JavaFX 2.0 released in beta Version


Java FX 2.0 has been released in beta - this is good news for some developers but not for those in the Linux environment.
Java FX 2.0 was announced over six months ago - at JavaOne in September 2010 which is why Oracle is describing this beta release as "much-anticipated".
However, the fact that there is no download for Linux has led to more discontent than enthusiasm among the comments greeting the news announcement on the Java blog.   
The new features of JavaFX 2.0 are:
  • Java APIs provide all the familiar language features (such as generics, annotations, and multithreading). The APIs are designed to work with other JVM languages, such as JRuby and Scala.
  • A new graphics engine makes use of the GPU to speed things up. The basis of this new engine is a hardware accelerated graphics pipeline, called Prism, that is coupled with a new windowing toolkit, called Glass.
  • A new media engine that supports playback of the web multimedia content based on the GStreamer multimedia framework.
  • A web component that gives the capability of embedding HTML content within a JavaFX application using the WebKit HTML rendering technology. Hardware accelerated rendering is made available using Prism.
  • A refreshed browser plug-In for JavaFX 2.0 that allows the loading of JavaFX applets based on Prism.
  • A wide variety of built-in UI controls, which include Charts, Tables, Menus, and Panes. Additionally, an API is provided to allow third parties to contribute UI controls that the user community can use.
  • Sample applications that showcase the different features of the JavaFX 2.0 technology, along with a large number of code samples and snippets.
Of course older JavaFX application will no longer work because JavaFX Script is not supported. In fact the new version is much more like a "reboot" of the entire technology than an upgrade.
As well as the SDK you can also download a JavaFX 2.0 plugin for NetBeans.
Oracle said that it plans to move the JavaFX 2.0 release into general availability some time in the third quarter of 2011. It also plans to release versions for Linux and the Mac later in the year.
The real question is whether or not JavaFX 2.0 can revitalise Java on the desktop? Is it really just a matter of adding some 3D effects and general purpose graphics?

Attackers target applications


Software applications rather than operating systems or web browsers were the favoured target of cyber attackers last year, although the total number of application vulnerabilities was significantly down compared to 2009, a new report from Microsoft has shown.
Microsoft’s latest Security Intelligence Report found that overall, the industry’s disclosure of vulnerabilities – holes in software that bad guys can exploit – has been declining since 2006. Microsoft attributed this to better development practices and quality control on the part of developers, which it said results in more secure software.
Attacks exploiting weaknesses in Java rose sharply during the third quarter of 2010, beating every other kind of exploitation tracked by Microsoft’s Malware Protection Centre. Exploits using HTML and JavaScript increased steadily throughout the year and continue to represent a large portion of exploits, the report said.
In the third quarter, the number of Java attacks increased to fourteen times the number recorded in the previous quarter, following the discovery of two vulnerabilities in the Java Virtual Machine. These flaws alone accounted for 85pc of the Java exploits detected in the second half of 2010. By the end of the year Java exploits far outnumbered all other types of software vulnerabilities such as HTML/Script, operating systems, document readers and even Adobe Flash.

Drop-offs in flow of spam

The flow of spam also saw two massive drop-offs during last year, in September and December, which Microsoft said was due to the elimination of two sources – the Cutwail Spambot and Rustock. While Cutwail was taken out as part of an operation by security researchers, Rustock re-emerged in January and has begun sending spam again.

Another Mac Trojan "Backdoor.OSX.SabPub" Discovered, Exploiting Java Vulnerability 
Few weeks ago security experts found Flashback Trojan infected more than 60,000 Mac users around the world. Immediately after this incident Apple issued patches that curb the vulnerability. Yet again it has been found that another Mac trojan that is also spread through Java exploits. The malware, called Backdoor.OSX.SabPub, can take screen-shots of a user’s current session, execute commands on an infected machine and connect to a remote website to transmit the data. It is not clear how users get infected with the trojan, but because of the low number of instances and the trojan’s backdoor functionality, Securelist speculates that it is most likely used in targeted attacks, possibly launched through emails containing a URL pointing to two one of websites hosting the exploit. Two versions of SabPub were discovered in the wild this past weekend, flying undedected for about two months now. Kaspersky's Costin Raiu wrote in a blog post that SabPub was probably written by the LuckyCat authors.
Version 1: Microsoft Office
One version of SabPub traps Mac (and potentially Windows) users with booby-trapped Microsoft Word documents which exploit the vulnerability 'MSWord.CVE-2009-00563.a.'
The spear-phishing emails containment a malicious Word attachment entitled '10thMarch Statemnet' (with typo) to Tibet sympathizers. March 10, 2011 refers to the day the Dalai Lama delivered his annual speech observing the Tibetan Uprising of 1959. The Word doc was created in August 2010 and updated in February with SabPub thrown in; "quite normal" for such attacks and seen in other APT's like Duqu, Raiu notes.
Version 2: Java
A March version of Sabpub also discovered last weekend exploits the same drive-by Java vulnerability seen in Flashback, one of the biggest botnet attacks seen in OS X. Once the backdoor Trojan is downloaded, a victim's system is connected to a command-and-control center via HTTP. From there the botnet can grab screenshots, upload/download files, and remotely execute commands, Sophos' Graham Cluley writes. SabPub drops the following two files on a user's system, so if you are concerned about infection Cluley recommends searching for these files:
/Users//Library/Preferences/com.apple.PubSabAgent.pfile
/Users//Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.PubSabAGent.plist

Earlier also Mac users faced such attacks where OSX/Revir-B trojan was installed behind a PDF, and giving hackers remote access to MAC computers, not only Revier-B also Linux Tsunami trojan Called "Kaiten" targeted Mac OS users in 2011. Also another malware named "Devil Robber" which was also make MAC users victim while stealing their personal informations.

Hackers Sending Rogue 'Microsoft Services Agreement' Emails Exploiting Java Vulnerability

Cyber criminals are distributing mass on the internet while sending rogue email notifications about changes in Microsoft's Services Agreement to trick people into visiting malicious pages that use a recently circulated Java exploit to infect their computers with malwareOracle left a security flaw in one of the world’s most widely used programs unpatched for four months and then issues a half-baked fix, the company is practically inviting cyber criminals to exploit its users en mass. And as expected the invitation has been accepted.
The rogue email messages are copies of legitimate notifications that Microsoft sent out to users to announce changes to the company's Services Agreement that will take effect Oct. 19. "This email is a legitimate announcement regarding updates to the Microsoft Services Agreement and Communication Preferences," a Microsoft program manager for supporting mail technologies who identifies herself as Karla L, said on the Microsoft Answers website in response to a user inquiring about the authenticity of the email message.
However, she later acknowledged the existence of reports about malicious emails that use the same template. "If you received an email regarding the Microsoft Services Agreement update and you're reading your email through Hotmail or Outlook.com, the legitimate email should have a Green shield that indicates the message is from a Trusted Sender," she said. "If the email does not have a Green shield, you can mark the email as a Phishing scam." 
However, in the malicious versions of the emails, the correct links have been replaced with links to compromised websites that host attack pages from the Blackhole exploit toolkit. Blackhole is a tool used by cybercriminals to launch Web-based attacks that exploit vulnerabilities in browser plug-ins like Java, Adobe Reader or Flash Player, in order to install malware on the computers of users who visit compromised or malicious websites.
This type of attack is known as a drive-by download and is very effective because it requires no user interaction to achieve its goal. The malicious Java applet used in this attack is detected by only eight of the 42 anitivirus engines available on the VirusTotal file scanning service. The Zeus variant has a similarly low detection rate.
"We're receiving multiple reports of a phishing campaign using the template from a legitimate Microsoft email regarding Important Changes to Microsoft Services Agreement and Communication Preferences," Russ McRee, security incident handler at the SANS Internet Storm Center, said Saturday in a blog post.

Oracle to Mitigate 73 Security Vulnerabilities in Upcoming Critical Patch Update


Oracle is all set for the upcoming critical patch update. The pre-release announcement by the company indicates that in all 73 vulnerabilities associated with numerous products will be mitigated during the next critical patch update. The update will mitigate security vulnerabilities associated with Oracle database server, fusion middleware, enterprise manager, e-business suite, supply chain products, PeopleSoft, JD Edwards suite, Siebel CRM, industry applications, Sun products and Open office suite.

The company releases quarterly critical patch updates on Tuesday closest to 17th day of January, April, July and October. The company uses Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) version 2.0 to rate vulnerabilities. The vulnerabilities are assigned scores based on the prerequisites for exploiting the vulnerability, ease of exploit, and impact of the attack on availability, confidentiality and integrity. Base scores range from 0.0 to 10.0 with ten being the most severe vulnerability.

Vulnerabilities may be caused by technological flaws, programming errors, and other human errors. Developers are required constantly upgrade their technical skills through online IT degree courses, training programs and refresher courses to deal with ever evolving threats.

The critical patch update will address six vulnerabilities in database server. The vulnerabilities affect components such as application service level management, database vault, Oracle help, security service, warehouse builder, UIX and network foundation. Two of the six vulnerabilities do not require authentication for exploitation of vulnerabilities. Highest base score for security flaws affecting database server is 6.5. The update will mitigate 9 flaws associated with fusion middleware, 6 of which are exploitable without authentication.

The vulnerabilities affect Oracle help, HTTP server, JRockit, outside In technology, security service, WebLogic server, portal and single sign on. Oracle has assigned highest severity score of 10 for vulnerabilities affecting fusion middleware. 4 vulnerabilities will be fixed in Oracle applications, 2 of which are exploitable without authentication. The vulnerabilities have been assigned a base score of 4.3 and affect application object library, applications install, and web ADI. The update will resolve a flaw in Supply chain products suite, which is exploitable without authentication. Highest base score for vulnerability in supply chain products suite is 4.3 and affects Agile technology program.

14 security flaws have related to PeopleSoft Suite will be fixed in the upcoming critical patch, 1 of which is exploitable without authentication. Highest base score for security flaws associated with PeopleSoft suite is 4.3 and affects PeopleSoft Enterprise, Enterprise CRM, ELS, HRMS and People tools. The critical patch update will resolve 8 issues associated with JD Edwards suite, 7 of which are exploitable without authentication. Highest base score for vulnerabilities in JD Edwards suite is 6.4 and affects EnterpriseOne tools.

The update will address a vulnerability associated with industry applications, which affects InForm. Highest base score for vulnerability in industry applications is 5.5. 8 security flaws will be mitigated in Sun products suite, seven of which are exploitable without authentication. Oracle has assigned highest severity score of 10 for security flaws affecting Sun products suite. The components affected include Java Dynamic Management Kit, Java system web server, Solaris, OpenSSO Enterprise, GlassFish Enterprise server, java system application server, java system access manager policy agent, and java system messaging server.

The upcoming critical patch update will fix 8 security issues related to Open Office suite, of which 7 are exploitable without authentication. Highest base score for security flaws in Open Office suite is 9.3. Open Office, StarOffice and StarSuite are affected by the vulnerabilities.

Vulnerabilities are identified by professionals qualified in IT degree programs and security certifications such as penetration testing. Developers encourage both in-house and independent security researchers to detect and report security flaws so that they can be mitigated before exploitation by attackers.

Online IT courses, e-tutorials, security blogs and alerts from computer emergency response teams could help users in gaining insights on security threats, their implications and importance of security updates. Users must keep track of the security releases and install necessary updates to safeguard their systems and data from unauthorized access.

So you can deploy RATTE as readme.pdf.exe and it will run as iexplore.exe to bypass local firewalls. You can although specify if RATTE should be persistent or not. For testing network firewalls you won’t need a persistent one. Doing a penetration test you may choose a persistent configuration.
* Fixed a bug in RATTE which could break connection to Server. RATTE now runs much more stable and can bypass high end network firewalls much more reliable.
* Added a new config option called POWERSHELL_INJECTION, this uses the technique discovered by Matthew Graeber which injects shellcode directly into memory through powershell
* Added a new teensy powershell attack leveraging Matthew Graebers attack vector.
* Rehauled the Java Applet attack to incorporate the powershell injectiont technique, its still experimental, so will remain OFF in the config by default. The applet will not detect if Powershell is installed, and if so, use the shellcode deployment method to gain memory execution without touching disk through PowerShell.
* Fixed a bug that would cause mssql bruter to error if powershell injection was enabled or other attack vectors

Flashback Trojan Infected Over 600,000 Mac-OS Users, Apple Pushes Out Fix Again 

Russian anti-virus vendor Dr. Web spotted a Trojan affecting nearly 600,000 Macs around the world. The near immune image of the Mac OS X has simply crumbled. So much for Macs being relatively safe against malware attacks. That idea took a punch to the stomach this week when the news broke about the Flashback trojan affecting more than half a million Macs worldwide. Flashback is essentially the malware equivalent of a smash-and-grab thief. Exploiting a Java vulnerability, the code installs and runs when the user visits a compromised or malicious website, intercepting private data, like passwords, and sending it back out over the internet. According to Doctor Web, sources claim that “links to more than four million compromised web-pages could be found on a Google SERP [search results] at the end of March. In addition, some posts on Apple user forums described cases of infection by [the latest variant] BackDoor.Flashback.39 when visiting dlink.com.” The trojan, Backdoor.Flashback.39, can infect computers via an infected web page. The vulnerability itself lies in Java, a product which is not Apple’s
About 57% of infected machines were in the US, 20% in Canada, 13% in UK and 6% in Australia. Apple has already issued patches that curb the vulnerability, but it does not necessarily mean that all users have applied the security patch on their Macs. Even Mozilla has block listed all the older and vulnerable Java plug-in from Firefox. Users are recommended to install the recent Apple Java update to close the hole which allows malicious web pages to drop the trojan onto a system and to always check which application is actually asking for your password when requested.

Update: To detect if a system is infected with Flashback, run each of the following commands in the Mac OS X Terminal:-
defaults read ~/.MacOSX/environment DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES
defaults read /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Info LSEnvironment
defaults read /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/Info LSEnvironment


If all these commands respond with "The domain/default pair of ... does not exist", then there is no Flashback infection. Otherwise consult the F-Secure advisory for manual removal instructions.

If you’re running Mac OS X v10.6.8, Mac OS X Server v10.6.8, OS X Lion v10.7.3 and Lion Server v10.7.3, be sure to hit up Software Update in your System Preferences.

Several import parsers were rewritten to use Nokogiri for much faster processing of large import files. Adding to Metasploit’s extensive payload support, Windows and Java Meterpreter now both support staging over HTTP and Windows can use HTTPS. In a similar vein, POSIX Meterpreter is seeing some new development again. It still isn’t perfect nor is it nearly as complete as the Windows version, but many features already work. Java applet signing is now done directly in Ruby, removing the need for a JDK for generating self-signed certificates. The Linux installers now ship with ruby headers, making it possible to install native gems in the Metasploit ruby environment.

Another flexibility improvement comes in the form of a consolidated pcap interface. The pcaprub extension ships with the Linux installers as of this release and support for Windows will come soon. Modules that used Racket for generating raw packets have been converted to Packetfu, which provides a smoother API for modules to capture and inject packets.

HP ZDI is offering more than half a million dollars (USD) in cash and prizes during the competition for vulnerabilities and exploitation techniques in the below categories. The first contestant to successfully compromise a selected target will win the prizes for the category.

The targets will be running on the latest, fully patched version of the Windows 7, 8, and OS X Mountain Lion. All targets will be installed in their default configurations, as this is how a majority of users will have them configured. As always, the vulnerabilities utilized in the attack must be unknown and not previously reported to the vendor. If a sandbox is present, a full sandbox escape is required to win. A given vulnerability may only be used once across all categories.
Upon successful demonstration of the exploit, the contestant will provide HP ZDI a fully functioning exploit and all the details of the vulnerability used in the attack. In the case that multiple vulnerabilities were exploited to gain code execution, details about all the vulnerabilities (memory corruption, infoleaks, escalations, etc.) leveraged and the sequence in which they are used must be provided to receive the prize money. The initial vulnerability utilized in the attack must be in the registered category.
Along with prize money, the contestant will receive the compromised laptop and 20,000 ZDI reward points* which immediately qualifies them for Silver standing.

SWFRETools: A Tool to Reverse Engineer SWF Files


The SWFRE Tools are a collection of tools built for vulnerability analysis of the Adobe Flash player and for malware analysis of malicious SWF files. The tools are partly written in Java and partly in Python and are licensed under the GPL 2.0 license.
The basic architecture of SQFRETools is as follows:
  • Flash Dissector: Flash Dissector is a GUI tool that allows you to inspect SWF files on a binary level. When you open a SWF file in Flash Dissector you have the ability to look through the structures defined in the SWF file in a hex editor and in a structure viewer. This makes it easy to understand what bytes of a SWF file hold what functionality.
  • SWF Parser: SWF Parser is an open-source SWF file parser implemented in Java that you can build upon when you want to create your own Flash reverse engineering tools.
  • Minimizer: The Minimizer program takes a SWF input that makes Flash Player crash and automatically removes the parts of the SWF file that are not related to the crash. This makes it easier to determine what the root cause of a crash is.
  • FP Debugger: This Flash Player hooking script hooks important functionality in Flash Player at runtime and dumps information about what Flash Player is parsing and executing. This is very useful in situations where Flash Player trips up and static analysis are out of sync with what Flash Player is doing.
  • StatsGenerator: Generate stats over SWF files.

Couple of weeks ago we got the Beta version of Fedora 17 and now the developers at Fedora Project announced the general availability of of its popular Linux distribution Fedora 17 code named "Beefy Miracle". According to the release note - "At the heat of a thousand hot dog cookers, the seventeenth release of Fedora shall be forged by contributors the world over, and it will be known as: Beefy Miracle. The mustard shall indicate progress. For six months, participants in the Fedora Project shall freely contribute to the release of the distribution, in the spirit of the Four Foundations -- Freedom, Friends, Features, and First -- and moreover, they shall relish in Fun, as a community without Fun would be like a day without sunshine..."
This new release includes a version of the GNOME Shell which works on systems with graphics drivers that don't support 3D acceleration. The latest version of the Linux distribution also implements much-discussed changes to the filesystem structure involving the removal of the /bin/, /sbin/, /lib/ and /lib64/ directories. A new sandbox feature allows applications to be easily isolated using KVM or LXC.
Fedora 17 includes a pre-release of Juno, the release of the  Eclipse SDK expected in June 2012.  Java 7 (and OpenJDK 7) is the default Java runtime and Java build toolset, and GCC 4.7.x is now the primary compiler in Fedora.  Other language refreshes include shipping Ruby 1.9.3, the latest stable version of the Ruby language; PHP 5.4, the latest PHP stack; an update of Erlang to the R15 release; and the D language has been updated to the 2.058 release.
Fedora 17 will increase your reliability and versatility with the new enhancements to the clustering stack in Fedora  17. Load balancing and high availability improvements have been made, allowing systems administrators to deploy Fedora in environments requiring greater availability and clustered file systems. JBoss Application Server (AS) 7 has also been added to Fedora 17; this fast, lightweight, and modular application server allows you to run full Java EE applications. oVirt, a server virtualization management system with advanced capabilities for hosts and guests, is also included.  The automatic multi-seat feature enables multiple, concurrent end-users to utilize a desktop from a single machine, which any systems administrator can relish. Mass ASP.NET Infection Ongoing, So Far 614,000 Web-Pages Affected


An infection that causes poorly configured websites to silently bombard visitors with malware attacks has hit almost 614,000 webpages, Google searches show.
The mass infection, which redirects users to a site exploiting old versions of Oracle's Java, Adobe's Flash player and various browsers, was first disclosed by Armorize on Wednesday. At the time, it appeared to affect about 180,000 pages. 


By time of writing on Friday, the initial attack and a follow-on exploit has spread to 613,890 combined pages. The SQL injection attack mostly exploits websites running Microsoft's ASP.Net web application framework.
The infection injects code into websites operated by restaurants, hospitals, and other small businesses and plants an invisible link in visitors' browsers to sites including jjghui.com and nbnjkl.com. Those sites in turn redirected to several other websites that include highly obfuscated code. At the end of the line is a cocktail of attacks that exploit known vulnerabilities in Java and the other targeted programs. Computers running unpatched versions are then commandeered. Servers in the attack used IP addresses based in the US and Russia.

The scripts causes the visiting browser to load an iframe first from www3.strongdefenseiz.in and then from www2.safetosecurity.rr.nu. Multiple browser-based drive-by download exploits are served depending on the visiting browser. In a drive-by download attack, visitors who navigate to the infected websites will be installed with malware on their machines without their knowledge. This is if they have outdated browsing platforms (browser or Adobe PDF or Adobe Flash or Java etc).
This wave of mass injection incident is targeting ASP ASP.NET websites. Currently, the 6 out of 43 antivirus vendors on VirusTotal can detect the dropped malware.

Fedora 16 (Verne) is Coming With Lots of Big Changes


Fedora 16 is code-named Verne, for Jules Verne is coming with big changes. The beta version was released on the october. Fedora is both a great testbed for new technologies, and a good distro with a strong commitment to free (as in freedom) software. Fedora was the first, or among the first to roll out SELinux, a free Java environment (GNU Java, OpenJDK, and ecj) back before Sun's Java was converted to the GPL, PulseAudio, and Nouveau.  

Fedora's QA Community Monkey, explains:-
"Fedora isn't only a test bed, it is a perfectly usable distro as a daily driver. It is going to be slightly less dependable and polished than Ubuntu for such use, in general. Everyone has a slightly different take on Fedora but I like to see it as being kind of a prototype, or maybe a first-year model; it's not exactly that we're not trying to build an awesome usable desktop / server distro, but we tend to introduce a lot of very Shiny New Stuff and do it on a very aggressive schedule. And of course we don't provide any non-free drivers or worry overmuch about making sure they work, which can be a consideration. I run the next-stable-version on my desktop most of the time and it's totally workable, and I run my servers on current-stable-Fedora. But there may be the odd occasion where something breaks, and version upgrades can be a bit bumpy."
F16 introduces a number of significant changes: GRUB 2 replaces legacy GRUB, HAL is gone and replaced by udisks, upower, and libudev, migration from SysV init to native Systemd continues (scheduled for completion in F17), and a number of cloud utilities and OpenStack are included. btrfs, the much-hyped filesystem that is supposed to become the Linux default, was supposed to be the default for Verne, but it's still not ready. The main snag is the lack of a dependable, fully-functional fsck, so look for it in F17. You can still use it if you like because it is an option in the installer when you set up partitions. And, as Adam Williamson revealed, "btrfs has been available as a Sekrit Option in the installer for several releases, you make it available by passing a kernel parameter to the installer. For a while this was, awesomely, 'icantbelieveitsnotbtr', but now it's just plain 'btrfs'."

Remember earlier MAC Security Blog reported that the latest version, Flashback.D, has gotten a bit sneakier. First, it checks to see if the user is running Mac OS X in VMware Fusion. If so, it does not execute. It does this because many malware researchers test malware in virtual machines, rather than infect full installations, as it is easier to delete them and start over with clean copies. This means that security researchers analyzing and looking for this malware need to be running regular Macs.
 Yet again Mac users became the victim of another trojan. This new Trojan virus is capable of infecting their computers and stealing passwords to services such as Google, PayPal, online banking & so on. This virus is using a new installation method When a user visits a crafted web page, the new variant either tries to exploit two old security vulnerabilities or deploys a Java Applet which tries to trick the user into believing it has been certified by Apple. According to Mac Security Blog (Intego):- This new variant of the Flashback Trojan horse uses three methods to infect Macs. The malware first tries to install itself using one of two Java vulnerabilities. If this is successful, users will be infected with no intervention. If these vulnerabilities are not available – if the Macs have Java up to date – then it attempts a third method of installation, trying to fool users through a social engineering trick. The applet displays a self-signed certificate, claiming to be issued by Apple. Most users won’t understand what this means, and click on Continue to allow the installation to continue.
It is worth noting that Flashback.G will not install if VirusBarrier X6 is present, or if a number of other security programs are installed on the Mac in question. It does this to avoid detection. It seems that the malware writers feel it is best to avoid Macs where the malware might be detected, and focus on the many that aren’t protected.
Earlier also Mac users faced such attacks where OSX/Revir-B trojan was installed behind a PDF, and giving hackers remote access to MAC computers, not only Revier-B also Linux Tsunami trojan Called "Kaiten" targeted Mac OS users in 2011. Also another malware named "Devil Robber" which was also make MAC users victim while stealing their personal informations.

Oracle fixes Java.com website hole after heads-up from hacker group

The secretive hacker group known as YGN Ethical Hacker Group has done it again, exposing a vulnerability in a vendor website -- this time one owned by Oracle -- through assessment scanning. YGN says Oracle responded promptly to its notification about the vulnerability it found in www.java.com and fixed the hole.
YGN told Network World by email that the Oracle Security Alerts team has thanked it for the information provided about an "arbitrary URL redirect vulnerability" in www.java.com. YGN published advisory information about this vulnerability both on the public SecLists online and the hacker group's own website on Sunday.
Oracle had no immediate comment.
This interaction between YGN and Oracle, which took place over the last week, seems to have followed a far different course than the hacker group's recent interaction with McAfee, which ended last month with YGN disclosing it had found a vulnerability in the McAfee website before the security vendor had fixed it.

This will generate more chance that bob accepts requests from mallory as he thinks he is accepting from andy. Eventually bob will realize this is not andy's account, but probably it would be too late as all his info are already saved for offline checking by mallory.

CheckFriendRequest: Check if mallory is already friend of bob, then just end execution. If not, the module tries to add bob as as a friend and poll waiting for him to accept. The module will not stop executing until the friend request is accepted.

DumpFriends: Accessable friends of bob is saved for offline viewing. The output of the module depends on other modues, if mallory is not a friend of bob yet, the data might not be accessable and nothing will be dumped.

DumpImages: Accessable images (tagged and albums) are saved for offline viewing including comments under each image and album names. Same limitations of dump friends applies.

DumpInfo: Accessable basic info are saved for offline viewing. Same limitations of dump friends applies.

DumpWall: Dumps wall posts for offline viewing. Same limitations of dump friends applies.

DictionaryBuilder: Builds a dictionary using words from comments under photos and wall posts.

CloseFriendsFinder: Finds the victim's close circle of friends by counting number of comments,likes and tags under photos and wall posts with the ability to change the weights of the ranking criteria.

Up-gradation of Firefox 5.0.1 for MAC OS X Has Been Fixed


Mozilla has released version 5.0.1 of Firefox. As previously reported, the maintenance update to Firefox 5 addresses problems with Apple's upcoming Mac OS X Lion operating system that could cause the browser to crash. Firefox 5.0.1 also resolves an issue caused by one of Apple's latest Java updates (Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 10) that prevented the Java plug-in from being loaded. Although the release notes mention only changes affecting the Mac OS X version of Firefox, updates to the Windows and Linux versions have also been released.
Further information about the update can be found in the release notes. Firefox 5.0.1 is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux from the project's web site. Alternatively, users can upgrade to the new versions either by waiting for the automated update notification or by manually selecting "Check for updates" from the Help Menu.
Update: To avoid a crashing problem on the upcoming version of Mac OS X, Mozilla has released an update to the 3.6.x branch of Firefox, version 3.6.19, that disables downloadable fonts when running on Mac OS X Lion. The developers say that they hope to enable them again in a future release. In a post on the Mozilla Developer Center blog, the developers also note that Windows and Linux users "do not need and will not see the update offer" for Firefox 3.6.19 or 5.0.1.

NBC.com Compromised, Hackers Exploited The Website to Spread Malware

The month of February is still going from bad to worse for the cyber domain, in this very month cyber criminals swallowed the security system of many giant companies like Facebook, Twitter, Apple, New York Times and many more. But the game is not over yet, as we have just passed a few weeks, when the attack on NY Times took place, which stolen the employ database; yet again the cyber criminals have targeted another media giant National Broadcasting Company widely known as NBC. During the attack, hackers have successfully gain access inside the server of NBC and planted malware, in order to harm innocent readers. Famous security expert and blogger Brian Krebs said that the hackers inserted code into the NBC.com homepage. This caused visiting browsers to load pages from third-party sites that were compromised. While explaining the nature of the attacker, Krebs said; "The compromised sites tried to foist the Citadel Trojan, a variant of the Zeus Trojan." The Zeus is a "sophisticated data theft tool that steals passwords and allows attackers to control machines remotely" he added. Not only the NBC’s home page, also several others were affected, including the pages of late night talk show hosts Jay Leno and Jimmy Fallon. Well known security firm Sophos explained how roughly attack played out, and how NBC got sucked into the equation:
  • NBC's hacked pages were altered to add some malicious JavaScript that ran in your browser.
  • The JavaScript injected an additional HTML component known as an IFRAME (inline frame) into the web page.
  • The IFRAME sucked in further malicious content from websites infected with an exploit kit known as RedKit.
  • The exploit kit delivered one of two exploit files to try to take control over your browser via a Java vulnerability or a PDF bug.
  • If the exploit worked on your computer, financially-related crimeware from the Citadel or ZeroAccess families was installed.
This, of course, is an example of a dreaded drive-by download, where the crooks use a cascade of tricks to download, install and execute software without going through any of the warnings or confirmation dialog you might expect. This, in turn, means that even if you are a careful and well-informed user, you may end up in trouble, since there are no obvious signs that you are doing anything risky, or even unexpected.
As soon as this story get spotted the American commercial broadcasting television network, NBC News reported and confirmed that its site had been attacked. The broadcaster released the following statement regarding the website: "We've identified the problem and are working to resolve it. No user information has been compromised."
The emergency response team immediately take the situation under control and restored the website, and confirmed that the site is back again and completely safe for its visitors. But so far there is no evidence of attackers who were involved in this attack. For the safety of VOGH readers we would like to recommend you to update your operating systems and browser plugins. Also note that the attack on NBC was similar to many that have occurred in recent years in that the malicious sites tried to exploit vulnerabilities in Java. The social networking giant and the world famous micro blogging site Twitter again fallen victim of cyber attack. Last year we have seen that the tight security system if twitter have been compromised many times. Yet again in this year the San Francisco based social media giant who have more than 500 million registered users failed to protect them selves from hackers. On last Friday Twitter acknowledged that it had become the latest victim in a number of cyber-attacks against media companies, saying hackers may have gained access to information on 250,000 of its more than 200 million active users. The micro blogging giant said in a blog posting that earlier this week it detected attempts to gain access to its user data. It shut down one attack moments after it was detected. According to reports usernames, email addresses, session tokens and encrypted/salted passwords for 250,000 users might have been accessed in what it described as a “sophisticated attack” 

"This attack was not the work of amateurs, and we do not believe it was an isolated incident,” said Bob Lord, Twitter’s director of information security. “The attackers were extremely sophisticated, and we believe other companies and organisations have also been recently similarly attacked” Bob added. 

Jim Prosser, a Twitter spokesman, would not say how hackers infiltrated Twitter’s systems, but Twitter’s blog post said hackers had broken in through a well-publicized vulnerability in Oracle’s Java software. Last month, after a security researcher exposed a serious vulnerability in the software, though Oracle patched the security hole, but Homeland Security said the fix was not sufficient. The DHS issued a rare alert that warned users to disable Java on their computers. Prosser said Twitter was working with government and federal law enforcement to track down the source of the attacks. For now, he said the company had reset passwords for, and notified, every compromised user. The company encouraged users to practice good password hygiene, which typically means coming up with different passwords for different sites, and using long passwords that cannot be found in the dictionary.
Twitter said it “hashed” passwords — which involves mashing up users’ passwords with a mathematical algorithm — and “salted” those, meaning it appended random digits to the end of each hashed password to make it more difficult, but not impossible, for hackers to crack. Once cracked, passwords can be valuable on auction-like black market sites where a single password can fetch $20.

While talking about Twitter and cyber issues, I would like to remind you that in last year twitter faced several cyber attacks where more than 55,000 twitter account details was leaked, after this issue in the middle of last year the social networking giant faced massive denial of service which interrupted its services. Later a huge number of Twitter users across the globe received  emails warning that their account have been compromised and their passwords had been reset, and it was another security breach which affected twitter. Such big organization are not at all careless about security, so as twitter and it has been proved when they hired renowned white hat hacker Charlie Miller to boost up their security, but after this current massacre, it seems that twitter need to think more and emphasize a lot to make sure that their system is good enough to prevent cyber attacks.
