Dating Site eHarmony Hacked, 1.6 Million Password Stolen

After LinkedIn now cyber criminals targeted one of the famous dating site eHarmony and stolen more than 1.6 millions of passwords from the database. The authority has admitted that its password database has been compromised, with around 1.5 million hashed passwords being found in the wild. The leaked database that appeared in public contained unsalted MD5 hashed passwords and was reported to not contain any identifying user-names or email addresses. According to the sources all the password hashes has been randomly submitted to some underground hacker's forum where a user asked for help in cracking the hashes. This help was collectively given by the forum members who were then reportedly given the LinkedIn hashed passwords to work on. After the primary investigation eHarmony confirmed that a small fraction of user database has been affected. And affected members password has already been reset. eHarmony did not give any details of how the passwords were leaked and says they will continuing to investigate what happened.

Star Wars Galaxies Fan Site Hacked (21,000 Email-id & 23,000 Passwords Stolen)


A Star Wars Galaxies fan site got hacked today and thieves stole 21,000 email addresses and 23,000 passwords. And judging from an analysis of the passwords, most of them were weak. The site SWGalaxies.net is a fan site owned by LFNetwork, an independently owned network of LucasArts fan sites. Hackers from the group ObSec, a small hacking collective with apparent sympathies for the LulzSec and AntiSec hacktivist groups, broke into the site’s security and posted the addresses and passwords on the web. While a compromised forum login isn’t itself a big deal, the threat from this kind of smaller breach is that it can lead to further identity theft that could be devastating for individuals — particularly if they’re reusing the same passwords at other, more critical websites.
Jeff Moeller, editor of LFNetwork, said that the site that got hacked is not actively maintained any more. The fan site targets males 18 to 34 years old, and evidently none of the other UGO or IGN sites were targeted.

According to the identifier Report:-

“It’s unfortunate,” said Todd Feinman, chief executive of Identity Finder, in an interview. “It must be so frustrating for someone to see their passwords online, given the amount of online sign-ups we have to do.”

Of the 23,389 passwords stolen, 71 percent were weak. Only 13 percent of the passwords were strong. The average password length was 7.6 characters. About 4.3 percent of the passwords were less than 5 characters, and only 4.7 percent of the passwords were more than 10 characters long.
Hacking a game web site password isn’t too big a deal. But the problem is that users often reuse their passwords on more important sites, like online banks. Studies show that 50 percent of passwords are reused.
Feinman said, “Passwords are a digital identity and password reuse is a serious problem that could lead toward identity fraud.”
One of the users had a password that was 42 characters long. That person took trouble to protect himself or herself. But since the web site stored the passwords in an unencrypted format, the password is out there for everyone to see now.

Sony disables PSN web login system after new exploit is discovered



Sony just can’t seem to stave off negative headlines these days.  Just 5 days after PSN services started to be restored throughout the world another nasty exploit has been uncovered allowing hackers to change your PSN account password.  The exploit was discovered by Nylevia last night and confirmed quickly by NeoGAF.
It was found that the web based password reset system on sites like Playstation.com and Qriocity.com will allow someone to change any account password if they know two simple pieces of information; the email address associated with the account, and the date of birth of the account holder, you know, the information that was stolen in late April when hackers first breached the PSN.  On the plus side you’ll get an email informing you that your password was reset.
Sony responded to these reports by taking down all PSN web based login systems.  Right now Sony has given no estimated time for this issue to be fixed.  The only thing Sony is saying is that PSN services won’t be impacted by this downtime.

“Unfortunately this also means that those who are still trying to change their password via Playstation.com or Qriocity.com will be unable to do so for the time being,” said Sony. “This is due to essential maintenance and at present it is unclear how long this will take. In the meantime you will still be able to sign into PSN via your PlayStation 3 and PSP devices to connect to game services and view Trophy/Friends information.”


While it is positive that these troubles won’t impact PSN services it is uncomfortable, to say the least, that Sony is continuing to have issues with their online security.  This has gotten so bad that Nylevia is recommending to maintain a separate email address specifically for use with PlayStation services.  The very idea of maintaining an email address for one account is absurd but it really seems necessary at this point.
This new issue has effectively killed much of the positive momentum Sony has been building since they started bringing PSN services back online last week.  With the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) only a few weeks away, Sony is putting themselves in the position where much of their press conference during the event will have to address these various security issues.  Sony is effectively going into one of the largest industry events of the year in damage control mode instead of creating consumer excitement for future products and games.
Hopefully Sony can address security concerns and strengthen all parts of their network against future attacks. Despite their efforts to improve overall network security they are one company who many will never again trust with their personal and credit card information.

6.5 Million of LinkedIn Passwords Stolen By Cyber Criminals

Very popular social networking site LinkedIn are currently running through a massive cyber attacks. It has been allegedly reported that more than six million passwords belonging to LinkedIn users have been compromised among them more than 300,000 passwords has already been cracked and published as plain text. A file containing 6,458,020 SHA-1 unsalted password hashes has been posted on the internet, and hackers are working together to crack them.  
LinkedIn has confirmed that it is investigating the incident. In the meantime, several reputable sources have said that they have found their LinkedIn passwords in that list; it can therefore be assumed that the social network's operator actually does have a problem.
Pages are already appearing on the internet that prompt you to enter your password to verify whether you are affected; these are phishing sites. It is also expected that there will be waves of spam email soon which will call for you to change your password with a link to a LinkedIn-impersonating phishing site. Instead of following these links, either enter the LinkedIn URL yourself (linkedin.com) or use a stored bookmark to visit the social network and change your password.

Twitter Account of Thailand Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra Hacked


Police in Thailand are searching for an anonymous hacker after the Twitter account of prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra apparently was hacked.
The account @PouYingluck was compromised early on Sunday morning and eight false tweets were posted criticising Yingluck's leadership of the country.
Once the incident was realised Twitter temporarily suspended the account, which has close to 400,000 followers. As of the time of writing the account remains unavailable.

The hacker's final tweet was:-
"If she can't even protect her own Twitter account, how can she protect the country?"

Yingluck said that the hack was a violation of people's personal rights. She added that she would be taking a break from Twitter for an undetermined period.
According to Anudith Nakornthap, the Thai minister for information, communication and technology, Yingluck's Twitter account was compromised after the hacker first gained access to her email, changing her Twitter password with the password reset feature.
This suggests that she was not using the same password for both services, a common reason for Twitter hijackings, but it suggests that the password she used for her email account was not secure enough.
The Thai police are following several clues that might result in an arrest.

Hackers use blind SQL injection attack to crack Oracle-Sun, MySQL.com

The hackers used a blind SQL injection attack to hack into the website and disclosed details of the breach on The Full Disclosure Mailing List. The two hackers said they breached various databases discovering the password hashes for various usernames associated with the website.
Oracle Corp., which acquired Sun Microsystems in 2009 and included the newly acquired MySQL database division, has not acknowledged the breach. Website vulnerabilities that can be used in a SQL injection attack are common on websites. The vulnerabilities enable attackers to perform a database query to request some action to be performed on a database. If the database returns an error, savvy hackers can use the information to gain wider access to the server containing the underlying website data.
In the data shared by the hackers, some of the password hashes were cracked to reveal complete login details for accounts associated with mySQL.com, including the WordPress account login details for Robin Schumacher, the former director of product management, and Kaj Arnö, former vice president of community relations.
Some of the passwords revealed simple phrases. Schumacher set his password as a simple 4-digit number—with three repeating digits. The hackers also posted several other database tables without the password hashes.
Information relating to Sun.com was also posted. The data consists of a series of columns, tables and databases derived from an SQL injection into Sun's websites. This dump is seemingly devoid of passwords, but it does reveal several company email addresses.
While embarrassing, the flaw is not in the MySQL database management system software, but rather is a website coding vulnerability, said Chester Wisniewski, a senior security advisor, writing in the Sophos blog, Naked Security. Wisniewski said the MySQL website is also subject to ancross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability that was announced in January 2011 and has yet to be remedied. "Auditing your websites for SQL injection is an essential practice, as well as using secure passwords," Wisniewski wrote. "Either can lead you down a road that ends in tears."

Yet again the famous micro blogging site Twitter faced security challenge. Tuesday a huge number of Twitter users across the globe received  emails warning that their account may have been compromised and their passwords had been reset as a precautionary measure to prevent unauthorized access. In the e-mail, the microblogging company noted: "Twitter believes that your account may have been compromised by a Web site or service not associated with Twitter. We've reset your password to prevent others from accessing your account."

It remains unclear how many have been affected by the password reset e-mail or what's caused the mass e-mailing of its users. A post by TweetSmarter on Wednesday noted that in some cases when "large numbers of Twitter accounts have been hijacked," the company sends out these e-mails en masse, even sending messages to accounts that may not have been affected by any hack or hijack to err on the side of caution. The emails are apparently legitimate, though they were sent to more than victims of compromised accounts. The mass email coincided with incidents involving several high-profile accounts, including at least one account belonging to the BBC. Other media organisations, such as the TechCrunch blog, reported being warned. 
"We’re committed to keeping Twitter a safe and open community," reads a notice the company issued earlier Thursday. "As part of that commitment, in instances when we believe an account may have been compromised, we reset the password and send an email letting the account owner know this has happened along with information about creating a new password. This is a routine part of our processes to protect our users. "In this case, we unintentionally reset passwords of a larger number of accounts, beyond those that we believed to have been compromised. We apologize for any inconvenience or confusion this may have caused."
Twitter officials have not disclosed how many uncompromised accounts had passwords reset, nor any more on the attack that led to those actions. The social media site currently has 140 million active usersSome victims reported having select tweets deleted, while others started sending out spam.

formspring.me widely known as Formspring  is the latest in the seemingly unending list of websites to have suffered a security breach. More than 420,000 passwords for Formspring accounts have fallen into the wrong hands and posted publically to the internet. The incident brings back memories of the password leaks at popular sites such as LinkedIn and eHarmony about a month ago. A blog entry posted by Formspring's CEO and founder Ade Olonoh explains that the passwords of all 28 million users have been disabled after all, only 420,000 have been posted on the net.

According to the firm, usernames and other identifying information were not published alongside the stolen password hashes. Furthermore, in a positive sign, users were told that the SHA-256 hashed passwords were salted - and that Formspring is now tightening security further by introducing stronger bcrypt cryptographic hashes. Formspring also says that it has identified the security hole that allowed a hacker to breach its systems:
"Once we were able to verify that the hashes were obtained from Formspring, we locked down our systems and began an investigation to determine the nature of the breach. We found that someone had broken into one of our development servers and was able to use that access to extract account information from a production database."
After being informed of this discovery, the operators of the platform soon managed to trace the leak to one of their development servers which had allowed an attacker to access a production server and said that they successfully closed it. Formspring has also reset all user passwords. As per latest information, Formspring appears to have dealt with the security breach quickly and fairly transparently.
Basiacally Formspring is a social Q&A website, launched in November 2009. The site allows its users to set up a profile page, follow other users and ask questions from other users. The questions and their given responses are then published on the user's profile page. It is operated by Formspring.me, Inc. a company headquartered in San Francisco.

Security experts have revealed that the Seagate BlackArmor network attached storage device (NAS server) contains a static administrator password reset vulnerability by anyone with access to it and a particular URL. The BlackArmor range of network-attached storage devices is aimed at small businesses and offers storage and backup options from Windows PCs and Mac OS X systems, ranging from 1TB to 12TB of hard disk media. According to an exclusive report of US-CERT A remote unauthenticated attacker with access to the device's management web server can directly access the webpage, http://DevicesIpAddress/d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e.php and reset the administrator password. 
Seagate has been notified, but no fix has yet been made available. Also there is no current solution to the problem and US-CERT are only advising that network access to BlackArmor devices' web interface should be restricted. For additional information click here.

BBB urges caution on wi-fi networks


Protecting your identity is important, and many consumers don’t realize the dangers that come with using a Wi-Fi connection that is not their own.

According to a recent poll conducted by Wakefield Research and Wi-Fi Alliance, 32 percent of respondents said they have tried to get on a Wi-Fi network that was not their own, a startling 18 percent more than a December 2008 poll.

The Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota (BBB), along with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), urges consumers to think ahead before surfing the Web on a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Wi-Fi hotpots like coffee shops, libraries, airports, hotels and universities are all breeding grounds for hackers. According to the FTC, new hacking tools — which are available for free online — make hacking easy, even for users with limited technical know-how.

In order to confirm that an Internet connection is secure, the BBB advises consumers to follow the FTC’s top Wi-Fi tips:

• Make sure the connection is protected by a unique password. If a Wi-Fi hotspot doesn’t ask for a password, the Internet connection is not secure.

• Transmitted information should be encrypted. When sending personal information like addresses, credit card numbers and Social Security numbers over the Internet, make sure the website is fully encrypted and the network is secure. Look for https (the “s” stands for secure) at the beginning of the URL address to confirm its security.

• Don’t stay permanently logged in to wireless hotspots. Never leave your Internet connection running while your computer is unattended and make sure to log off after every use.

• Change your passwords frequently. When creating new accounts, make sure you use different passwords. Do not use the same password for different sites. If one password is hacked, the chances of other accounts being hacked becomes greater with repeated passwords.
