Willysy Malware Infects More than 6 Million WeSites

 
In less than two weeks, a malware injection that targets e-commerce Web pages has ballooned from 90,000 infected pages to more than 6 million. Malware willysy The malware, called willysy, exploits a vulnerability in a popular online merchant platform, osCommerce, according to Web application security provider Armorize, of San Francisco.
When the company initially reported the injection on July 24, it found 90,000 infected pages. When it took another look at the malware on August 3, it found the injection had spread to some 6.3 million pages.

Although the identity of the perpetrators of the attacks by the malware could not be identified by Armorize, the company did trace the forays to eight IP addresses, all located in the Ukraine.
Armorize explainedthat the attacks exploit three known vulnerabilities in version 2.2 of osCommerce. The exploits allow the attackers to place an invisible frame (iFrame) on the page and then inject malicious code (JavaScript) into the page, where it will infect visitors to the online store.
Once the infection makes it to shopper's computer, it targets vulnerabilities in Java, Adobe Reader, Windows Help Center and Internet Explorer. Although the flaws in those programs targeted by the infection are known and have been patched, the attackers are betting that the user hasn't patched all the programs.
Even the exploitation of osCommerce itself depends on lax patch management by the shopping site, since the holes in the program used by the attackers were patched in version 2.3 of the software released in November of last year. Since that time, two versions of the offering have been released, 2.3.1 and 3.0.1.

According to osCommerce, the open source software is used by some 249,000 store owners, developers, service providers and enthusiasts.
Attacks like the one discovered by Armorize can be especially harmful to small and medium-size businesses (SMB), asserts Frank Kenney, a former Gartner analyst and vice president of Global Strategy at Ipswitch, a file transfer security company in Lexington. "Whenever you use off-the-shelf software, you have to understand there are data issues and all types of security vulnerabilities that exist," he told
While the makers of off-the-shelf software patch their programs often, he continued, the business still has to invest in the resources to insure that proper patch work is done. "That requires an outlay of capital that SMBs are not willing to deal with or don't have within their margins," he says.
Such lack of diligence can hurt a business in the long run, because security breaches can invite scrutiny from credit card companies, he explained. A credit card company may refuse to allow the business to use its services until it shows a certain level of security compliance that is out of the reach of the business from a financial or time and resource point of view.
That would have dire consequences for an SMB, he maintains. "The ability to process cards is the difference between a small business or a chain of mom-and-pop stores being open today and being closed tomorrow," he says.

Klaus Knopper, creator of Knoppix officially declared the general availability of its popular Live Linux distribution - Knoppix 7.0.1. This release includes a number of improvements and package upgrades, while removing proprietary packages, such as Adobe Reader. Version 7.0.1 of Knoppix is based on the usual picks from Debian stable (squeeze) and newer Desktop packages from Debian/testing and Debian/unstable (wheezy). It uses kernel 3.3.7 and LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment) as its default desktop environment. The DVD version of Knoppix also includes a choice of GNOME 3.4 or KDE SC 4.7.4 (the current release is KDE SC 4.8.3 from early May), and additional packages such as VirtualBox 4.1.4. Package upgrades include version 3.5.3 of the LibreOffice productivity suite, Wine 1.5.4, Chromium 18 and Iceweasel 10, the re-branded version of the Firefox web browser for Debian. It now has version 1.4 of the open source ADRIANE (Audio Desktop Reference Implementation and Networking Environment) talking menu system for blind users. Other changes include better support for Broadcom Wi-Fi chipsets and experimental support for automatically detecting graphics cards with composite 3D extensions for the Compiz window manager. Hackers Sending Rogue 'Microsoft Services Agreement' Emails Exploiting Java Vulnerability

Cyber criminals are distributing mass on the internet while sending rogue email notifications about changes in Microsoft's Services Agreement to trick people into visiting malicious pages that use a recently circulated Java exploit to infect their computers with malwareOracle left a security flaw in one of the world’s most widely used programs unpatched for four months and then issues a half-baked fix, the company is practically inviting cyber criminals to exploit its users en mass. And as expected the invitation has been accepted.
The rogue email messages are copies of legitimate notifications that Microsoft sent out to users to announce changes to the company's Services Agreement that will take effect Oct. 19. "This email is a legitimate announcement regarding updates to the Microsoft Services Agreement and Communication Preferences," a Microsoft program manager for supporting mail technologies who identifies herself as Karla L, said on the Microsoft Answers website in response to a user inquiring about the authenticity of the email message.
However, she later acknowledged the existence of reports about malicious emails that use the same template. "If you received an email regarding the Microsoft Services Agreement update and you're reading your email through Hotmail or Outlook.com, the legitimate email should have a Green shield that indicates the message is from a Trusted Sender," she said. "If the email does not have a Green shield, you can mark the email as a Phishing scam." 
However, in the malicious versions of the emails, the correct links have been replaced with links to compromised websites that host attack pages from the Blackhole exploit toolkit. Blackhole is a tool used by cybercriminals to launch Web-based attacks that exploit vulnerabilities in browser plug-ins like Java, Adobe Reader or Flash Player, in order to install malware on the computers of users who visit compromised or malicious websites.
This type of attack is known as a drive-by download and is very effective because it requires no user interaction to achieve its goal. The malicious Java applet used in this attack is detected by only eight of the 42 anitivirus engines available on the VirusTotal file scanning service. The Zeus variant has a similarly low detection rate.
"We're receiving multiple reports of a phishing campaign using the template from a legitimate Microsoft email regarding Important Changes to Microsoft Services Agreement and Communication Preferences," Russ McRee, security incident handler at the SANS Internet Storm Center, said Saturday in a blog post.

Recently Found Java Vulnerability Is Being Added Into 'BlackHole' Exploit Kit



Security researcher and journalist Brian Krebs has found evidence that a recently discovered vulnerability in Java is being added to the 'BlackHole' exploit kit. The vulnerability was discovered a few weeks ago and makes use of the Rhino Script Engine to run arbitrary code outside the sandbox. Following a patch released by Oracle, the exploit works against all but the latest versions of Java.
Although there is evidence suggesting that this exploit is currently only used to target computers running Windows, the fact that Java is cross-platform makes these vulnerabilities popular for those who want to attack other operating systems, such as Mac OS X. Java exploits are therefore commonly used in exploit kits such as 'BlackHole'. This kit, which can be bought on the black market, attempts to gain access to the victim's system via exploits in commonly used browser add-ons such as Java, Flash and Adobe Reader. It is usually embedded into legitimate but hacked websites via hidden iframes, making those who avoid the more obscure corners of the Internet just as vulnerable to such attacks. Making sure software is always up to date (or in the case of Java, as Krebs suggests, uninstalled when not needed) is thus an essential step Internet users should take to keep their computers secure.
The sad irony is that 'customers' of 'BlackHole' are having their kits automatically 'patched' to include this latest exploit, Krebs found on underground forums. This is yet another sign of how cybercriminals have become as professional as legitimate software companies.

Hackers Subvert Google Chrome Sandbox


On Monday, French vulnerability research firm Vupen said that it has discovered a way to circumvent the sandbox in the Google Chrome browser. The sandbox is designed to prevent attackers from exploiting arbitrary code via the browser.
According to Vupen, the exploit it created "bypasses all security features including ASLR/DEP/Sandbox (and without exploiting a Windows kernel vulnerability), it is silent (no crash after executing the payload), it relies on undisclosed (0 day) vulnerabilities discovered by Vupen, and it works on all Windows systems (32-bit and x64)." ASLR and DEP refer to two attack mitigation technologies: address space layout randomization (ASLR), for preventing attackers from easily locating local files to exploit, and data execution prevention (DEP) for preventing attackers from executing arbitrary code.
Vupen, however, didn't provide specific details of the attack. Rather, the company said that it's only releasing details of the proof-of-concept exploit to its government customers. "For security reasons, the exploit code and technical details of the underlying vulnerabilities will not be publicly disclosed. They are exclusively shared with our government customers as part of our vulnerability research services," it said.
For everyone else, Vupen uploaded a video demonstration of the attack to its website, which shows Chrome v11.0.696.65 being exploited when a user visits a Web page containing the exploit code. For the purposes of the demonstration, the exploit code downloads the Calculator application from a remote location, then launches it on the user's PC, outside the sandbox.
Asked for comment on the flaw itself, or the potential risk it poses to Chrome users, Google demurred. "We're unable to verify Vupen's claims at this time as we have not received any details from them," said a spokesperson for Google, via email. "Should any modifications become necessary, users will be automatically updated to the latest version of Chrome.
Google has a reputation for rapidly patching Chrome, helped in no small part--given the prevalence of Adobe Flash, Reader, and Acrobat bugs--by its having first dibs on Adobe patches.
Exploiting Chrome has evidently been on the Vupen researchers' minds. In March, they won a prize in thePwn2Own hacking contest by compromising Apple Safari in five seconds, which earned them $15,000. But they could have sweetened the pot by $5,000 if they had hacked Google Chrome, which hadn't been cracked during three years' worth of Pwn2Own contests.
At least part of that fact could be due to Google running its own bug bounty program, which now pays anywhere from $500 to $3,133.70 for information on particularly egregious vulnerabilities in or clever exploits of its products. Vupen not submitting the details of the bug it discovered leaves open the possibility that someone else might submit the information in return for the reward.
But Vupen's move also illustrates the market dynamics at work behind vulnerability research. Namely, a company such as Vupen builds its business by attracting subscribers to its software vulnerability information service, meaning that its revenue relates directly to the quality, timeliness, and--sometimes--exclusivity of its bug notices.

Microsoft's John Howie claims Microsoft security is stronger than Sony and RSA which were hacked due to "rookie mistakes." The software giant also released Volume 10 of its Security Intelligence Report.

Uh-oh. There's nothing quite like throwing down the gauntlet and virtually taunting hackers to prove a proud boast is false. In what some attackers might consider a dare,  John Howie, Microsoft's senior director in the Online Services Security & Compliance (OSSC) team, basically claimed that Microsoft sites are unhackable and can't be DDoSed.
According to Microsoft, "rookie mistakes" by Sony and security firm RSA caused the corporations to be brought down by hackers. Howie told Computing News that Sony was coded badly and failed to patch its servers. "These are rookie mistakes," Howie said.  In regards to the breach at RSA, Howie stated, "RSA got hacked because someone got socially engineered and opened a dodgy email attachment. A rookie mistake."
Howie added, "At Microsoft we have robust mechanisms to ensure we don't have unpatched servers. We have training for staff so they know how to be secure and be wise to social engineering. We have massively overbuilt our internet capacity, this protects us against DoS attacks. We won't notice until the data column gets to 2GB/s, and even then we won't sweat until it reaches 5GB/s. Even then we have edge protection to shun addresses that we suspect of being malicious."
In other Microsoft security news, after analyzing 600 million computers worldwide, Microsoft released Volume 10 of its Security Intelligence Report. It  focuses on malware, software vulnerability disclosures, vulnerability exploits, and related trends. The majority of all vulnerabilities in 2010 were vulnerabilities in applications versus operating systems or web browsers. Exploiting Java vulnerabilities topped the list of exploitation categories over generic HTML/scripting exploits, operating system exploits, and document exploits. Adobe Acrobat and Reader accounted for the highest number of document format exploits. Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 had the lowest operating system infection rate for both client and server platforms. 64-bit versions of Windows 7 which "appeal to a more technically savvy audience than their 32-bit counterparts" have the lowest infection rates.
In regard to malicious websites, phishers targeted gaming sites in the first half of 2010 but then targeted social networks. Yet the "number of active sites targeting gaming sites remained relatively high during the second half of the year, which suggests that more campaigns may be coming."
According to the SIR [PDF] Global Threat Assessment graph below, in the 4th quarter of 2010, the most common threat in the USA  was miscellaneous Trojans which affected 38.6% of all cleaned computers. This was down from 43.8% in the 3rd quarter. The second most common threat was Adware which affected 28.3% of all cleaned computers and was up from 23% in the third quarter. "Miscellaneous Potentially Unwanted Software" was the third most common threat in the U.S. and affected 24.6% of cleaned computers. The MSRT detected malware on 11.6 of every 1,000 computers scanned in U.S. in 4Q10 giving the States "a CCM score of 11.6, compared to the 4Q10 average worldwide CCM of 8.7."
