Oracle Issued Critical Patch Update To Close 88 Security Hole 

As part of its Critical Patch Update (CPU) Oracle released 88 security fixes addressing vulnerabilities in over 35 products in its portfolio. Last CPU of Oracle closed 78 security holes but this time the list added ten more so 78 became 88. Unlike Microsoft, which releases patches every month, Oracle follows a quarterly patch schedule across its entire product portfolio, excluding Oracle Enterprise Linux and Java. This April's Critical Patch Update contains six fixes for the Oracle Database Server, 11 for Oracle Fusion Middleware, 15 in Oracle Sun products, and six in MySQL, the company said in its CPU advisory released Apr. 17. Other affected suites include Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control, Oracle e-Business Suite, Oracle Supply Chain, Oracle PeopleSoft, Oracle Industry Applications, Oracle Financial Services, and Oracle Primavera Products.  There are 15 new security fixes for the Oracle Sun Products Suite, five of which could be remotely exploited without the need for a username or password. Of the 88 fixes, 33 were considered critical, meaning they could be remotely exploited without needing a username and password. In contrast, January's CPU had only 16 remote code execution vulnerabilities. "Due to the threat posed by a successful attack, Oracle strongly recommends that customers apply CPU fixes as soon as possible," the company said in the advisory.

Oracle Released a Mammoth 78 Patches


Oracle is to release a mammoth 78 patches on Tuesday as part of the company's quarterly security update, including 23 fixes for Sun products and 13 for Database Server.
Oracle said in a Critical Patch Release pre-release announcement on Thursday that the patches have been designed to fix flaws across hundreds of its products.
"Some of the vulnerabilities addressed in this Critical Patch Update affect multiple products," the firm said.
"Due to the threat posed by a successful attack, Oracle strongly recommends that customers apply Critical Patch Update fixes as soon as possible."
Two of the 13 vulnerabilities in Oracle Database Server could be exploited remotely and without authentication, as could three in Oracle Secure Backup, according to the firm.
Oracle is also planning 18 new security fixes for Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control, 12 for PeopleSoft products, seven for Oracle Fusion Middleware and one each for E-Business Suite and Supply Chain Products Suite.
However, the largest number of patches is reserved for the Oracle Sun Products Suite. Nine of these vulnerabilities could be remotely exploited "over a network without the need for a username and password", the firm warned.
This quarter's patch update will keep administrators busy, but only just trumps Oracle's April update, which addressed 73 vulnerabilities in 25 products, including the Oracle Database 11g, Fusion Middleware, Application Server and People Enterprise platforms.

A serious vulnerability found by security researchers on oracle databases. An attacker can perform SQL injection attacks and other advanced attacks, thus they can gain full privilege & traction said security researchers. Is Oracle just paying lip service to database security? Some researchers within the database community think so, complaining that as the software juggernaut has grown with acquisitions, such as the blockbuster Sun deal, it hasn't maintained enough resources to securely develop database products and resolve vulnerabilities disclosed by researchers in a timely fashion.
"I would say easy fixes get done pretty quickly, within three to six months, but things that are harder and need some changes in architecture or have an impact on customers where customers have to make some changes to their products, to their software that uses the databases, those things don't get done in the CPU," said Alex Rothacker, manager of Application Security's research arm, TeamSHATTER. "We have a vulnerability disclosed where basically we can brute force any user's password ... we reported this two years ago and they haven't fixed it yet." 

 It's a complaint lodged by many researchers, who say that even as Oracle publicly states it wants to work with the research community to fix database issues, it isn't putting its shoulder into the effort. The numbers show that the proportion of quarterly critical patch updates for Oracle database products has diminished considerably over the last two years.
While some might come to the conclusion that there are fewer updates because Oracle's products are getting more secure, researchers say this trend has occurred simultaneously as the window between disclosure of vulnerabilities and patch releases for them has grown wider.

"They respond immediately and say 'Thank you very much for the information' and so on, but it sometimes takes more than a year to actually release a patch," said Slavik Markovich, VP and CTO of database security for McAfee. "I get the feeling that they don't invest enough or have enough people working on this so it takes a long time to patch." In the meantime, too, new database products--some of them security related, even--are released with the same type of vulnerabilities that researchers have been alerting Oracle to for years.

VMware acquires Shavlik Technologies for vulnerability, configuration management

Virtualization security giant VMware Inc., has announced it will acquire Shavlik Technologies, extending the company’s security portfolio into patch and configuration management.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. New Brighton, Minn-based Shavlik Technologies is a security firm that sells patch and configuration management software that can be configured to work in virtual environments. The company sells both on-premise and SaaS-based software that appeal to small and midsized businesses.
In March, Shavlik announced VMware GO, a SaaS offering it developed with VMware, which assists SMBs with deployment and management of VMware vSphere software. Mark Shavlik, CEO of Shavlik, said the company has been building its portfolio around its presence in the SMB market. Last Spring, the company announced a Web-based version of its software, stripped down to vulnerability and virtual machine management.
"The enthusiasm, creativity and operational excellence of our two companies will allow us to better serve our global customers and partners by accelerating IT management innovations," Shavlik said in a statement.
VMware said the two companies would develop a complete portfolio for managing, monitoring and securing IT environments, including developing a centralized IT management console and automated tools for patch management, compliance and configuration for virtual environments. The software could be used by managed service providers to better service their SMB customers, VMware said.

"With the Shavlik acquisition, VMware will be able to provide simple to use and affordable management services developed to address the specific demands of SMBs," Raghu Raghuram, senior vice president and general manager of cloud infrastructure and management at VMware, said in a statement.
VMware has slowly built up its security arsenal starting with the acquisition of Determina in 2006, which sold host-based intrusion prevention system (HIPS) technology that were configured to work in a variety of virtual scenarios.  It acquired BlueLane Technologies in 2008. BlueLane can sit between the hypervisor and the virtual machine for application-aware firewalling, visibility of traffic between virtual machines and intrusion prevention capabilities.
In 2010, VMware acquired Tricipher for identity and access management services. Tricpher provides secure authentication and single sign-on access for SaaS-based software. 
VMware’s acquisitions make it clear that it expects to grow out the features of its security product sets, said Pete Lindstrom, a research director with Spire Security. Lindstrom said Shavlik has a stellar reputation in the security industry for its patch management capabilities.  Shavlik has been slowly building out its capabilities into configuration and compliance management and extended it for virtual systems, he said.
“We’ve been talking forever about potential benefits for patching in virtual environments,” Lindstrom said. “It will be interesting to see if we get some traction into the benefits we’ve anticipated with patching for virtual instances.”

Oracle Issued Security Update of DDoS Vulnerability in Apache HTTPD



Oracle, the giant enterprise database company - and, of course, owner of the erstwhile Sun Microsystems - has just published an out-of-band security update. This is only the fifth time Oracle has issued an alert outside its routine quarterly patch cycle since introducing its own version of Patch Tuesday at the start of 2005.

Description:-
This security alert addresses the security issue CVE-2011-3192, a denial of service vulnerability in Apache HTTPD, which is applicable to Oracle HTTP Server products based on Apache 2.0 or 2.2. This vulnerability may be remotely exploitable without authentication, i.e. it may be exploited over a network without the need for a username and password. A remote user can exploit this vulnerability to impact the availability of un-patched systems.

Affected Products and Versions:-

  • Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g Release 1, versions 11.1.1.3.0, 11.1.1.4.0, 11.1.1.5.0
  • Oracle Application Server 10g Release 3, version 10.1.3.5.0 (Only affected when Oracle HTTP Server 10g based on Apache 2.0 has been installed from Application Server Companion CD)

Please note that Oracle Enterprise Manager includes the Oracle Fusion Middleware component that is affected by this vulnerability. Oracle Enterprise Manager is affected only if the affected Oracle Fusion Middleware version (noted above) is being used. Since a vulnerability affecting Oracle Fusion Middleware versions may affect Oracle Enterprise Manager, Oracle recommends that customers apply the fix for this vulnerability to the Oracle Fusion Middleware component of Oracle Enterprise Manager. Microsoft Released Emergency Patch Fix To Block Duqu Zero-Day exploit


Microsoft released emergency patch to fix the newly found zero-day exploit in windows kernel. The attack, discovered by Hungarian researchers, exploits a vulnerability in Windows' TrueType font engine. A full fix for the problem is still pending, and will not be part of Microsoft's "Patch Tuesday" fixes for November. In the company's security advisory Microsoft said that attackers exploiting the TrueType vulnerability—which Duqu exploited through a Microsoft Word document—could gain access to the Windows kernel and run shell code. "The attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights," Microsoft's statement said.
As a temporary workaround, Microsoft recommends shutting off access to T2EMBED.DLL, the dynamic link library that allows applications to display TrueType fonts. While the fix will prevent attacks, it also means that fonts won't display properly in applications. But Microsoft's security team sees the threat from Duqu as limited, stating that "overall, we see low customer impact at this time."

Willysy Malware Infects More than 6 Million WeSites

 
In less than two weeks, a malware injection that targets e-commerce Web pages has ballooned from 90,000 infected pages to more than 6 million. Malware willysy The malware, called willysy, exploits a vulnerability in a popular online merchant platform, osCommerce, according to Web application security provider Armorize, of San Francisco.
When the company initially reported the injection on July 24, it found 90,000 infected pages. When it took another look at the malware on August 3, it found the injection had spread to some 6.3 million pages.

Although the identity of the perpetrators of the attacks by the malware could not be identified by Armorize, the company did trace the forays to eight IP addresses, all located in the Ukraine.
Armorize explainedthat the attacks exploit three known vulnerabilities in version 2.2 of osCommerce. The exploits allow the attackers to place an invisible frame (iFrame) on the page and then inject malicious code (JavaScript) into the page, where it will infect visitors to the online store.
Once the infection makes it to shopper's computer, it targets vulnerabilities in Java, Adobe Reader, Windows Help Center and Internet Explorer. Although the flaws in those programs targeted by the infection are known and have been patched, the attackers are betting that the user hasn't patched all the programs.
Even the exploitation of osCommerce itself depends on lax patch management by the shopping site, since the holes in the program used by the attackers were patched in version 2.3 of the software released in November of last year. Since that time, two versions of the offering have been released, 2.3.1 and 3.0.1.

According to osCommerce, the open source software is used by some 249,000 store owners, developers, service providers and enthusiasts.
Attacks like the one discovered by Armorize can be especially harmful to small and medium-size businesses (SMB), asserts Frank Kenney, a former Gartner analyst and vice president of Global Strategy at Ipswitch, a file transfer security company in Lexington. While the makers of off-the-shelf software patch their programs often, he continued, the business still has to invest in the resources to insure that proper patch work is done. "That requires an outlay of capital that SMBs are not willing to deal with or don't have within their margins," he says.
Such lack of diligence can hurt a business in the long run, because security breaches can invite scrutiny from credit card companies, he explained. A credit card company may refuse to allow the business to use its services until it shows a certain level of security compliance that is out of the reach of the business from a financial or time and resource point of view.
That would have dire consequences for an SMB, he maintains. "The ability to process cards is the difference between a small business or a chain of mom-and-pop stores being open today and being closed tomorrow," he says.

Adobe confirmed a serious security hole in Windows 8, hackers have been aiming at  Microsoft's Windows 8 PCs for several weeks as it is vulnerable to attack by exploits. Its very unfortunate for those who runs all the four (consumer previewdeveloper preview, release preview & enterprise) pre-release version of Windows 8, because the Redmond based software giant Microsoft said it will not patch the bug in Flash Player until what it called "GA," for "general availability." That would be Oct. 26, when Windows 8 hits retail and PCs powered by the new operating system go on sale. 
"We will update Flash in Windows 8 via Windows Update as needed," a spokeswoman said in a reply to questions. "The current version of Flash in the Windows 8 RTM build does not have the latest fix, but we will have a security update coming through Windows Update in the GA timeframe."
Microsoft, not Adobe, is responsible for patching Flash Player in Windows 8 because the company took a page from Google's playbook and integrated the popular media software with Internet Explorer 10 (IE10), the new operating system's browser. Last month, Adobe issued two updates for Flash Player that patched eight vulnerabilities, some of which were ranked as "1" by the company, its highest threat warning. One of the vulnerabilities, tagged as CVE-2012-1535, was patched Aug. 14, but had been exploited for an indeterminate time before that.
In fact, CVE-2012-1535 was one of four "zero-days," or unpatched vulnerabilities, exploited in a 16-week stretch by an elite hacker gang revealed by Symantec researchers on Friday. Microsoft has not updated the Flash in IE10 within Windows 8 to accommodate those two sets of patches, Adobe confirmed Friday. "Flash Player 11.3.372.94 does not incorporate the fixes released in APSB12-18 and APSB12-19," said Wiebke Lips, a spokeswoman for Adobe, referring to the Aug. 14 and Aug. 21 Flash updates.
Windows 8 RTM's IE10 identifies the integrated Flash Player as version 11.3.372.94, a more recent build than the one in Windows 8 Release Preview, but older than the most-up-to-date version for Windows, 11.4.402.265, which Adobe delivered on Aug. 21.

Adobe actually told some users about Windows 8's Flash situation two weeks ago. On an Adobe support forum, a company representative announced on Aug. 23 that there would be no Flash update for Windows 8 and IE10 until late October. "Since Windows 8 has not yet been released for general availability, the update channel is not active," said Chris Campbell, identified as an Adobe employee. "Once this goes live, you'll start getting updates to Flash Player."

GIF Vulnerability Patch For Photoshop Mac Users


The folks at Adobe have been keeping themselves busy this week patching several security holes in their software, including one affecting Photoshop Mac users.
According to a recent technical note on Adobe's site, those using the company’s professional photo editing software on a Mac are advised to patch immediately using Photoshop Standard Multiplugin CS5/CS5.1.
Adobe has recently learned that opening a GIF image of unknown origin may have a negative outcome. Here’s the situation in the Flash maker’s own words:
“The standard multiplugin update addresses a security vulnerability in the GIF file format, where opening a malicious GIF file would cause the application to crash.”

“This update is recommended for anyone who opens GIF files in Photoshop,”
Adobe says.

Surely those editing multiple pictures at the same time would hate to see Photoshop crash before them simply because they opened a GIF image.

It works on systems running Mac OS X 10.5.7 (Leopard) and Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and it applies to one of the following language versions of Photoshop CS5 or Photoshop CS5.1: English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Italian, Dutch, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Korean, Japanese, Czech, Polish, Russian, Turkish, Hungarian, Ukrainian, or Romanian.

After downloading the ".zip" file containing the Photoshop CS5/CS5.1 Standard Multiplugin Update, Mac users must decompress the contained file and drag it to a specific location where Photoshop is installed.

Microsoft Released Security Bulletins To Patch 23 Vulnerabilities (Including Internet Explorer, .NET, Silverlight)

Microsoft has released eight security bulletins to address a total of 23 vulnerabilities across a number of its products on its October Patch Tuesday. One update for Internet Explorer alone closes eight critical holes. An update for .NET and Silverlight closes another critical vulnerability that only requires victims to visit a specially crafted web page in order to infect their computers with malicious code. Microsoft says that this hole can also be exploited to compromise a server if an attacker has the ability to upload ASP.NET pages to an Internet Information Server (IIS) and execute them there.
The remaining updates are rated as important by Microsoft; they fix vulnerabilities in the Microsoft Active Accessibility and Windows Media Center components, in the Windows kernel, in the Host Integration Server, in the Windows Ancillary Function Driver and in the Forefront Unified Access Gateway (UAG). Although some of these holes also enable attackers to inject and execute code, they require more user interaction than those in Internet Explorer.
Microsoft has also released further patches to fix vulnerabilities that are based on "binary planting", an attack which involves causing Windows to load DLLs from shared network volumes without a user's permission. As with the previous Patch Tuesday, an updated version of the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) was released at the same time.

Oracle Will Issue a Patch To Fix 76 Security Vulnerabilities


Oracle has announced that it plans to close a total of 76 security vulnerabilities later on 18th October as part of its Critical Patch Update. The company says that the patch day will affect "hundreds of Oracle products".
A total of 56 holes will be closed across Oracle Database, Fusion Middleware, Application Server, Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition, Identity Management, WebLogic Portal and Server, Outside In Technology, Enterprise Manager Grid Control, and the E-Business Suite. Other affected products include Agile Product Supplier Collaboration for Process, PeopleSoft Enterprise HRMS and PeopleTools, Siebel CRM, Clinical, Thesaurus Management System, the Sun Product Suite, Oracle Linux 5 and Sun Ray. A further 20 vulnerabilities will be addressed in Java SE, six of which are applicable to JRockit. Oracle says that 19 of these issues can be exploited remotely without authentication. Some of the Java holes have a CVSS (Common Vulnerability Scoring System) score of 10.0, the highest possible level of severity.
In its pre-release announcement, the company says that users are advised to install the patches as soon as they become available because of "the threat posed by a successful attack". Executive Summaries of the vulnerabilities can be found in the security advisories.

PHP developers announce the immediate availability of PHP 5.3.10. which closes remote code execution vulnerability. In their previous release a serious Denial of Service (DoS) Vulnerability was found later the team has release a security update of 5.3.9 which close that DoS vulnerability. To do so, the developers limited the maximum possible number of input parameters to 1,000 in php_variables.c using max_input_vars. Because of mistakes in the implementation, hackers can intentionally exceed this limit and inject and execute code. The bug is considered to be critical as code can be remotely injected over the web. The development version of PHP already has a patch for the bug, but the PHP developers have yet to issue an official advisory. It is not yet clear whether there are sensible immediate measures and workarounds for concerned.
In this release developers are working to fix a critical security vulnerability in PHP that they introduced with a recent security patch. The current stable release is affected; however, it is not yet clear whether the questionable patch was also applied to older versions. PHP strongly encouraged all users to upgrade to PHP 5.3.10.

Google Deodorizes Sniffable Android Security Flaw



A new round of patching has begun for Android phones, the vast majority of which were found to be vulnerable to hackers if the owner was using it on an open WiFi network. The flaw affected 99.7 percent of all Android smartphones running Android 2.3.3 and earlier versions because they don't use a secure HTTPS connection, according to researchers.

Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) has begun rolling out a patch to fix a security flaw in versions 2.3.3 and earlier of its Android mobile operating system.
That flaw affects all Google services using the ClientLogin authentication protocol.
It lets hackers access any personal data available through Android's application programming interfaces (APIs).
"The flaw is now fixed for all versions of Android worldwide," Google spokesperson Randall Sarafa told LinuxInsider.
The patch is being rolled out in stages over several days, Sarafa said.

The Hole in Android
The flaw gained media attention after it was publicized by the University of Ulm.
Here's how it works: When an application wants to get access to Android's APIs, it requests an authentication token through ClientLogin by providing an account name and password.
The system then returns an authorization token, which is good for up to two weeks.
If the token is used in requests sent over unencrypted networks, such as WiFi networks, hackers can steal it. They can then use the token to access any personal data made available through the service API.
The hackers will gain full access to the victim's calendar, contacts information, or private Web-based photo albums. They'll be able to view, delete, or modify any calendar events, contacts, or private pictures, the Ulm University researchers said.
The flaw affected 99.7 percent of all Android smartphones running Android 2.3.3 and earlier versions because they don't use a secure HTTPS connection, the researchers said.
Google's patch forces an HTTPS connection for calendar and contacts sync on Android, Sarafa said.

More on the Flaw

Authentication tokens are widely used for online services such as eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY). They are also used by software and application vendors such as Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Splunk, and in Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iOS mobile operating system.
There was a problem with the authentication token on Android because Google's implementation was faulty, Paul Laudanski, director of ESET's cyber threat analysis center, told LinuxInsider.
"The entry point is having an unpatched or vulnerable Android system connecting to Google services using ClientAuth over an unencrypted public WiFi network," Laudanski explained. "The correct implementation is to transmit the authorization token in a secured manner."
Google services transmit the authorization token as an open text message, which can be easily stolen.
If the technology is implemented correctly and the authorization tokens are sent securely, then even if an unencrypted WiFi network is used, the user information would appear as garbage to snoopers, Laudanski pointed out.
Google's implementation of the technology may not have been faulty in and of itself, argues Mike Paquette, chief strategy officer at Top Layer Security.
"The problem appears to be the use of the ClientLogin protocol, allowing these sniffable authentication protocols, combined with a long expiry time," Paquette told LinuxInsider. "This makes exploits practical and even likely," he added.
Android smartphone owners should stay away from heavily used public WiFi hotspots, Paquette warned. "It's likely that attackers would target areas with large numbers of users of public WiFi in order to have the greatest return," he explained.

Old Problems Refreshed

The security flaw in Android was apparently first discovered by Dan Wallach of Princeton University, who blogged about it in February.
In an experiment during his undergraduate security class, he set up a sniffer with fellow students to listen in on his Android smartphone. They used Wireshark and Mallory.
Wireshark is a network protocol analyzer for Unix and Windows. Mallory is a transparent TCP and UDP proxy. It can be used to access network streams and assess mobile Web applications, among other things.
UDP, the User Datagram Protocol, is one of the core members of the Internet Protocol (IP) Suite. It lets applications directly send messages, or datagrams, to other hosts on an IP network.
The team found that Google doesn't encrypt traffic to Google Calendar, although it properly encrypts traffic to Gmail and Google Voice. Eavesdroppers could see victims' calendar transactions and likely impersonate them on Google Calendar, Wallach found.
The University of Ulm researchers built on Wallach's research.

SAP Will Patch Their Vulnerability Which Was Exposed By (Blackhat 2011 US)


A reportedly serious security bug affecting the J2EE (Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition) engine in SAP's NetWeaver middleware will be patched soon, SAP said Friday.
NetWeaver underpins SAP's range of enterprise software, including its flagship Business Suite ERP (enterprise resource planning) product. The bug was discussed by security researcher and ERPScan CTO Alexander Polyakov during a presentation at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas on Thursday.
The vulnerability makes it possible to crack SAP systems over the Internet by circumventing authorization checks, Polyakov wrote in a blog post before the conference. "For example, it is possible to create a user and assign him to the administrators group using two unauthorized requests to the system."
The attack is also possible on systems that are protected by two-factor authentication systems that use both a secret key and password, he added. ERPscan is making a tool that can detect the problem available at no charge.
"SAP is working closely with Alexander Polyakov on this issue," SAP spokesman Andy Kendzie said in a statement Friday. "SAP will deliver a patch to its customers shortly."
The patch will come as part of a regular security update, and not an out-of-cycle emergency fix, he added.
The news comes shortly after Oracle's release of Java SE 7. The language update shipped with bugs that Oracle engineers knew about prior to the release, a move met with serious consternation from some critics. Oracle plans to fix the bug in an update.

Earlier hackers found zero-day exploit in flash player which can allow an attacker to hack you web-cam remotely later Adobe patched that. Before releasing Flash Player 11 Adobe issued new privacy policy and security update but now it seems that those are of zero use. 11.1.102.55 and earlier versions for Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Solaris, Adobe Flash Player 11.1.112.61 and earlier versions for Android 4.x, and Adobe Flash Player 11.1.111.5 and earlier versions for Android 3.x and 2.x. These vulnerabilities could cause a crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system.

Later Adobe confirmed that and immediately released a patch to close the security hole. Through this security release Adobe also resolves a universal cross-site scripting vulnerability that could be used to take actions on a user's behalf on any website or webmail provider, if the user visits a malicious website. There are reports that this vulnerability (CVE-2012-0767) is being exploited in the wild in active targeted attacks designed to trick the user into clicking on a malicious link delivered in an email message (Internet Explorer on Windows only). Google's Chrome Web browser, which directly integrates Flash into its software (unlike competing browsers) also received an update to reflect Adobe's patch update.

This year is going bad to worse for MAC users. Earlier we have seen more than 600,000 Mac user infected by Flashback Trojan after this one another Mac Trojan "Backdoor.OSX.SabPub" penetrated mac security. Recently Microsoft has detected a new piece of malware targeting Apple OS X computers that exploits a vulnerability in the Office productivity suite patched nearly three years ago. The malware is not widespread, according to Jeong Wook Oh of Microsoft's Malware Protection Center. But it does show that hackers pay attention if it's found people do not apply patches as those fixes are released, putting their computers at a higher risk of becoming infected.
The exploit discovered by Microsoft doesn't work with OS X Lion, but does work with Snow Leopard and prior versions. Oh wrote that it is likely attackers have knowledge about the computers they are attacking, such as the victim's operating system version and patch levels. The malware delivered by the exploit is written specifically for OS X and is basically a "backdoor," or a tool that allows for remote control of a computer. Microsoft advised those who use Microsoft Office 2004 or 2008 for Mac or the Open XML File Format Converter for Mac to ensure those products have applied the patch.

Hackers Exploiting Old Ruby on Rails Vulnerability (CVE-2013-0156) To Compromise Web Servers & Create IRC Botnet
A critical vulnerability on Ruby on Rails spotted in January this year which was deemed “critical” at the same time yet again found in the wild. The vulnerability known as CVE-2013-0156 that affected versions 3.0.20 and 2.3.16 again rises it's hand. Though a security patch was released by the Rails developers. But as we all know that many server administrator used to be unaware of these events have not patched their systems. As a result hackers and cyber criminals are actively exploiting a critical vulnerability in the Ruby on Rails Web application development framework in order to compromise Web servers and create a dangerous botnet. This major security issue was first discovered by a security consultant Mr. Jeff Jarmoc of research firm Matasano Security. In his blog Jarmoc said "It’s pretty surprising that it’s taken this long to surface in the wild, but less surprising that people are still running vulnerable installations of Rails. It also appears to be affecting some web hosts." According to his blog post -the exploit that's currently being used by attackers adds a custom cron job -- a scheduled task on Linux machines that executes a sequence of commands. Those commands download a malicious C source file from a remote server, compile it locally and execute it. The resulting malware is a bot that connects to an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) server and joins a predefined channel where it waits for commands from the attackers. A pre-compiled version of the malware is also downloaded in case the compilation procedure fails on the compromised systems.
"Functionality is limited, but includes the ability to download and execute files as commanded, as well as changing servers," Jarmoc said. "There's no authentication performed, so an enterprising individual could hijack these bots fairly easily by joining the IRC server and issuing the appropriate commands." But the matter of relief is that Jarmoc concluded while saying "this is a pretty straightforward skiddy exploit of a vulnerability that has been publicly known, and warned about, for months."

But still administrators who have not yet patched their Rails version should immediately should update the Ruby on Rails installations on their servers to at least versions 3.2.11, 3.1.10, 3.0.19 or 2.3.15 which contain the patch for this vulnerability. However, the best course of action is probably to update to the latest available Rails versions, depending on the branch used, since other critical vulnerabilities have been addressed since then.

Microsoft now issuing security advisories about third-party Windows bugs

 
Microsoft has expanded its vulnerability disclosure program to include security bulletins about third-party Windows software as well as its own applications.
The first bulletins, released last weekend, cover two flaws in Google Chrome and one in Opera ll, both of which were patched by December 2010. Microsoft has promised to contact third-party vendors before releasing advisories, but it has reserved the right to issue notification before a patch has been released in cases where a flaw is under active attack.
The software giant is following the same policy for the handling of bugs in third-party software as it does for flaws in its own applications, which it describes as a Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure policy.
Microsoft has privately supplied security assessment about bugs to third-party suppliers since August 2008. By releasing these advisories in public, it hopes to bolster the security of the Windows ecosystem.
The process might conceivably lead to the release of third-party software updates during the regular Patch Tuesday update cycle but we're not there yet and it's unlikely that Google and Adobe would want to hand over too much control over this process to Redmon

DSH is Taking Anonymous More Seriously & Issued A Security Bulletin To Warn About The Upcoming Cyber Threats



The Department of Homeland Security is beginning to take Anonymous and other non-professional cyber-attackers more seriously as it issues a warning about potential attacks.
The United States Department of Homeland Security warned the security community about potential attacks from hacking collective Anonymous over the next few months. The Sept. 2 security bulletin from the DHS National Cyber-Security and Communications Integration Center warned financial services companies to be on the lookout for attackers operating under the Anonymous umbrella to "solicit ideologically dissatisfied, sympathetic employees" to the cause. The collective recently took to Twitter to persuade employees within the financial sector to hand over information and access to enterprise networks. Though such attempts may have been unsuccessful so far, "unwilling coercion through embarrassment or blackmail may be a risk to personnel," the DHS bulletin warned.
DHS issued the bulletin primarily for cyber-security professionals and staff in charge of protecting critical infrastructure. The bulletin also refer to new tools that Anonymous may be using in launching future attacks. Anonymous has been primarily using the Low Orbit Ion Cannon, a fairly simple testing software that can ping a server repeatedly, to launch its distributed denial of service attacks. Some of the members have been working on a new DDoS tool, based on JavaScript,  dubbed #RefRef.

The new attack tool is said to be capable of using the server's own resources and processing power to launch a denial of service attack against itself, but "so far it's unclear what the true capabilities of #RefRef are," the DHS said in the bulletin. The tool is slated to be released Sept. 17.
DHS also referenced the "Apache Killer" Perl script that can be used to launch denial of service attacks against Web servers running the popular Apache software. Apache developers released a patch earlier this week to fix the vulnerability in Apache 2.2. Administrators have been urged to patch their servers immediately.

The DHS also mentioned three cyber-attacks and civil protests Anonymous has already announced. "Occupy Wall Street" is the first scheduled one, for Sept. 17. Announced by a group Adbusters in July and actively supported by Anonymous, the goal is to get 20,000 individuals to gather on Wall Street to protest various U.S. government policies. Similar rallies targeting financial districts are being planned in Madrid, Milan, London, Paris and San Francisco.
Another protest in October, also led by Adbusters, is scheduled to be held at the Washington, D.C. National Mall to mark the 10th anniversary of the war in Afghanistan. There is also the supposed Nov. 11 attack against Facebook and Project Mayhem, scheduled for Dec. 21, 2012, DHS warned. There are indications that Project Mayhem would be a combination of physical disruption and targeting of information systems.

The bulletin itself is unusual in that DHS hasn't commented on the activities of Anonymous ever since the group stepped up its efforts over the past few months, attacking federal agencies and private corporations to protest a wide range of issues. As anyone following the security space undoubtedly knows, there have been at least one or two attacks by Anonymous, even more, each week for the past few months, so the bulletin may be just stating the obvious when warning of future potential attacks.
"Anonymous has shown through recently reported incidents that it has members who have relatively more advanced technical capabilities who can also marshal large numbers of willing, but less technical, participants for DDOS activities," the DHS said.
