Pwn2Own 2013 -Hack Major Web-browser, Adobe Reader, Flash or Java & Earn in Million Dollars 

Since the last two years the Pwn2Own hacker contest has become an important fixture in the world of testing the security of software applications, operating systems and hardware devices. In last two years we have seen several hackers, security professionals have expressed their enthusiasm and joined Pwn2Own where four major and widely browser's security get compromised, in order to make applications, software more safe and secure. Last year we have reported how different hackers across the globe taken part in Pwn2Own and successfully hacked Google Chrome, IE & Firefox, and earned millions of dollars. But the contest of this year has some more twist than before as, HP TippingPoint and Google, sponsor of Pwn2Own, has made clear that it is expanding the focus of the competition beyond browsers. Also, Pwn2own 2013 will include $560,000 in prize money for demonstrations of exploits in the major web browsers, Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash or Oracle Java

Contest Dates:-

The contest will take place the 6th, 7th, and 8th of March in Vancouver, British Columbia during the CanSecWest 2013 conference. Rules & Prizes:-

HP ZDI is offering more than half a million dollars (USD) in cash and prizes during the competition for vulnerabilities and exploitation techniques in the below categories. The first contestant to successfully compromise a selected target will win the prizes for the category.

    • Google Chrome on Windows 7 ($100,000)
    • Microsoft Internet Explorer, either
      • IE 10 on Windows 8 ($100,000), or
      • IE 9 on Windows 7 ($75,000)
    • Mozilla Firefox on Windows 7 ($60,000)
    • Apple Safari on OS X Mountain Lion ($65,000)
  • Web Browser Plug-ins using Internet Explorer 9 on Windows 7
    • Adobe Reader XI ($70,000)
    • Adobe Flash ($70,000)

The targets will be running on the latest, fully patched version of the Windows 7, 8, and OS X Mountain Lion. All targets will be installed in their default configurations, as this is how a majority of users will have them configured. As always, the vulnerabilities utilized in the attack must be unknown and not previously reported to the vendor. If a sandbox is present, a full sandbox escape is required to win. A given vulnerability may only be used once across all categories.
Upon successful demonstration of the exploit, the contestant will provide HP ZDI a fully functioning exploit and all the details of the vulnerability used in the attack. In the case that multiple vulnerabilities were exploited to gain code execution, details about all the vulnerabilities (memory corruption, infoleaks, escalations, etc.) leveraged and the sequence in which they are used must be provided to receive the prize money. The initial vulnerability utilized in the attack must be in the registered category.
Along with prize money, the contestant will receive the compromised laptop and 20,000 ZDI reward points* which immediately qualifies them for Silver standing.

Attackers target applications


Software applications rather than operating systems or web browsers were the favoured target of cyber attackers last year, although the total number of application vulnerabilities was significantly down compared to 2009, a new report from Microsoft has shown.
Microsoft’s latest Security Intelligence Report found that overall, the industry’s disclosure of vulnerabilities – holes in software that bad guys can exploit – has been declining since 2006. Microsoft attributed this to better development practices and quality control on the part of developers, which it said results in more secure software.
Attacks exploiting weaknesses in Java rose sharply during the third quarter of 2010, beating every other kind of exploitation tracked by Microsoft’s Malware Protection Centre. Exploits using HTML and JavaScript increased steadily throughout the year and continue to represent a large portion of exploits, the report said.
In the third quarter, the number of Java attacks increased to fourteen times the number recorded in the previous quarter, following the discovery of two vulnerabilities in the Java Virtual Machine. These flaws alone accounted for 85pc of the Java exploits detected in the second half of 2010. By the end of the year Java exploits far outnumbered all other types of software vulnerabilities such as HTML/Script, operating systems, document readers and even Adobe Flash.

Drop-offs in flow of spam

The flow of spam also saw two massive drop-offs during last year, in September and December, which Microsoft said was due to the elimination of two sources – the Cutwail Spambot and Rustock. While Cutwail was taken out as part of an operation by security researchers, Rustock re-emerged in January and has begun sending spam again.

Oracle to Mitigate 73 Security Vulnerabilities in Upcoming Critical Patch Update


Oracle is all set for the upcoming critical patch update. The pre-release announcement by the company indicates that in all 73 vulnerabilities associated with numerous products will be mitigated during the next critical patch update. The update will mitigate security vulnerabilities associated with Oracle database server, fusion middleware, enterprise manager, e-business suite, supply chain products, PeopleSoft, JD Edwards suite, Siebel CRM, industry applications, Sun products and Open office suite.

The company releases quarterly critical patch updates on Tuesday closest to 17th day of January, April, July and October. The company uses Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) version 2.0 to rate vulnerabilities. The vulnerabilities are assigned scores based on the prerequisites for exploiting the vulnerability, ease of exploit, and impact of the attack on availability, confidentiality and integrity. Base scores range from 0.0 to 10.0 with ten being the most severe vulnerability.

Vulnerabilities may be caused by technological flaws, programming errors, and other human errors. Developers are required constantly upgrade their technical skills through online IT degree courses, training programs and refresher courses to deal with ever evolving threats.

The critical patch update will address six vulnerabilities in database server. The vulnerabilities affect components such as application service level management, database vault, Oracle help, security service, warehouse builder, UIX and network foundation. Two of the six vulnerabilities do not require authentication for exploitation of vulnerabilities. Highest base score for security flaws affecting database server is 6.5. The update will mitigate 9 flaws associated with fusion middleware, 6 of which are exploitable without authentication.

The vulnerabilities affect Oracle help, HTTP server, JRockit, outside In technology, security service, WebLogic server, portal and single sign on. Oracle has assigned highest severity score of 10 for vulnerabilities affecting fusion middleware. 4 vulnerabilities will be fixed in Oracle applications, 2 of which are exploitable without authentication. The vulnerabilities have been assigned a base score of 4.3 and affect application object library, applications install, and web ADI. The update will resolve a flaw in Supply chain products suite, which is exploitable without authentication. Highest base score for vulnerability in supply chain products suite is 4.3 and affects Agile technology program.

14 security flaws have related to PeopleSoft Suite will be fixed in the upcoming critical patch, 1 of which is exploitable without authentication. Highest base score for security flaws associated with PeopleSoft suite is 4.3 and affects PeopleSoft Enterprise, Enterprise CRM, ELS, HRMS and People tools. The critical patch update will resolve 8 issues associated with JD Edwards suite, 7 of which are exploitable without authentication. Highest base score for vulnerabilities in JD Edwards suite is 6.4 and affects EnterpriseOne tools.

The update will address a vulnerability associated with industry applications, which affects InForm. Highest base score for vulnerability in industry applications is 5.5. 8 security flaws will be mitigated in Sun products suite, seven of which are exploitable without authentication. Oracle has assigned highest severity score of 10 for security flaws affecting Sun products suite. The components affected include Java Dynamic Management Kit, Java system web server, Solaris, OpenSSO Enterprise, GlassFish Enterprise server, java system application server, java system access manager policy agent, and java system messaging server.

The upcoming critical patch update will fix 8 security issues related to Open Office suite, of which 7 are exploitable without authentication. Highest base score for security flaws in Open Office suite is 9.3. Open Office, StarOffice and StarSuite are affected by the vulnerabilities.

Vulnerabilities are identified by professionals qualified in IT degree programs and security certifications such as penetration testing. Developers encourage both in-house and independent security researchers to detect and report security flaws so that they can be mitigated before exploitation by attackers.

Online IT courses, e-tutorials, security blogs and alerts from computer emergency response teams could help users in gaining insights on security threats, their implications and importance of security updates. Users must keep track of the security releases and install necessary updates to safeguard their systems and data from unauthorized access.

Mass ASP.NET Infection Ongoing, So Far 614,000 Web-Pages Affected


An infection that causes poorly configured websites to silently bombard visitors with malware attacks has hit almost 614,000 webpages, Google searches show.
The mass infection, which redirects users to a site exploiting old versions of Oracle's Java, Adobe's Flash player and various browsers, was first disclosed by Armorize on Wednesday. At the time, it appeared to affect about 180,000 pages. 


By time of writing on Friday, the initial attack and a follow-on exploit has spread to 613,890 combined pages. The SQL injection attack mostly exploits websites running Microsoft's ASP.Net web application framework.
The infection injects code into websites operated by restaurants, hospitals, and other small businesses and plants an invisible link in visitors' browsers to sites including jjghui.com and nbnjkl.com. Those sites in turn redirected to several other websites that include highly obfuscated code. At the end of the line is a cocktail of attacks that exploit known vulnerabilities in Java and the other targeted programs. Computers running unpatched versions are then commandeered. Servers in the attack used IP addresses based in the US and Russia.

The scripts causes the visiting browser to load an iframe first from www3.strongdefenseiz.in and then from www2.safetosecurity.rr.nu. Multiple browser-based drive-by download exploits are served depending on the visiting browser. In a drive-by download attack, visitors who navigate to the infected websites will be installed with malware on their machines without their knowledge. This is if they have outdated browsing platforms (browser or Adobe PDF or Adobe Flash or Java etc).
This wave of mass injection incident is targeting ASP ASP.NET websites. Currently, the 6 out of 43 antivirus vendors on VirusTotal can detect the dropped malware.

G00d3y Penetrating Facebook Security, Found By Team Greyhat (TGH)


Well known hackers group Team Greyhat (TGH) has found serious Security flaws in Facebook. According to TGH using that vulnerability an attacker can hijack any facebook group by removing the original Admin. They have named it "G00d3y" vulnerability. Core team member from TGH (R00t3r-tgh, X-terminal, Th3-R00t3r, Hunt009s, Skywalk3r, eRr00r, Zer0) has also written an exploit based on java script which is penetrating that newly found FB flaws. Recently Team Greyhat also hijacked and hacked the official Facebook Group of Hindustan Cyber Army by using G00d3y Exploit


The above screen shots is clearly saying that TGH has hijacked the Hindustan Cyber Army group. They have replace the group logo and defaced the group by uploading their own photo. Remember earlier MAC Security Blog reported that the latest version, Flashback.D, has gotten a bit sneakier. First, it checks to see if the user is running Mac OS X in VMware Fusion. If so, it does not execute. It does this because many malware researchers test malware in virtual machines, rather than infect full installations, as it is easier to delete them and start over with clean copies. This means that security researchers analyzing and looking for this malware need to be running regular Macs.
 Yet again Mac users became the victim of another trojan. This new Trojan virus is capable of infecting their computers and stealing passwords to services such as Google, PayPal, online banking & so on. This virus is using a new installation method When a user visits a crafted web page, the new variant either tries to exploit two old security vulnerabilities or deploys a Java Applet which tries to trick the user into believing it has been certified by Apple. According to Mac Security Blog (Intego):- This new variant of the Flashback Trojan horse uses three methods to infect Macs. The malware first tries to install itself using one of two Java vulnerabilities. If this is successful, users will be infected with no intervention. If these vulnerabilities are not available – if the Macs have Java up to date – then it attempts a third method of installation, trying to fool users through a social engineering trick. The applet displays a self-signed certificate, claiming to be issued by Apple. Most users won’t understand what this means, and click on Continue to allow the installation to continue.
It is worth noting that Flashback.G will not install if VirusBarrier X6 is present, or if a number of other security programs are installed on the Mac in question. It does this to avoid detection. It seems that the malware writers feel it is best to avoid Macs where the malware might be detected, and focus on the many that aren’t protected.
Earlier also Mac users faced such attacks where OSX/Revir-B trojan was installed behind a PDF, and giving hackers remote access to MAC computers, not only Revier-B also Linux Tsunami trojan Called "Kaiten" targeted Mac OS users in 2011. Also another malware named "Devil Robber" which was also make MAC users victim while stealing their personal informations.

0-Day Vulnerability in Yahoo Messenger, An Attacker Can Change The Status Update Remotely


Zero day exploit found in Yahoo messenger allowing attackers to change the status update remotely. Version 11.x of the Messenger client (including the freshly-released 11.5.0.152-us) is infected with this 0day vulnerability. The status message change occurs when an attacker simulates sending a file to a user. This action manipulates the $InlineAction parameter (responsible for the way the Messenger form displays the accept or deny the transfer) in order to load an iFrame which, when loaded, swaps the status message for the attacker's custom text. This status may also include a dubious link. This iFrame is sent as a regular message and comes from another Yahoo Instant Messenger user, even if the user is not in the victim’s contact list. The exploit delivers its payload when the attacker simulates sending a file to the user. The bogus file tricks Messenger into loading an iFrame that then swaps the status message for whatever garbage the attacker wants to load, including a potentially "dubious" link, as Bitdefender describes it. The iFrame comes over as a regular message from another Yahoo Instant Messenger user, even if the user isn't in the victim's contact list.

  • Why it is so dangerous? 
Status messages are highly efficient in terms of click-through rate, as they address a small group of friends. Chances are that, once displayed, they will be clicked by most contacts who see them. One scenario: the victim's status message is swapped with an attention-getting text that points to a page hosting a zero-day exploit targeting the IE browser, the locally installed Java or Flash environments or even a PDF bug, to mention only a few. Whenever a contact clicks on the victim’s status message, chances are they get infected without even knowing it. All this time, the victim is unaware that their status message has been hijacked.
Another lucrative approach to changed status messages is affiliate marketing (ie: sites that pay affiliates for visits or purchases through a custom link). Someone can easily set up an affiliate account, generate custom links for products in campaign, then massively target vulnerable YIM victims to change their status with the affiliate link. Then, they just wait for the contact-generated traffic to kick in. There are actually a couple of services that pay YIM users to change their status with custom links as part of their business.

Microsoft Issues 'fix it' To Close Internet Explorer 0-day Vulnerability 

Last few days the whole cyber world have gone through with so many drama of Internet Explorer's security bug, as researchers have unveiled four active exploits of a zero-day vulnerability in the browser. As expected the software giant Microsoft has released an emergency fix to get rid of these major security issues. Microsoft released a “fix it” tool for a critical security flaw in most versions of Internet Explorer 6, 7, 8 and 9  that hackers have been exploiting to break into Windows systems. The company said it expects to issue an official patch (MS12-063) for the vulnerability on Friday, Sept. 21. "While we have only seen a few attempts to exploit this issue, impacting an extremely limited number of people, we are taking this proactive step to help ensure Internet Explorer customers are protected and able to safely browse online," said Yunsun Wee, director of Microsoft Trustworthy Computing in a statement. The zero-day in IE 6-9 is a use-after-free memory corruption vulnerability, similar to a buffer overflow, that would enable an attacker to remotely execute code on a compromised machine. The original exploit payload dropped the PoisonIvy remote access Trojan (RAT) via a corrupted Flash movie file. The latest payload discovered dropped the PlugX RAT via the same corrupted Flash movie, Blasco said. He also said the new exploits are the work of the Chinese hacker group Nitro, the same group behind a pair of Java zero-day exploits disclosed in August.

Blasco also said the new exploits appear to be targeting defense contractors in the United States and India.
Microsoft recommended several workarounds Tuesday morning before announcing its intention to send out a FixIt.
  • Setting Internet and local Internet security zone settings to high, which would block ActiveX Controls and Active Scripting in both zones
  • Configure IE to prompt the user before running Active Scripting, or disable Active Scripting in both zones
  • Use of Microsoft's Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit provides mitigations as well, and would not impact website usability, as both of the first two options might.
Microsoft also said that IE running on Windows Server 2003, 2008 and 2008R2 runs in a restricted mode that mitigates the vulnerability. Outlook, Outlook Express and Windows Mail also open HTML messages in a restricted zone, mitigating the vulnerabilty but should a user click a link in a message, they could still be vulnerable to exploit.

URL Shorteners Have been Exploited Malware Writers


URL shorteners (such as bit.ly) have escalated in popularity thanks to services like Twitter where every character counts. However they come at a security cost.
Spammers have been using them to for some time, and anyone who frequents twitter will have seen the pornography industry using them. However Symantec’s Nick Johnston reports on a worrying trend, using them to hide malware using so-called drive-by attacks. He reports on one exploit.
The attack abused at least five different URL shortening sites. The message claimed to be from an inter-bank funds transfer service, claiming that a funds transfer had been cancelled. To find out why the transfer was cancelled, recipients were encouraged to click on a link supposedly pointing to a PDF file, but actually pointing to a shortened URL. This shortened URL then redirects to a site with several drive-by exploits.
A drive-by attack is one that exploits security flaws in browsers and causes them to download and execute malicious code simply by visiting a page. They do not require a user to click on anything or download files. In the example cited, the page exploited holes in PDF documents, Java and a Windows Help Center exploit. Expect more of this, warns Symantec.
We saw hundreds of unique shortened URLs being used to link to this malware, and expect to see malware authors using this technique in future.

Win7 machines harder hit by infection as VXers change tactics



Win7 infection rates rose during the second half of 2010 even as malware hit rates on XP machines declined, according to official statistics from Microsoft.
The latest edition of Microsoft's Security Intelligence Report shows an infection rate of four Win7 PCs per 1,000 in the second half of 2010, up from three Win7 PCs per 1,000 during the first half of 2010. The rise of more than 30 per cent contrasts with a drop of the infection rate, albeit from a much higher starting point, for older and less secure machines running Windows XP. Both figures were taken from scans using Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT).
Infection rates for Win XP SP3 machines fell from around 18 per 1,000 to 14 per 1,000 PCs. Machines running XP SP3 fared better than computers running only XP SP2, where infection rates dropped from around 20 per 1,000 to 18 per 1,000 over the same period. Infection rates on Vista machines also dropped from around 11 per 1,000 to 10 per 1,000 or slightly less, for machines running SP2.
As Microsoft points out, Win7 machines have more built-in security protection and are more immune from security attacks than machines running Vista or Win XP. However this security performance boost is decreasing, possibly as a result in a change of tactics by malware-peddling baddies.
Microsoft records a massive fourteen-fold rise in Java-based attacks during Q3 2010, as miscreants sought to exploit a pair of vulnerabilities prevalent at the time. These two vulnerabilities (CVE-2008-5353 and CVE-2009-3867) accounted for 85 per cent of all Java exploits detected in the second half of 2010. Operating system exploits, which have declined over recent months, increased significantly in Q3 2010, primarily because of exploitation of two Windows vulnerabilities, Redmond's security watcher notes.
The period also saw an enormous increase of 1,200 per cent in phishing using social networking as the lure, as social networks become lucrative hotbeds for criminal activity. Phishing using social networking as a lure increased from a low of 8.3 per cent of all phishing attacks in January to a high of 84.5 per cent in December 2010.
In addition, the Security Intelligence Report also charts a big rise in adware-based attacks. Two new strains of adware, JS/Pornpop and Win32/ClickPotato, were major contributors to this increase. Both strains of malware generate pop-ups on infected machines. In the case of Pornpop these pop-ups advertise smut sites.

Willysy Malware Infects More than 6 Million WeSites

 
In less than two weeks, a malware injection that targets e-commerce Web pages has ballooned from 90,000 infected pages to more than 6 million. Malware willysy The malware, called willysy, exploits a vulnerability in a popular online merchant platform, osCommerce, according to Web application security provider Armorize, of San Francisco.
When the company initially reported the injection on July 24, it found 90,000 infected pages. When it took another look at the malware on August 3, it found the injection had spread to some 6.3 million pages.

Although the identity of the perpetrators of the attacks by the malware could not be identified by Armorize, the company did trace the forays to eight IP addresses, all located in the Ukraine.
Armorize explainedthat the attacks exploit three known vulnerabilities in version 2.2 of osCommerce. The exploits allow the attackers to place an invisible frame (iFrame) on the page and then inject malicious code (JavaScript) into the page, where it will infect visitors to the online store.
Once the infection makes it to shopper's computer, it targets vulnerabilities in Java, Adobe Reader, Windows Help Center and Internet Explorer. Although the flaws in those programs targeted by the infection are known and have been patched, the attackers are betting that the user hasn't patched all the programs.
Even the exploitation of osCommerce itself depends on lax patch management by the shopping site, since the holes in the program used by the attackers were patched in version 2.3 of the software released in November of last year. Since that time, two versions of the offering have been released, 2.3.1 and 3.0.1.

According to osCommerce, the open source software is used by some 249,000 store owners, developers, service providers and enthusiasts.
Attacks like the one discovered by Armorize can be especially harmful to small and medium-size businesses (SMB), asserts Frank Kenney, a former Gartner analyst and vice president of Global Strategy at Ipswitch, a file transfer security company in Lexington. Malware willysyWillysy's progress Those companies typically don't have the financial resources of larger firms so they're attracted to open source programs like osCommerce and use off-the-shelf software in their operations. "Whenever you use off-the-shelf software, you have to understand there are data issues and all types of security vulnerabilities that exist," he told
While the makers of off-the-shelf software patch their programs often, he continued, the business still has to invest in the resources to insure that proper patch work is done. "That requires an outlay of capital that SMBs are not willing to deal with or don't have within their margins," he says.
Such lack of diligence can hurt a business in the long run, because security breaches can invite scrutiny from credit card companies, he explained. A credit card company may refuse to allow the business to use its services until it shows a certain level of security compliance that is out of the reach of the business from a financial or time and resource point of view.
That would have dire consequences for an SMB, he maintains. "The ability to process cards is the difference between a small business or a chain of mom-and-pop stores being open today and being closed tomorrow," he says.

The mysql.com website is injected with a script that generates an iFrame that redirects the visitors to http://truruhfhqnviaosdpruejeslsuy.cx.cc/main.php, where the BlackHole exploit pack is hosted.
