst period for Java, as it has been walking under serious security issues. Yet again security researchers have pointed out a zero-day security vulnerability in the Java program that hackers are exploiting. The exploit takes advantage of a vulnerability left open in Java 7 Update 10, released in October last year. It works by getting Java users to visit a website with malicious code that takes advantage of a security gap to take control of users' computers. Thus how Java is being used by cyber criminals to infect computers with malware. Oracle, hasn't specified the number of users who have downloaded Java 7 Update 10. However, Java runs on more than 850 million computers and other devices. When Oracle released Update 10, so it is predictable that more than 850 million devices run by Java is under threat. The exploit was first discovered by French researcher Kafeine, who claimed to have found it running on a site registering hundreds of thousands of page views daily. From that site, immediately that vulnerability and a large number of effected devices has been spotted in the wild. In Java 7 Update 10 the creator of Java, Oracle added several security control and fixed older bugs and promised more security enhancement, but its very unfortunate that Oracle failed to keep their promise. What ever after this newly discovered 0-day hole spotted wildly, Oracle Security Alert CVE-2013-0422 states that Java 7 Update 11 addresses this (CVE-2013-0422) and an equally severe, but distinct vulnerability (CVE-2012-3174). Immunity has indicated that only the reflection vulnerability has been fixed and that the JMX MBean vulnerability remains. Java 7u11 sets the default Java security settings to "High" so that users will be prompted before running unsigned or self-signed Java applets. It "strongly recommends" that Java SE 7 users upgrade immediately to avoid all kind of security hazards. 

After seeing all the drama, many of you have failed to keep trust in Java, and you all will be relieved when you will gone through the security advisory of CERT (Computer Emergency Response Team) where they have clearly instructed to disable Java in your popular web-browser. In their official release CERT said "Unless it is absolutely necessary to run Java in web browsers, disable it as described below, even after updating to 7u11. This will help mitigate other Java vulnerabilities that may be discovered in the future."

You will see similar advice in the advisory posted on the official DHS US-CERT website where DHS also suggested to disable Java until and unless it is that much necessary. "To defend against this and future Java vulnerabilities, consider disabling Java in web browsers until adequate updates are available. As with any software, unnecessary features should be disabled or removed as appropriate for your environment." - said U.S. CERT in their advisory.

It's became a very common scenario that hackers targets banks, payment gateway and other financial sectors. Sites like Paypal, Visa, Master Card were among those common victims who used to face massive round of cyber attacks. Past two years hacktivist managed to interrupt the service of those websites many times. Here also in the beginning of 2013 almost same situation took place, when the official blog of Master Card get hacked and defaced.  It was the Saturday evening when a hackers collective group named "Syrian Electronic Army" managed to breach and get access inside Master Card blog. I am sure that all our readers will be shocked after hearing the way of intrusion. In the platform of the blog, Master Card was using an older version of WordPress (Ver. 3.3.2) which has several critical vulnerabilities like XSS, file uploading, CSRF and so on. Exploiting those loopholes the hacker managed to get access inside the blog and defaced one of the page of the giant in international financial services company's blog. Though WordPress have released a security patch and also version 3.5, but it's quite unfortunate and shocking that Master Card did not even patched their older version for which their system get penetrated. It is truly unbelievable that sites like Master Card is so careless about basic security and counter measure of cyber attack. According to sources Syrian Electronic Army used  the CSRF exploit of WordPress which is said to be available on the Internet and allows an attacker to add a new administration user. This is a possible explanation of how the Syrian Electronic Army managed to hack and deface the blog. After this incident occurs Master Card immediately updated the version of WP and closed those back doors. Still the the defaced and cached version of the  blog can be viewed on Google’s Web Cache

Yahoo Mail Hit By XSS Exploit Putting 400 Million Users At Risk

Yet again mistrust growing in between the large number of Yahoo users, as it has been continuously failed to protect its customers from cyber attack. Late in last year we have seen that the two major services of Yahoo get compromised, which affects millions of its registered users across the globe. First it was Yahoo Voice, which get hacked while putting 450K users at high risk. Then it was the time for Yahoo Mail, where few Egyptian hacker figured out serious XSS vulnerabilities in Yahoo Mailing service  that lets attackers steal cookies from Yahoo Webmail users. Later cyber criminals made product while exploring that loop holes, that so called product or widely known as exploit was made available at high price in underground market and forums. As expected Yahoo immediately patched these loopholes, but now it seems they did not learn lesson from the decent past. 
You all may be wondering! what happened? Again the security of Yahoo fallen victim in front of hackers.  Shahin Ramezany, a hacker and independent security researcher have figure out a DOM-Based XSS vulnerability in Yahoo Mail that is exploitable in all major browsers. Ramezany tweeted about this issue whihc links to an YouTube video, where he demonstrated the hack. Shahin Ramezany also claimed that the exploit have put more than 400 Million yahoo users at risk


As soon as this story get spotted, Yahoo immediately responds the matter, in their official release a Yahoo spokesman said "We’ve been looking into it and the US have now confirmed that they are investigating too. They will be in touch if there is a comment – otherwise I recommend that if users are concerned then they should change their passwords immediately." 

Later Yahoo said that thy have plugged the security hole. In their statement the spokesperson added, “At Yahoo! we take security very seriously and invest heavily in measures to protect our users and their data. We were recently informed of an online video that demonstrated a vulnerability. We confirm that the vulnerability has been fixed. In addition, we are investigating recent reports of increased abusive traffic and will work diligently to fix any vulnerabilities that are found. Concerned users are encouraged to change their passwords to a safe password that combines letters, numbers, and symbols.”

But this issue did not get completely resolved, as immediately after the fix release of Yahoo, Shahin Ramezany said that the fix is not good enough, and the Yahoo Mail exploit is still active. In his twitter he said "not effective enough and users are still [at] risk," since the proof-of-concept code can be easily tweaked to continue attacks.

Developers at Ruby on Rails are warning its users regarding a Sql Injection flaws which has affected all the current version of Ruby on Rails web framework. While exploiting the vulnerability an attacker can inject and even execute malicious codes into the web application. "Due to the way dynamic finders in Active Record extract options from method parameters, a method parameter can mistakenly be used as a scope. Carefully crafted requests can use the scope to inject arbitrary SQL," explained the Rails framework's developers. As soon as this vulnerability has been spotted in the wild, the maintainers of Ruby on Rails have released new versions that addresses the flaw, versions 3.2.10, 3.1.9 and 3.0.18. In their advisory Ruby on Rails team recommends that users running affected versions, which is essentially anyone using Ruby on Rails, upgrade immediately to one of the fixed versions mentioned earlier. "We're sorry to drop a release like this so close to the holidays but regrettably the exploit has already been publicly disclosed and we don't feel we can delay the release," Rails developer concluded. 

The original problem was disclosed on the Phenoelit blog in late December where the author applied the technique to extract user credentials from a Ruby on Rails system, circumventing the authlogic authentication framework. While talking about the vulnerability discloser of Ruby on Rails, we would like to remind you that, this is not the first time, earlier in 2012 a Russian security researcher named Homakov has found that Github has succumbed to a public key vulnerability in Ruby on Rails which is allowing a normal user to gain administrator access into the popular Rails Git.

Ruby on Rails runs on the general-purpose programming language Ruby, which predates it by more than a decade. Rails is a full-stack framework, meaning that it gives the web developer the ability to gather information from the web server, talk to or query the database, and render templates out of the box. As a result, Rails features a routing system that is independent of the web server. Ruby on Rails emphasizes the use of well-known software engineering patterns and principles, such as Active record pattern, Convention over Configuration, Don't Repeat Yourself and Model-View-Controller.

Microsoft Security Advisory (2794220) Remote Code Execution Vulnerability in Internet Explorer Fixed

The Redmond based software giant Microsoft issued an urgent security advisory to address vulnerabilities in its popular web-browser that is Internet Explorer.  Few of days new “zero day” security hole in IE was discovered which could potentially allow hackers to take over control of your system when all you've done is visit an infected website. The vulnerability affects IE versions 6, 7 and 8. Though the latest versions of the browser, that means IE 9 and 10, are not affected. “An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the current user.” Microsoft said in its statement. The statement went on to say, “an attacker could host a website that contains a webpage that is used to exploit this vulnerability. In addition, compromised websites and websites that accept or host user-provided content or advertisements could contain specially crafted content that could exploit this vulnerability.”
On its advisory Microsoft first issued warning of the problem, which involves how IE accesses "an object in memory that has been deleted or has not been properly allocated." The problem corrupts the browser's memory, allowing attackers to execute their own code. Security vendor Symantec described such a scenario as a "watering hole" attack, where victims are profiled and then lured to the malicious site. Last week, one of the websites discovered to have been rigged to delivered an attack was that of the Council on Foreign Relations, a renowned foreign policy think tank.

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), widely known as a drone has always been gone through with several controversies in case of both defense and cyber security. Yet again several question arises regarding the security system and the control algorithms of drone. According to the Pentagon’s premier science and technology division a a “pervasive vulnerability” have been found in the robotic aircraft of drone. The control algorithms for these crucial machines are written in a fundamentally insecure manner, says Dr. Kathleen Fisher, a Tufts University computer scientist and a program manager at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. There’s simply no systematic way for programmers to check for vulnerabilities as they put together the software that runs our drones, our trucks or our pacemakers.
In our homes and our offices, this weakness is only a medium-sized deal: developers can release a patched version of Safari or Microsoft Word whenever they find a hole; anti-virus and intrusion-detection systems can handle many other threats. But updating the control software on a drone means practically re-certifying the entire aircraft. And those security programs often introduce all sorts of new vulnerabilities. “The traditional approaches to security won’t work,” Fisher tells Danger Room.
Fisher is spearheading a far-flung, $60 million, four-year effort to try to develop a new, secure way of coding and then run that software on a series of drones and ground robots. It’s called High-Assurance Cyber Military Systems, or HACMS. For detailed information about this story click Here

While talking about drone and its security we would like to give you reminder that in 2011 we came to know that a stealthy key-logger has hit the U.S. Drone logging pilots’ every keystroke as they remotely fly missions over Afghanistan and other war zones. Later Iran took responsibility of that cyber attack. Serious security hole has been discovered in Samsung smartphones. According to a member of XDA-Developer forum named 'alephzain' the vulnerability exists in the Samsung Galaxy S III, Galaxy S II and Galaxy Note II along with several other Samsung devices. As per sources the vulnerability is marked as "severe". This vulnerability could provide a malicious way for remotely downloaded apps to read user data, brick phones and perform other malicious activities. In other words, this hole could allow a malicious app free reign over your smartphone’s memory, and basically take complete control of your device. Prepare tin foil hats. Another XDA-Developer user, supercurio says Samsung has been notified of the security hole, but had not yet acknowledged the issue. That is until this morning when Samsung dropped word to Android Central that they are “currently in the process of conducting an internal review” in reference to the security hole. Supercurio says the potential exists for millions of devices to be in harms way, especially those with Exynos 4210 and 4412 processors that use Samsung code. Another XDA user, Entropy512 adds “this exploit changes things — there is a no root exploit that can be used by an app straight from the market, in the background, with little to no user intervention.”

Yet again Microsoft Internet Explorer have fallen victim in front of hackers. Spider.io a website analytics firm has discovered a security vulnerability in all current versions of Internet Explorer that allows attackers to trace mouse cursors anywhere on users' screens even if the Internet Explorer window is minimized  The vulnerability is particularly troubling because it compromises the security of virtual keyboards and virtual keypads. Spider.io said -The vulnerability is notable because it compromises the security of virtual keyboards and virtual keypads.
As a user of Internet Explorer, your mouse movements can be recorded by an attacker even if you are security conscious and you never install any untoward software. An attacker can get access to your mouse movements simply by buying a display ad slot on any webpage you visit. This is not restricted to lowbrow porn and file-sharing sites. Through today’s ad exchanges, any site from YouTube to the New York Times is a possible attack vector. Indeed, the vulnerability is already being exploited by at least two display ad analytics companies across billions of webpage impressions each month. As long as the page with the exploitative advertiser’s ad stays open—even if you push the page to a background tab or, indeed, even if you minimize Internet Explorer—your mouse cursor can be tracked across your entire display.

Spider.io has set a demo page to demonstrate how the vulnerability is working. According to sources, Microsoft Security Research Center has acknowledged the vulnerability, but unfortunate that Microsoft are not in a hurry to patch this vulnerability in existing versions of its popular browser. "There are no immediate plans to patch this vulnerability in existing versions of the browser."  said MSRC

As evidenced by the amount of suicides—particularly of gay teens—in the last few years, cyberbullying can have a devastating effect on the victim and their family. Because of the nature of cyberbullying, it is difficult to tell if your child is involved—either as a victim or an aggressor.

Prevent Your Child From Becoming a Cyberbully

There are some simple ways to prevent your child from becoming a cyberbully. Be a model for them. Don’t use abusive language when referencing workmates, other parents or kids. Make sure the language you use around your child does not lead them to believe it is alright for them to use abusive language. Children look to their parents as guides for how to operate in the world. Make sure, as a guide, you're pleasant, kind and non-aggressive.
Keep an eye on your child’s social networking profile. See if they are getting involved in harassing other children. This could be a precursor to them becoming the primary bully themselves. If you do find evidence they are harassing others, do not let it stand. Talk to them about it. Explain the better, healthier ways to deal with their aggression or anger towards their friends and classmates. Make sure they understand that harassment is not an acceptable type of behavior. There are ways to assure your child's social network site can't be hacked.

Cyberbullying is not exclusive to hateful or aggressive comments or messages. Many kids have their social networking site hacked, and the hacker shares embarrassing information or posts things the actual user would not post. There is software to track the sites that have been accessed on your computer and that can help you to protect your child against identity theft. Utilize the tools available to make sure your child has not stolen another kid’s identity.
The best way to stop cyberbullying is to prevent your child from ever becoming one in the first place. Have open conversations about bullying and its effects on others. Show through example the best way to solve problems is not through threats and anger but through calm and reasoned action.

'Dockster' A New Mac Malware Targeting Apple Users Found on Dalai Lama Related Website

Researcher at F-Secure blog has identified that A new piece of malicious software targeted at Apple users has been found on a website dedicated to the Dalai Lama. According to blog post by F-Secure -the website related to Dalai Lama is fully compromised and is pushing new Mac malware, called Dockster, using a Java-based exploit. Dockster tries to infect computers by exploiting a vulnerability in Java, CVE-2012-0507. The vulnerability is the same one used by the Flashback malware, which first appeared around September 2011 and infected as many as 600,000 computers via a drive-by download. Flashback was used to fraudulently click on advertisements in order to generate illicit revenue in a type of scam known as click fraud. Apple patched the vulnerability in Java in early April and then undertook a series of steps to remove the frequently targeted application from Macs. Apple stopped bundling Java in the 10.7 version of its Lion operation system, which continued with the company's Mountain Lion release. In October, Apple removed older Java browser plug-ins in a software update.
But still the matter of relief is that current versions of OS X are not vulnerable; users who have disabled the Java browser plug-in are also not vulnerable. F-Secure researcher Sean Sullivan said Dockster is “a basic backdoor with file download and keylogger capabilities.” Meanwhile F-Secure’s Sullivan, also said that the Dalai Lama’s site is also serving a Windows-based exploit for CVE-2012-4681, the Agent.AXMO Trojan. The Trojan exploits a Java vulnerability that allows remote code execution using a malicious applet that is capable of bypassing the Java SecurityManager.

Bad news for those who are using Samsung and Dell-branded printers, as in an advisory U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US CERT) issued an warning that a hard coded administrative account could allow remote attackers to take control of their device. According to the vulnerability note (VU#281284)Samsung printers contain a hardcoded account that could allow a remote attacker to take control of an affected device. Samsung printers (as well as some Dell printers manufactured by Samsung) contain a hardcoded SNMP full read-write community string that remains active even when SNMP is disabled in the printer management utility. Manipulating the above vulnerability a remote, unauthenticated attacker could access an affected device with administrative privileges. Secondary impacts include: the ability to make changes to the device configuration, access to sensitive information (e.g., device and network information, credentials, and information passed to the printer), and the ability to leverage further attacks through arbitrary code execution. 
Solution:-
Samsung and Dell have stated that models released after October 31, 2012 are not affected by this vulnerability. Samsung and Dell have also indicated that they will be releasing a patch tool later this year to address vulnerable devices.
Block Port 1118/udp
The reporter has stated that blocking the custom SNMP trap port of 1118/udp will help mitigate the risks.

Restrict Access:
As a general good security practice, only allow connections from trusted hosts and networks. Restricting access would prevent an attacker from accessing an SNMP interface using the affected credentials from a blocked network location.

While talking about vulnerabilities in Printer, then we would like to remind you that late in last year Columbia University Researchers have discovered a vulnerability in some Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet printer lines that could allow attackers to install a modified firmware to steal information, run attacks from within a network or cause physical damage to the printer. Those products were generally priced between $5-$500, but today I will talk about an expensive product, which listed itself top on the black market. I am talking about a new cross-site scripting exploit that enables attackers to steal cookies and access Yahoo email accounts. According to the blog post of Krebs on Security -A zero-day vulnerability in yahoo.com that lets attackers hijack Yahoo! email accounts and redirect users to malicious Web sites offers a fascinating glimpse into the underground market for large-scale exploits. The exploit, being sold for $700 by an Egyptian hacker on an exclusive cybercrime forum, targets a “cross-site scripting” (XSS) weakness in yahoo.com that lets attackers steal cookies from Yahoo! Webmail users. Such a flaw would let attackers send or read email from the victim’s account. In a typical XSS attack, an attacker sends a malicious link to an unsuspecting user; if the user clicks the link, the script is executed, and can access cookies, session tokens or other sensitive information retained by the browser and used with that site. These scripts can even rewrite the content of the HTML page. The hacker posted the following video to demonstrate the exploit for potential buyers. 


“I’m selling Yahoo stored xss that steal Yahoo emails cookies and works on ALL browsers,” wrote the vendor of this exploit, using the hacker handle ‘TheHell.’ “And you don’t need to bypass IE or Chrome xss filter as it do that itself because it’s stored xss. Prices around for such exploit is $1,100 – $1,500, while I offer it here for $700. Will sell only to trusted people cuz I don’t want it to be patched soon!” -said the hacker.  
In response Ramses Martinez, director of security at Yahoo!, said the challenge now is working out the exact yahoo.com URL that triggers the exploit, which is difficult to discern from watching the video. “Fixing it is easy, most XSS are corrected by simple code change,” Martinez said. “Once we figure out the offending URL we can have new code deployed in a few hours at most.”

Users who have their websites hosted by GoDaddy again fallen victim of cyber attack. Researcher at ShopsLabs reported that cyber criminals have managed to hack the DNS records of GoDaddy hosted websites and thus they infected a large number of GoDaddy users with ransomwareFraser Howard, a Principal Virus Researcher of SophosLabs stated that the hackers behind these attacks are “exploiting DNS by hacking the DNS records of sites, adding one or more additional subdomains with corresponding DNS entries (A records) referencing malicious IP addresses. The legitimate hostname resolves to the legitimate IP address, but the added sub-domains resolve to rogue servers.” By doing so, the criminals are able to set-up URLs that seem legitimate, potentially sneaking through security filtering systems and duping Internet surfers into believing they are harmless, he explained in a Friday blog entry. In some instances, multiple subdomains were added to each user’s account, with each of them redirecting viewers to at least one malicious IP address.  
Go Daddy customers who wish to check they have not been affected by these attacks should check their DNS configuration according to the Go Daddy support page. 

As soon as the attack has been spotted in the wild, GoDaddy released a statement included below :-

"Go Daddy has detected a very small number of accounts have malicious DNS entries placed on their domain names. We have been identifying affected customers and reversing the malicious entries as we find them. Also, we're expiring the passwords of affected customers so the threat actors cannot continue to use the accounts to spread malware.
We suspect that the affected customers have been phished or their home machines have been affected by Cool Exploit as we have confirmed that this is not a vulnerability in the My Account or DNS management systems.
Go Daddy highly recommends that US- and Canada-based customers enable 2-Step Authentication to help protect their accounts. Details on how to set up this feature are located at http://support.godaddy.com/help/article/7502/enabling-twostep-authentication.

Yet again the famous micro blogging site Twitter faced security challenge. Tuesday a huge number of Twitter users across the globe received  emails warning that their account may have been compromised and their passwords had been reset as a precautionary measure to prevent unauthorized access. In the e-mail, the microblogging company noted: "Twitter believes that your account may have been compromised by a Web site or service not associated with Twitter. We've reset your password to prevent others from accessing your account."

It remains unclear how many have been affected by the password reset e-mail or what's caused the mass e-mailing of its users. A post by TweetSmarter on Wednesday noted that in some cases when "large numbers of Twitter accounts have been hijacked," the company sends out these e-mails en masse, even sending messages to accounts that may not have been affected by any hack or hijack to err on the side of caution. The emails are apparently legitimate, though they were sent to more than victims of compromised accounts. The mass email coincided with incidents involving several high-profile accounts, including at least one account belonging to the BBC. Other media organisations, such as the TechCrunch blog, reported being warned. 
"We’re committed to keeping Twitter a safe and open community," reads a notice the company issued earlier Thursday. "As part of that commitment, in instances when we believe an account may have been compromised, we reset the password and send an email letting the account owner know this has happened along with information about creating a new password. This is a routine part of our processes to protect our users. "In this case, we unintentionally reset passwords of a larger number of accounts, beyond those that we believed to have been compromised. We apologize for any inconvenience or confusion this may have caused."
Twitter officials have not disclosed how many uncompromised accounts had passwords reset, nor any more on the attack that led to those actions. The social media site currently has 140 million active usersSome victims reported having select tweets deleted, while others started sending out spam.
