Vulnerability in Apple MacBooks Which Could ruin Batteries


One prominent security researcher has discovered a vulnerability in the batteries of Apple's MacBook line of portable computers that could allow hackers to ruin the batteries or install malware on them that could corrupt a Mac.
Charlie Miller, a renowned white-hat hacker who works for security firm Accuvant, plans to reveal and offer a fix next month for a MacBook battery vulnerability he has discovered, Forbes reports. Miller uncovered default passwords, which are used to access the microcontroller in Apple's batteries, within a firmware update from 2009 and used them to gain access to the firmware.

Apple and other laptop makers use embedded chips in their lithium ion laptop batteries to monitor its power level, stop and start charging and regulate heat.
During the course of his tests, the researcher "bricked" seven batteries, rendering them unusable by rewriting the firmware. Of more concern is the possibility that hackers could use the vulnerability to install difficult to remove malware, or, in a worst case scenario, cause the batteries to explode.

“These batteries just aren’t designed with the idea that people will mess with them,” he said. “What I’m showing is that it’s possible to use them to do something really bad.” According to him, IT few administrators would think to check the battery, providing hackers with an opportunity to hide malicious software on a battery that could repeatedly implant itself on a computer.

Miller admitted that he hasn't tried to blow up any batteries, but he did say it might be possible. "You read stories about batteries in electronic devices that blow up without any interference,” he noted. “If you have all this control, you can probably do it.”
another researcher, Barnaby Jack, who works for antivirus software maker McAfee, also looked into the battery issue a couple years ago, but said he didn't get as far as Miller did.

Miller, who is a regular winner of security contests demonstrating Mac, Safari and iPhone exploits, has notified Apple and Texas Instruments of the issue. Despite requests from several other researchers not to proceed, he plans to unveil the vulnerability, along with a fix he calls "Caulkgun," at the Black Hat security conference next month.
"Caulk Gun" will change a battery's default passwords to a random string of characters. While the fix will prevent hackers from breaking into the battery, it would also block any future firmware updates from Apple.

In spite of the battery vulnerability that he uncovered, Miller believes Mac OS X security is better than ever before. According to him, Apple engineers made few security-related changes in the jump from Leopard to Snow Leopard, but they made substantial improvements in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, which was released on Wednesday.
"Now, they've made significant changes and it's going to be harder to exploit,” he said, as noted by The Register.
“It's a significant improvement, and the best way that I've described the level of security in Lion is that it's Windows 7, plus, plus,” said noted security consultant Dino Dai Zovi.
Apple offered security researchers, including Miller and Dai Zovi, an unprecedented early look at Lion in order to get their feedback.
According to researchers, Lion's biggest security improvement is Lion's support for Address Space Layout Randomization. ASLR randomizes the location of critical system components to reduce the risk of attack. Apple also added sandboxing security measures in Safari that will isolate potential bugs or malware. Finally, the newly revamped File Vault now allows an entire drive to be encrypted.

Microsoft Security Advisory (2794220) Remote Code Execution Vulnerability in Internet Explorer Fixed

The Redmond based software giant Microsoft issued an urgent security advisory to address vulnerabilities in its popular web-browser that is Internet Explorer.  Few of days new “zero day” security hole in IE was discovered which could potentially allow hackers to take over control of your system when all you've done is visit an infected website. The vulnerability affects IE versions 6, 7 and 8. Though the latest versions of the browser, that means IE 9 and 10, are not affected. “An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the current user.” Microsoft said in its statement. The statement went on to say, “an attacker could host a website that contains a webpage that is used to exploit this vulnerability. In addition, compromised websites and websites that accept or host user-provided content or advertisements could contain specially crafted content that could exploit this vulnerability.”
On its advisory Microsoft first issued warning of the problem, which involves how IE accesses "an object in memory that has been deleted or has not been properly allocated." The problem corrupts the browser's memory, allowing attackers to execute their own code. Security vendor Symantec described such a scenario as a "watering hole" attack, where victims are profiled and then lured to the malicious site. Last week, one of the websites discovered to have been rigged to delivered an attack was that of the Council on Foreign Relations, a renowned foreign policy think tank.

iTunes Store Vulnerability Exposed, later Apple fixed that



Apple's iTunes Store had a vulnerability that accepted incorrect passwords from America Online (AOL) users, that could have been exploited by hackers.
Security researcher Joshua Long said he discovered the vulnerability more than six months ago but kept silent until Apple could fix the flaw."Apple recently worked with AOL to fix a vulnerability that has been discovered in the iTunes Store authentication process ... This vulnerability seemed to be a problem in the way Apple integrated AOL user names and passwords into its services," he said in his blog.Before the vulnerability was fixed, he said Apple would accept incorrect passwords from users logging into the store using an AOL Screen Name. Incomplete passwords, passwords with incorrect letter case, passwords with incorrect or extra characters at the end, or a combination of any or all of these, were accepted by Apple. "Knowledge of this vulnerability could potentially have been used by attackers, leading to disclosure of personally identifiable information, identity theft, and fraudulent purchases," he said.Long said the vulnerability took the whole six-month disclosure time limit to be announced.He said Apple was at first unresponsive to the problem and then when it did respond, it was initially unable to reproduce it. "When I discovered this security vulnerability last year, I felt that it was serious enough to warrant submitting it to a responsible third-party vulnerability management organization rather than only to Apple or AOL. I have submitted reports to both companies in the past, and I have found that sometimes it can take them a very long time to respond to a security issue," Long said.He noted that up to now, AOL "still doesn't seem to care about encrypting its Web-based e-mail service, in spite of Firesheep shining a spotlight on the problem last year.""I hoped that bringing in a third party to work with the vendor would help encourage the vendor to take the issue seriously and fix it more quickly," he said.He eventually asked upSploit to help inform the affected parties about the vulnerability and the date on which it will be disclosed to the public. "I believe that upSploit's persistence was a major factor in motivating the vendor to take action and to resolve the issue," he said.

Microsoft Releases Patch Fixes for Windows Server and PowerPoint


Microsoft fixed bugs in the WINS name server resolution protocol and a file format vulnerability in PowerPoint for its May Patch Tuesday.

 Microsoft addressed two security bulletins in May’s Patch Tuesday release. Security experts said administrators should apply the fixes immediately—because, despite their small size, they address significant threats.

Microsoft fixed a critical vulnerability affecting Windows Server and an important bug in Microsoft Office PowerPoint, according to the Patch Tuesday advisory released May 10. Microsoft also assigned separate “exploitability” scores for newer versions of the software under the “improved” exploitability index ratings.
The team fixed a critical vulnerability (MS11-035) in the WINS component in Windows Server 2003 and 2008. WINS is a name-resolution service that resolves names in the NetBIOS namespace and does not require authentication to use. While usually not available by default in Windows Server, it is commonly used in the enterprise for internal network servers. Administrators who have enabled WINS in Windows Server should apply the patch immediately as attackers could remotely cause a denial of service, according to Wolfgang Kandek, the CTO of Qualys.
“What might make the WINS vulnerability appealing to attackers is that it is a server-side issue,” Joshua Talbot, security intelligence manager, Symantec Security Response, told eWEEK.
Unlike other threats, attackers don’t have to trick a user into doing anything since it’s just a matter of finding a vulnerable server and feeding the machine “a malicious string of data,” according to Talbot. It is also a more serious issue on Windows Server 2003 than on 2008 because Windows Server 2008 has built-in protections such as DEP (Data Execution Prevention) and ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization). However, attackers can still create exploit code to get past those security features, Talbot said.
The other “important” bulletin (MS11-036) addressed a security flaw in all versions of Microsoft Office Power Point except Office 2010. The bug would allow attackers to take full control of the target machine as soon as the user opens a malicious PPT file.
Both WINS and PowerPoint vulnerabilities are fairly significant, according to Tyler Reguly, technical manager of security research and development at nCircle. File-format vulnerabilities are “popular exploits” but WINS is remote code execution, so it was “difficult” to decide which was the “biggest risk today.”
Microsoft listed both vulnerabilities using the new exploitability ratings. The PowerPoint bulletin was rated a “1” for a consistent exploit code likely for older software releases, but 0 for latest software because Office 2010 is not affected. The WINS patch was rated a “2” on both the latest and older versions because it affected all versions.
The updated rating system is intended to make it easier for IT administrators to determine their risk level, according to Microsoft.
“With massive updates such as we had in April, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Microsoft’s new index simplifies the process, which will help IT administrators to prioritize which patches they tackle first,” said Dave Marcus, director of security research and communications at McAfee Labs.
The small release means administrators should “brace themselves for a larger update” in June, according to Kandek.
To complicate things for IT administrators, a fake Patch Tuesday update is making the rounds, according to security researchers at Websense Security Labs ThreatSeeker network. The malware is spread via a link inside an email message supposedly from “Microsoft Canada Co.” which informs users that Microsoft has issued a “Security Update for Microsoft Windows OS,” wrote Amon Sanniez, associate security researcher at Websense. Clicking on the link downloads the fake patch to the computer and infects the system with a Zeus Trojan variant, according to Sanniez.
It “ties in almost perfectly” with the real Patch Tuesday updates from Microsoft, Sanniez said.
The email looks quite legitimate and shows “some effort” went into the creation, as the message is presented in both English and French, and the display names within the headers actually say the mail originated from Microsoft Canada.
The malicious executable is currently not being detected by most major antivirus products tracked on VirusTotal, so IT managers should be careful that none of their staff members or users click on the link to get the security update. Websense said it is a low-volume threat, possibly aimed at a handful of companies.

portals. It provides a secure, manageable environment for accessing
and interacting with enterprise software services and information

III. DESCRIPTION

Has been detected a reflected XSS vulnerability in Oracle Application
Server, that allows the execution of arbitrary HTML/script code to be
executed in the context of the victim user's browser.

The code injection is done through the DAD name. A DAD (Database
Access Descriptor) is a set of values that specifies how a database
server should fulfill a HTTP request.

Oracle Issued Security Update of DDoS Vulnerability in Apache HTTPD



Oracle, the giant enterprise database company - and, of course, owner of the erstwhile Sun Microsystems - has just published an out-of-band security update. This is only the fifth time Oracle has issued an alert outside its routine quarterly patch cycle since introducing its own version of Patch Tuesday at the start of 2005.

Description:-
This security alert addresses the security issue CVE-2011-3192, a denial of service vulnerability in Apache HTTPD, which is applicable to Oracle HTTP Server products based on Apache 2.0 or 2.2. This vulnerability may be remotely exploitable without authentication, i.e. it may be exploited over a network without the need for a username and password. A remote user can exploit this vulnerability to impact the availability of un-patched systems.

Affected Products and Versions:-

  • Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g Release 1, versions 11.1.1.3.0, 11.1.1.4.0, 11.1.1.5.0
  • Oracle Application Server 10g Release 3, version 10.1.3.5.0 (Only affected when Oracle HTTP Server 10g based on Apache 2.0 has been installed from Application Server Companion CD)
  • Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2, version 10.1.2.3.0 (Only affected when Oracle HTTP Server 10g based on Apache 2.0 has been installed from Application Server Companion CD)


Please note that Oracle Enterprise Manager includes the Oracle Fusion Middleware component that is affected by this vulnerability. Oracle Enterprise Manager is affected only if the affected Oracle Fusion Middleware version (noted above) is being used. Since a vulnerability affecting Oracle Fusion Middleware versions may affect Oracle Enterprise Manager, Oracle recommends that customers apply the fix for this vulnerability to the Oracle Fusion Middleware component of Oracle Enterprise Manager. BlackBerry 6 WebKit Vulnerability Patched, RIM Publishes Full Security Advisory


This latest security advisory goes to show why RIM’s current model for carrier approved OS updates is not ideal. RIM put out what they call a security notice about a BlackBerry 6 WebKit browser vulnerability back in March of this year for an exploit found in the BlackBerry 6 Browser at Pwn2Own that month. RIM said back then that devices updated to OS 6.0.0.526+ were safe from the vulnerability. They then finally issued a security advisory this week for the same old vulnerability with quite a few more details about it. The reason RIM took so long to release the advisory was because RIM had to wait for carriers to approve the security software update. RIM provided the fix within two weeks of learning of the vulnerability. Now SIX MONTHS LATER RIM has found that “a sufficient number of wireless services providers” have made the update available to their customers.
Overview:-
This security advisory addresses three specific vulnerabilities affecting the implementation of open source WebKit technology in the BlackBerry Browser in BlackBerry 6. Successful exploitation of the vulnerabilities requires the BlackBerry smartphone user to browse to a website that the attacker has maliciously designed. A successful attack could result in remote code execution (RCE) on a smartphone running BlackBerry 6. An attacker exploiting these vulnerabilities could read or write to the built-in media storage section of a BlackBerry smartphone or to the media card but could not access user data that the email, calendar, and contact applications store in the application storage (the internal file system that stores application data and user data) of the BlackBerry smartphone.
The most severe of the three vulnerabilities has a CVSS score of 6.8. The least severe has a CVSS score of 5.0. At this time there is no evidence of the vulnerabilities being used in attacks against the BlackBerry platform, and RIM is not aware of any impact to BlackBerry customers as a result of these vulnerabilities. 
Note:- KB26132 was previously published as a Security Notice to responsibly advise customers about the existence of one of the three vulnerabilities, which had been publicly disclosed, and provide workaround options in lieu of a software update to address that issue for all affected customers. This Security Advisory replaces that Security Notice and provides full details of publicly available software updates that address that issue and two related issues, and urges affected customers to upgrade.

Google engineers deny Chrome hack exploited browser's code

Instead, those engineers said the bug Vupen exploited to hack Chrome was in Adobe's Flash, which Google has bundled with the browser for over a year.
Google's official position, however, has not changed since Monday, when Vupen announced it had successfully hacked Chrome by sidestepping not only the browser's built-in "sandbox" but also by evading Windows 7's integrated anti-exploit technologies.
"The investigation is ongoing because Vupen is not sharing any details with us," a Google spokesman said today via email.
But others who work for Google were certain that at least one of the flaws Vupen exploited was in Flash's code, not Chrome's.
"As usual, security journalists don't bother to fact check," said Tavis Ormandy, a Google security engineer, in atweet earlier today . "Vupen misunderstood how sandboxing worked in Chrome, and only had a Flash bug."
"It's a legit pwn, but if it requires Flash, it's not a Chrome pwn," tweeted Chris Evans, a Google security engineer and Chrome team lead, using the security-speak term for compromising an application or computer.
Justin Schuh, whose LinkedIn account also identifies him as a Google security engineer, chimed in with , "No one is saying it's not a legit exploit. The point is that it's not the exploit [Vupen] claimed."
When asked to confirm the source of the vulnerabilities it exploited, Vupen was blunt in its refusal to share any information.
"We will not help Google in finding the vulnerabilities," said Chaouki Bekrar, Vupen's CEO and head of research, in an email reply to questions. "Nobody knows how we bypassed Google Chrome's sandbox except us and our customers, and any claim is a pure speculation."
Last year, Vupen changed its vulnerability disclosure policies when it announced it would no longer report bugs to vendors -- as do many researchers -- but instead would reveal its work only to paying customers.
Today's Twitter back-and-forth between Google's engineers and Bekrar grew heated at times.
"When it comes to critical vulnerabilities, all software vendors/devs (including Google) always try to downplay the findings," Bekrar said on Twitter .
"I was thinking something similar about researchers who inflate their accomplishments," Schuh replied , also on Twitter, to Bekrar.
The point made by Ormandy, Evans and Schuh was that Vupen didn't exploit a bug in Chrome's own code, but in Flash, which has been partially sandboxed in the stable version of the browser since early March 2011 .
While the Google engineers seemed to acknowledge that a bug in Flash was involved in Vupen's exploit, they also defended the sandbox technology -- meant to isolate Flash from the rest of the computer -- even as it apparently failed to prevent an attack.
"The Flash sandbox blog post went to pains to call it an initial step," said Evans. "It protects some stuff, more to come. Flash sandbox [does not equal] Chrome sandbox."
The blog Evans referred to was published in December 2010 , where Schuh and another Google developer, Carlos Pizano said, "While we've laid a tremendous amount of groundwork in this initial sandbox, there's still more work to be done."
Chrome's Flash sandbox is currently available only in the Windows version of the browser; Google has promised to implement it in the Mac and Linux editions, but has not yet done so.
While Bekrar later hinted that Vupen's exploit did leverage a Flash vulnerability, he said the attack code also took advantage of at least one other bug. "[Chrome's] built-in plug-ins such as Flash are launched inside the sandbox which was created by Google, so finding and exploiting a Flash or a WebKit vulnerability will fall inside the sandboxes and will not circumvent it," he wrote. "A sandbox bypass exploit is still required."
Chrome has a reputation as a secure browser, in large part because of its sandbox technology. Chrome is the only browser to have escaped unscathed at the last three Pwn2Own hacking contests, the annual challenge hosted by the CanSecWest conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, and sponsored by HP TippingPoint's bug bounty program.
In March 2011, no one took on Chrome at Pwn2Own, even though Google had offered a $20,000 prize to the first researcher who hacked the browser and its sandbox.

Google Chrome OS Has Security Hole (Black Hat 2011)


Black Hat Google has billed its Chrome operating system as a security breakthrough that's largely immune to the threats that have plagued traditional computers for decades. With almost nothing stored on its hard drive and no native applications, there's no sensitive data that can pilfered and it can't be commandeered when attackers exploit common software vulnerabilities.
But according to two researchers who spent the past few months analyzing the Chrome-powered Cr-48 beta released in December, the browser-based OS is vulnerable to many of the same serious attacks that afflict people surfing websites. As a result, users remain susceptible to exploits that can intercept email, documents, and passwords stored on centralized servers, many of which are maintained by Google.
“Even though they put these awesome security protections in place, we're just moving the security problems to the cloud now,” Matt Johansen, a researcher with WhiteHat Security, told The Register. “We're moving the software security problem that we've been dealing with forever to the cloud. They're doing a lot of things right, but it's not the end all and be all for security.”
Virtually all of the threats identified by Johansen and his WhiteHat colleague Kyle Osborn stem from Chrome's reliance on extensions, which are essentially web-based applications. A fair number of the extensions they analyzed contain XSS, or cross-site scripting, bugs, which have the potential to inject malicious code and content into a visitor's browser and in some cases steal credentials used to authenticate user accounts.
As they went about testing what kind of attacks various XSS vulnerabilities could allow, Johansen and Osborn noticed something curious: a bug in one extension often allowed them to hijack the communications of a second extension, even when the latter one had no identifiable security flaws. At the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas on Wednesday, they demonstrated this weakness by exploiting an XSS hole in one extension to steal passwords from an otherwise secure account on cloud password storage service LastPass.
“If any of the other vulnerable extensions have an XSS hole, we can utilize JavaScript to hijack that communication,” Johansen said. “LastPass is doing absolutely nothing wrong here. You can have an extension that's perfectly fine, but if you have another that has a cross-site scripting error in it we can still access information in secure applications.”
The discovery has generated a quandary for the researchers.
“Whose problem is this to fix?” Johansen continued. “We don't really have an answer for that. LastPass did everything correctly. It's the other extension developers that developed an extension with a vulnerability in it.”
After being informed of the specific attack, LastPass made changes to its Chrome extension that prevented it from being carried out, so it's reasonable to assume extension makers foot some of the responsibility for preventing their apps from being compromised by others. But Johansen couldn't rule out the possibility that vulnerabilities and other apps could probably make LastPass vulnerable again. He said Google might be able to fix the problem by overhauling the application programming interfaces extension developers use.
The researchers also demonstrated an XSS vulnerability in Scratchpad, a text-editor extension that's bundled with Chrome. By sharing files with names containing JavaScript commands stored on Google Docs they were able to obtain the Google session cookies of anyone who used a Chromebook to view the documents. An attacker could exploit the vulnerability to read a victim's email, or to send instant messages to everyone on the victim's contact list. If any of the contacts are using Chromebooks, they could be similarly vulnerable to booby-trapped filenames stored on Google Docs.
A Google spokeswoman defended the security of Chromebooks and said the vulnerabilities enumerated by the researchers weren't unique to the cloud-based OS. In an email, she issued the following statement:
This conversation is about the web, not Chrome OS. Chromebooks raise security protections on computing hardware to new levels. They are also better equipped to handle the web attacks that can affect browsers on any computing device, thanks in part to a carefully designed extensions model and the advanced security available through Chrome that many users and experts have embraced.
The researchers stressed Google engineers were extremely quick to fix the Scratchpad vulnerability and awarded them a $1,000 bounty for their report. But they remain convinced that the security of Chrome OS in many cases is only as strong as its' weakest extensions. They also pointed out that penetration-testing tools such as the Browser Exploitation Framework could be used to help streamline attacks in much the way Metasploit is used to manage exploits for traditional machines.
And, Johansen said, Chrome hacking through XSS may be only the beginning, since the flaws are among the easiest to find and exploit.
“Who knows what we're going to be looking for months or years from now when Google can figure out a way to thwart the cross-site scripting threat,” he said. “Why would we be trying to write buffer overflows when we can just write a simple JavaScript command.”

Back in June of last year, Tavis Ormandy, a Google engineer in Switzerland, caused quite a stir. As Gregg Keizer reported at the time, Ormandy told Microsoft about a previously unknown security hole in Windows on June 5, and on June 9 he published a full description of the vulnerability, including proof-of-concept code, on the Full Disclosure mailing list.
Microsoft blew a corporate gasket. Mike Reavey, the director of the Microsoft Security Response Center, blogged the following day, "Public disclosure of the details of this vulnerability and how to exploit it, without giving us time to resolve the issue for our potentially affected customers, makes broad attacks more likely and puts customers at risk."
Omandy responded that he was acting on his own behalf, not as a Google employee, but Reavy didn't buy it. The relationship between Microsoft and Google turned from frosty to frigid.
Last week, Microsoft showed its mettle by publicly issuing a new policy and two new "Microsoft Vulnerability Research Advisories" -- a completely new breed of Microsoft malware-fighting animal.
The policy is a nine-page document saying, basically, that when Microsoft discovers a zero-day flaw in some other vendor's product, Microsoft will work with the vendor to fix the vulnerability -- and make sure it's fixed before telling the world: "If attacks are underway in the wild, and the vendor is still working on the update, then both the finder and vendor work together as closely as possible to provide early public vulnerability disclosure to protect customers."
There are exceptions to the private reporting restriction. The policy allows Microsoft to divulge details if the vulnerability becomes known to the public at large, when there's evidence that the vulnerability is being used, or when the vendor doesn't respond.
That last point has become a bone of contention with several security researchers who claim that Microsoft hasn't responded quickly enough -- or, indeed, hasn't responded at all -- to their reports of Microsoft vulnerabilities. To be fair, no one has yet determined precisely how long it takes for a lack of response to result in a vendor being classified as "unresponsive."
Microsoft accompanied the new procedure with two new MSVR advisories, dubbed MSVR11-001and MSVR11-002. It comes as no surprise that both of them describe previously undocumented security holes in Google products that had been patched by Google. (MSVR11-002 describes a problem in both Google Chrome and Opera.)
Neither vulnerability is particularly interesting. The first one, a buffer overflow, allows arbitrary code to run, but only in the confines of the Chrome sandbox. It was fixed in Chrome Version 6.0.472.59, which was released seven months ago. The second requires advance knowledge of a specific local IP address. It was fixed in Chrome 8.0.552.215, which was released four months ago. Apparently, Microsoft held onto both reports, pending final publication of their new policy.
If you or someone in your organization ever stumbles on a zero-day vulnerability in a software product, take a few minutes to look over Microsoft's policy. I won't get sucked into debating the virtues of Full Disclosure versus Coordinated Disclosure, but it would certainly be instructive to see how Microsoft says it would treat you and your organization if the shoe were on the other foot.

Zero-day vulnerabilities in Java, which was on the spotlight for last few days; takes a new direction. Several security firms have already declared that, this newly found Java exploit had been added to Blackhole, a popular hacker's tool that bundles numerous exploits and tries each in turn until it finds one that will work against a personal computer. As expected  Oracle has released an emergency update to address those zero-day vulnerabilities. This Security Alert addresses security issues CVE-2012-4681 (US-CERT Alert TA12-240A and Vulnerability Note VU#636312) and two other vulnerabilities affecting Java running in web browsers on desktops. These vulnerabilities are not applicable to Java running on servers or standalone Java desktop applications. They also do not affect Oracle server-based software.
These vulnerabilities may be remotely exploitable without authentication, i.e., they may be exploited over a network without the need for a username and password. To be successfully exploited, an unsuspecting user running an affected release in a browser will need to visit a malicious web page that leverages this vulnerability. Successful exploits can impact the availability, integrity, and confidentiality of the user's system.
In addition, this Security Alert includes a security-in-depth fix in the AWT subcomponent of the Java Runtime Environment.
Due to the severity of these vulnerabilities, the public disclosure of technical details and the reported exploitation of CVE-2012-4681 "in the wild," Oracle strongly recommends that customers apply the updates provided by this Security Alert as soon as possible.
