UbiSlate 7 Upgraded Version of Aakash Is Finally Ready To Sale

Earlier we have discussed about Aakash (World’s Cheapest Tablet). Now the countdown is over and the much awaited Aakash tablet is finally ready to sale. DataWind, the Canadian company that is manufacturing Aakash, has started the online booking and pre booking of the much anticipated low cost Android tablet. Online booking is for students' version of the tablet and pre booking is for UbiSlate 7, the upgraded version of Aakash.
Students' version of Aakash will be available for Rs 2,500 and will be delivered in seven days. The commercial version, UbiSlate 7 is priced at Rs 2,999. The payment mode for both the tablets is cash on delivery.
The commercial version of Aakash tablet will be powered by Android 2.3 and will have a resistive touchscreen, Cortex A8-700 MHz processor and graphics accelerator HD video processor, 256 MB of RAM and 2 GB of internal memory. Other specifications are a one standard USB port, 3.5 mm audio jack, a 7 inch display with 800 x 480 pixel resolution, resistive touchscreen, GPRS and WiFi support.

"The improved version of Aakash tablet will be available in retail outlets by January end," a spokesperson of DataWind told media. The tablet was to be made available in retail stores by the end of November. "The delay in the availability of the tablet has been due to upgradation in the tablet and some unforeseen delay in manufacturing," the spokesperson said.
To book and prebook student and commercial versions respectively of Aakash tablet, users have to visit DataWind's website and fill up the required form. In case of booking they will get a booking ID and a message which will state, "You will shortly receive an email confirmation from our support team with further details."
In case of pre booking users will get a confirmation message which will state, "The commercial version of the Akash UbiSlate 7 would be launched in early weeks of December. After the commercial launch we would get in touch with you to deliver your device as soon possible." As a matter of fact, the confirmation message a reader will see is factually incorrect as The mobile Indian had reported earlier the Aakash tablet will be available only by January end.
Datawind has however not cleared how it is going to establish the identity of students who will book the cheapest version of Aakash tablet. When The Mobile Indian contacted spokesperson of Datwind he said, "Anyone can book the student version of Aakash tablet."
This defeats the purpose of providing students an affordable tablet as now anyone can place an order to get the tablet. Interestingly, now it has been revealed that the government has procured only 10,000 Aakash tablets for distribution in schools and colleges of the initial 1 lakh proposed.

Microsoft is Expected Launch Tablet To Compete With iPad

Microsoft is Expected Launch Tablet To Compete With iPad

A Speculation is building that Microsoft is expected to introduce a tablet computer of its own design that runs a new version of its Windows operating system in an effort to compete with Apple's iPad. It is the first time in the company’s 37-year history that it will offer a computer of its own creation.
This would be a dramatic break from Microsoft's usual moves in computer hardware, where it develops the software and licenses that to hardware makers to ensure the broadest possible market. But Microsoft has fallen behind Apple and Google in the fast growing tablet market – already one-eighth as large as the PC market and forecast to be 40% by 2016. The fastest growth in tablet sales is in western countries, where PC sales are slowing, reducing sales in the Windows division in four of the past six quarters. Windows 8, to be released this year, is designed to be used on a tablet as well as a desktop PC.
Microsoft has invited the media to an event in Los Angeles Monday afternoon, where it is expected to show its tablet device. The entertainment industry Web site The Wrap earlier reported that Microsoft planned to announce a tablet at the event.
For Microsoft, making a tablet is a risky venture. Even with the emerging competition from the iPad, Windows remains one of the greatest franchises the technology industry has known, accounting for $4.6 billion in sales during the most recently reported quarter. Those sales are rooted in Microsoft’s alliance with its hardware partners. The plans could erode the commitment those partners have to Windows since Microsoft will effectively be competing with them for sales.

BlackBerry PlayBook The Most Secure Tablet For BYOD Solution

BlackBerry PlayBook The Most Secure Tablet For BYOD Solution

Now a days users of tablet is increasing everyday. Millions of people across the globe are using tablet for both personal and professional purposes. While the number of users and purposes of using tablet are rising, besides the matter of privacy and security arises. There are many companies who are manufacturing tablet, but before choosing, we should know which one is secured than others. According to a recent report by Context Information Security -the PlayBook of BlackBerry is the only device among three top tablets that gives users a good, safe division between their work and personal computing, a recent technology audit concluded.  The report faulted the PlayBook, as well as the Apple iPad and the Samsung Galaxy Tab, for default settings that don't automatically encrypt backups, and for not offering complementary and compatible tools for IT teams to manage a large number of devices at the business level. According to Jonathan Roach, Principal Consultant at Context and author of the report "While the iPad and BlackBerry PlayBook performed better, both still have security deficiencies -- including desktop software that fails to encrypt backups by default." He also said "Context found the PlayBook to be the most work-ready personal tablet of the three, due to its Bridge application's excellent support of barriers between work and personal profiles,"
According to report by contrast, Apple's wildly popular iPad sold more than 17 million units last quarter. Context found the iPad to be the second-most-secure device, citing its "robust data protection and damage limitation facilities," but said on its news page that the device was still vulnerable to jailbreak attacks and "ineffective disk encryption unless a strong passcode policy is applied."
The report also found the Galaxy Tab's security features to be the least work-play ready, with weak disk-encryption support. The Galaxy Tab's lack of tools tailored to enterprise use makes it "very difficult to manage more than a small number of Galaxy Tabs in an enterprise environment," a point Apple also falls short on. The report criticized the Galaxy Tab's encryption as well. Even with encryption enabled, the report found that Samsung's device still "allows badly-written apps to store sensitive information on the unencrypted SD card." The report also praised all three tablets for their support of Exchange ActiveSync, a feature that allows crucial security settings to be managed from a central server running Microsoft software. But the study noted important differences among the devices that may make some tablets more appropriate for dual use in both the home and the office.
"Despite that security advantage, RIM only managed to ship 130,000 tablets last quarter. By contrast, Apple's wildly popular iPad sold more than 17 million units last quarter. Context found the iPad to be the second-most-secure device, citing its 'robust data protection and damage limitation facilities,' but said on its news page that the device was still vulnerable to jailbreak attacks and 'ineffective disk encryption unless a strong passcode policy is applied" -Jonathan added

Microsoft Launching Surface With Windows 8 Pro in January Starting at $899 For 64GB & $999 For 128GB

Microsoft Launching Surface With Windows 8 Pro in January Starting at $899 For 64GB & $999 For 128GB

Near about five months ago Microsoft announced that they will introduce a tablet computer of its own design that runs a new version of its Windows operating system, and that tablet was named 'Surface'. After this announcement we got the long awaited Surface tablet based on Windows RT. Now the software giant announced that the next version of its tablet computer which will run on full version of Windows 8 Pro is ready for sale. in a blog post Microsoft confirmed that the device will start at $899 for the 64GB model, with the 128GB version setting you back $999. Both of those are what's Microsoft's dubbing the "standalone" model, which means you'll get a Surface pen/stylus, but have to shell out extra for a Touch or Type Cover (each over $100). Both will be available in January, although there's no specific date or word on pre-orders yet. The current Surface uses the slimmed down Windows RT operating system. As a result, it runs only specially designed applications from Microsoft and others sold through the company's online store. The Pro version of Surface will also run regular Windows applications written for desktops and laptops. "It's a full PC AND a tablet," Surface general manager Panos Panay wrote in a blog post Thursday.
Both Surface RT & Pro looks similar to the including the same "VaporMg" casing and built-in kickstand, and it also boasts a 10.6-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio. A key difference with that latter bit, though, is that the screen packs a full 1920 x 1080 resolution as opposed to the 1366 x 768 found on the RT model. You'll also get a third-gen Core i5 processor with Intel HD Graphics 4000 (no more specifics on that just yet), 4GB of RAM, a Mini DisplayPort that can output a 2560 x 1440 resolution, a full-size USB 3.0 port and, of course, Windows 8 Pro with support for all your traditional desktop applications. All that expectedly makes the tablet itself a bit heftier than its RT-based counterpart -- it's just over half-an-inch thick and weighs in at two pounds on the nose.
The spec list confirmed that the Surface Pro will have a 42 W-h battery, but Microsoft has now also expanded on that in a tweet, saying that the device is expected to "have approximately half the battery life of Surface with Windows RT." Based on our testing of the RT version, that should translate to just over four-and-a-half hours.

Aakash 2 “World’s Cheapest Tablet” Ready For Release With Many Handy Features

“Unlike other tablet devices, Aakash can also be used to create computer programs, in Python, C, C++ and Scilab,” - said Kapil Sibal, adding that the tablet can be further used for accessing e-governance services. The government has approved the specifications of the upgraded version of the tablets submitted by Datawind, to IIT-Bombay for testing. “The government has approved the specifications,” Datawind CEO Sunit Singh Tuli confirmed. The Aakash 2 sample devices are now being tested, with manufacturing projected to start by July or August. "The applications and the content on Aakash 2 are most important, not just the device." The new version of the Aakash tablet has an 800Mhz processing speed, a three-hour battery life and operates on the latest Android software. It also has an SD card slot, a USB port and works over wi-fi. It does not have 3G capability, however, so users need access to a good internet connection. Bombay IIT has developed new apps like interactive class quiz programme Clicker and Sci-lab, which allows students to conduct interactive classes. For detailed information about "Aakash" click here

Google I/O Kicks Off Tuesday: All Eyes On Android And New-Look Exec Team

Every major tech company in Silicon Valley takes at least one turn at San Francisco’s Moscone Center each year to show off their latest ideas and reinforce their standing among the community. This week, Google (NSDQ: GOOG) gets a shot, likely to highlight versions of its Android software for phones, tablets, and televisions while continuing to push a vision of computing with the Web at its center.
Google I/O has grown significantly since 2008, with the fourth incarnation set to kick off Tuesday. Nearly 5,500 attendees are expected to pony up for access to Google’s roster of engineers, who will present sessions on nearly everything Google, from search to Web application development to browsers to mobile applications. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect:
Android: Google’s most successful product outside of search, Android, will likely draw the most attention during the week. The smartphone version of Android has been a rousing success, but tablet versions have yet to create any serious alternative to Apple’s iPad. It would be surprising if Google didn’t address the tablet question in some detail, either through new operating system versions or applications.
Google TV: One version of Android that hasn’t really taken flight—Google TV—has been reported as worthy of an Google I/O slot. First introduced a year ago at this conference and launched last November, Google TV has faced opposition from the big network television companies and confusion among customers who encounter its remote controls. A preview of a next-generation version is expected, but enthusiasm for the concept in general is not strong leading into the show.
Chrome OS: Netbooks bearing Google’s browser-centric operating system were supposed to have been launched last year, but delays forced the project into a mid-2011 launch schedule. Now that it’s May 2011, presumably Google is ready to shed more light on exactly what types of Chrome OS netbooks will launch, and how much they will cost. It will also be interesting to see if Google talks up Chrome OS tablet-style devices, given that interest in the netbook has waned considerably since Chrome OS was first announced in 2009.
Web Standards: Google has used significant air time at the previous Google I/O conferences to urge adoption of HTML5 technologies as the pathway to a next-generation model of computing centered on the Web. This is still very much a work in progress. Expect Google to continue the evangelical call this week, with demonstrations of the types of sophisticated Web applications that are possible with HTML5 technologies.
Wild Cards: Some form of a Google music locker is inevitable, but has the company locked down enough of the details with the music industry for it to surface this week? Will Google Docs finally get offline access? Which Android tablet will Google give away to attendees, the Xoom or the Galaxy Tab?
Context: Google is a company that famously likes to celebrate its failures. That means Google I/O is probably its most celebratory week of each year, considering it has produced such notable failures as Google Wave and Google Friend Connect. As pointed out over the course of the weekend, Google doesn’t necessarily save some of its most winning ideas for Google I/O: Google Instant was announced at its own event last September, for example.
However, this is the first Google I/O with Larry Page back at the helm of the company, and therefore the first chance for him to really put his stamp on the show. Google has been furiously reorganizing its executive ranks in the weeks since Page has taken over, and this Google I/O may give hints as to the new pecking order at Google with respect to the types of projects demonstrated at the show, and the people chosen to pitch those projects to the world.
It’s a week in which all eyes will be on the company that dominates Web search, fumbles with social skills, and provides a defensible alternative to Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) in the mobile market. We’ll be at Google I/O both days, and will bring you highlights and analysis of Google’s week in the spotlight.

Latest Blackberry Play Book Software Update By RIM

RIM Offers Up Latest BlackBerry PlayBook Software Update [BlackBerry PlayBook Software Update 1.0.7.2942 Now Available, Brings Improved Wi-Fi Connectivity, Faster Bridge Pairing & More. It has been just over a months time since we saw the last update for the BlackBerry PlayBook and while this latest is not adding the one item people seem to be complaining about most — it is nice to see it arrive so quickly. Not to mention, this update does appear to have a few perks for those who are actually using and enjoying their PlayBook.
That being said, this latest update will bring your PlayBook up to version 1.0.7.2942. The update measures in at 80MB in size and the tablet does require a reboot after the update process has run its course. The update does not contain a bunch of new features, instead it takes care of a few bugs and also brings something called differential updates. In terms of the bug fixes, those deal with Wi-Fi connectivity and the BlackBerry Bridge.

The New Features You Will Get:-

  • Improved Wi-Fi connectivity to WEP networks
  • Faster pairing between a BlackBerry smartphone and BlackBerry
PlayBook tablet via the BlackBerry Bridge app, and faster attachment
opening via BlackBerry Bridge.
And now getting to the differential updates, this one is described as;

“The differential updates feature allows us to update only the sections of the BlackBerry Tablet OS that require updating. This should result in smaller download file sizes and therefore faster updating.”

All said and done, nothing major but enough that it should still be welcomed by regular users. Of course, given the last update was 1.0.7 and this one is 1.0.7.2942 I am not sure anyone could have really expected to see anything major included. Bottom line here, despite what many think about the PlayBook — it is sort of refreshing to see that RIM has not given up just yet. Especially considering what we recently watched HP do with the TouchPad. And in the end, I will maintain my previous statements in that while the PlayBook could use some software improvements and more apps — the hardware is super nice.

Microsoft's Windows 8 Will Be Available On October 26

Microsoft's Windows 8 Will Be Available On October 26

The final countdown of Windows 8 begins as software giant Microsoft announced that they will start selling Windows 8 from coming October 26, a little more than three months from now. This release will be first stable one of Windows 8, earlier we got three pre-release version of Windows 8 -Consumer Preview, Developer Preview & Release Preview. Windows 8 is Designed to work on both PCs and tablet computers, So far Windows 8 is Microsoft's best hope for competing with devices. According to official blog of Windows Steam - "Steven Sinofsky announced at Microsoft’s annual sales meeting that customers will be able to get Windows 8 – whether in upgrade fashion or on a new PC – starting on October 26thEarlier this month at the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference, Tami Reller told attendees Windows 8 would be available in October. But now everyone has a specific date to mark on their calendars."
The Oct. 26 date is also significant to users now running Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7, as it marks the debut of the $39.99 upgrade to Windows 8. The price is a dramatic discount from other Windows upgrade. All users who upgrade will receive Windows 8 Pro, the more advanced of the two retail editions. Microsoft has also tied the launch of its Windows RT operating system, and its first-ever tablet, dubbed "Surface" to the debut of Windows 8. It does have some wiggle room, however, for the tablet, because it has said that the device would go on sale around the time of Windows 8's release. Microsoft officials have not said how much the promised System Builder SKU will be for those who want to build their own PCs. They also have not said whether a full, non-upgrade version will be available via retail and how much it will cost.

Microsoft Desinged Windows 8 for Touch Screens

Microsoft is releasing their latest version of the Windows software – Windows 8 (or at least that is what it is being called until an official name is chosen). Designed around touch screens, the new operating system is hugely different than Windows systems of the past. On Wednesday Microsoft showed how it would work on both traditional PCs as well as the increasingly popular tablets.
Windows 8 Features:-

Windows 8 is designed to be used easily with or without a keyboard and mouse. It is clearly optimized for small devices like tablets with touch screen capabilities, though should work just as well for desktops and laptops.
Apps will be launched from the Start button – apps that are web-based and will be built for use on both tablet and PC versions. This could give Microsoft a big advantage over other platforms since users currently have to decide between using fun tablet apps and sticking with a PC where programs like Word are available.
Live tiles will be available on the desktop with updating information like a weather app, Facebook and email accounts. The tiles can be customized and expanded to fill the entire screen. And the full touch browser will have Internet Explorer 10 which has yet to be released as well.
One of the most interesting features of the new system is its ability to view two apps at the same time. By swiping in a new app while viewing another, users can snap it into place and there will be two side by side. Currently no other tablet operating system is able to do that.
Microsoft is rumored to have its own store where apps can be downloaded and will be included in the new Windows 8 system. Good news though, existing Windows apps will still work. They won’t be optimized for the touch screen, but a “fuzzy hit targeting” will be used to make them useable with finger taps.
A launch date is being discussed for 2012, but there isn’t anything more specific.

Amazon Will Try To Kill The iPad With Its Kindle Tablets

‘Coyote’ and ‘Hollywood’ are the code-names of two tablets rumored to be a part of Amazon’s
upcoming tablet ‘family’. Details obtained from one tipster reveal the Coyote will boast a dual-core processor much like Apple’s iPad 2, whereas the Hollywood has something even more audacious up its sleeve: hardware that Amazon hopes will potentially make the iPad 3 obsolete even before it launches.

The Coyote will be Amazon’s entry-level tablet in the Kindle family, and will based on the NVIDIA Tegra 2 platform. Nothing too spectacular there, then, but it’s the Hollywood that looks to be most interesting.
Based on the NVIDIA T30 “Kal-El,” the Hollywood boasts a quad-core processor that makes the dual-core Tegra 2 look like a senior stepping off the bus. With a 500% performance increase, the Hollywood wants to make the iPad 3 look silly even before Apple announces the third-generation device. Something tells us Apple’s got a quad-core A6 in the pipeline to cope, though.
Unfortunately, those are the only details Boy Genius Report’s source can provide for now, leaving much to be desired when it comes to details on screen sizes and other technical specs. For now, we’ll just have to wait, but what do you think? Will an Amazon tablet ever steal Apple’s crown?

A Linux-based mobile OS is set to launch in China, presenting a possible threat to competitors as they vie for smartphone and tablet customers in the Asian market.
Chinese ecommerce company Alibaba says it will launch its Aliyn OS at the end of the month, after working on it for three years. Phone manufacturer Tianyu intends to sell the Aliyn-based K-Touch Cloud-Smart Phone W700 for $416 in several days, with plans to market a tablet soon.
Aliyn's main features include the ability to run Android apps in the cloud, as well as those created with JavaScript and HTML5. It offers users cloud-based email, data, text message and photo storage too, besides regular web search and GPS.
"Introducing cloud apps to mobile devices not only brings a whole new user experience, but also greater ease for third-party mobile software developers who will be able to use Internet technology such as HTML5 and JavaScript to reduce the complexity in the app development process," said Wang Jian, president of Alibaba Cloud Computing.
In most regions of the world, Aliyn would face fierce and nearly devastating competition from Google's Android and Apple's iOS. But in China where Tianyu's new phone is set to launch, the OS may have a chance. The country's mobile broadband infrastructure is still underdeveloped and essentially up for grabs to whoever can create the biggest presence there first.
China is still behind in the smartphone market, though 3G subscriber numbers jumped nearly 50 percent to almost 70 million last April. But given the country's enormous population, 70 million is a small number compared to the U.S. market, in which nearly half of phone owners have smartphones.
If Aliyn can create a foothold in time, then, it may stand a chance against planned marketing onslaughts from rivals Apple, Google and Nokia, which are also angling for the Chinese market.
Apple's COO Tim Cook reportedly held talks with China Mobile to introduce the iPhone on its network. Doing so would give it 600 million more customers in the country, especially if Apple also decides to provide a cheaper, prepaid version of its iPhone 3GS.
Android smartphone maker HTC also reports increased success in the Asian market, shipping 11 million smartphones inside China this last quarter.
Other Android phone manufacturers too have their eyes on the populous country, as analysts predict over one billion people there will own smartphones in the next five years.
Nokia too is looking to push into Asia with lower-end handsets, which could take a chunk out of smartphone sales since the latter tend to be more affordable.
The competition is fierce, but this unexplored market is up for grabs, and upstarts like Aliyn may see success if it can grapple with rivals for the upper hand.

iPad 2 Running iOS 5 Security Vulnerability, Using A Smart Cover Password Can be Easily Bypassed

Reports of security flaws in Apple's new iOS 5 continue to surface. There's a super easy way to bypass a password-protected locksreen on an iPad 2 that's equipped with iOS 5, which we've successfully completed with steps provided by German blog Apfeltalk.
Here's how to re-create the flaw. First, enable password protection on the iPad 2 and lock it. Second, hold down the power button for a couple seconds until you see the red "slide to power off" slider at the top of the screen. Third, close the smart cover and open the smart cover again. And fourth, tap "cancel" at the bottom of the screen. What you should see next is the last screen accessed before you locked your tablet. Don't have a smart cover? You can skip step three by simply grazing a magnet across the right side of the tablet.
Video Demonstration:-

Note that this doesn't completely unlock the device. It only opens the screen you were last looking at, but nothing more; you can't open apps or perform tasks. But it's a big deal if you were, say, doing some incriminating Web surfing and left your iPad 2 lying around a house with a curious (and tech-savvy) partner. We tried it on both iOS 5 and iOS 4.3.3, and it only worked on iOS 5, so it appears to be a software flaw. No doubt Apple is aware of the issue and will hopefully fix it in an imminent update.

Latest iPad Jailbroken Immediately After Release

Latest iPad Jailbroken Immediately After Release
The new iPad tablet was released by Apple on Friday but yet again the same history repeated. Though in this release Apple forbids installing applications it has not approved, but hackers have found ways to "jailbreak" devices, or modify the code to allow unauthorized programs from alternative application stores such as Cydia.  But  fail to stop the hacker. The much-awaited device. Reportedly, the next-generation iPad was jailbroken within three hours of its market release on March 16. "Musclenerd," a member of the iPhone Dev Team, posted a screenshot on Twitter on Mar. 16 showing how he got root access on the latest Apple tablet. Another member, Stefan Esser, or @i0nic, posted a video showing an untethered jailbreak for his third-generation iPad. Finally, Grant Paul, or @chpwn, disclosed a third method to get root on the new iPad. There are three different methods to jailbreak the latest Apple iOS 5.1 software, and videos and screenshots posted over the weekend showed the hacks, according to the Dev-Team, which developed the first jailbreak tool.
In January, the tool Absinthe A5 was released, which could jailbreak both the iPhone 4S and iPad running software versions just before iOS 5.1. It took about 10 months to develop due to the difficulty the hacking group GreenPois0n found in trying to find a way to exploit the A5 processor. On the other hand, Apple is very strict about the control it exerts over its products, and iOS device owners have no choice but to buy and use software and content through Apple’s channels without a jailbreak. So it comes down to each users’ preferences: is it better to break the control and run the risk, or stay within Apple’s relatively safe walled garden with fewer choices?

In Server Growth IBM beats HP & Oracle

IBM's server revenues grew 22.1% in the first quarter, outpacing rivals as demand for the types of high-end systems in which Big Blue specializes picked up. Total industry revenue from non-x86 servers, including Unix and mainframe systems, jumped 12.3%, compared to a 10.1% increase in revenue from sales of servers that run Windows or Linux on industry-standard chips, according to numbers released Wednesday by market watcher IDC. IBM's quarterly server revenues came in at $3.5 billion, making it the number two player in sales behind Hewlett-Packard. But IBM's server business is growing faster than that of its Palo Alto-based rival, which saw 10.8% growth. IBM officials said the company's rich portfolio of Unix and mainframe technologies is allowing it to cash in on customers' moves to higher-end systems. Rod Adkins, senior VP for Systems and Technology, said businesses' need to deal with ever larger amounts of data, structured and unstructured, is driving them toward tightly integrated systems like IBM's Power7 line. Servers like the Power7-based Power 780 are designed so that the processors, middleware, and hardware work in concert to deal with applications feeding huge amounts of so-called big data from sources as diverse as call centers, smartphones, and tablet computers. "We'll continue to have a unique advantage," said Adkins, in an interview. "When you start to think about the nature of these applications and workloads, and the types of integration that you need to do going forward, the investments that you make at each layer of the system stack will make a difference." IDC officials said growth in enterprise-class systems is also being driven by companies' need to refresh older systems—something they put off during the recession. "The Unix server marketplace is seeing new market dynamics centered on technology refresh for mission-critical workloads," said IDC research vice president Jean Bozman, in a statement. "This segment was hard-hit in 2009 and 2010 during the economic downturn as customers deferred or delayed acquisition of midrange and high-end Unix servers," said Bozman. "Customers' servers are being refreshed to carry forward Unix-specific, mission-critical workloads." Growth wasn't limited to the high-end of the server market. Total industry revenue from systems that run on x86 chips from Intel or AMD grew 12%, to $7.9 billion, while unit shipments increased 2.6%. Overall, HP led the market with Q1 sales of $3.8 billion, up 10.8% from the previous year. Its market share fell slightly, from 31.8% to 31.5%. IBM's market share grew from 26.9% to 29.2%. Dell, the number three player, saw sales increase 9.7%, to $1.9 billion, but its share fell to 15.6%, from 16% the previous year. Oracle, which entered the server business last year when it completed its $7.4 billion buyout of Sun Microsystems, saw system revenues increase to $773 million in the quarter, up 13.6% from the previous year. Its market share was 6.5%.

Windows 8 Consumer Preview & Windows Server 8 Beta By Microsoft (Freely Downloadable)

Microsoft Released Windows 8 Consumer Preview & Windows Server 8 Beta (Freely Downloadable)
A double boom for Windows lovers. Software giant Microsoft has officially released the Consumer Preview Windows 8 & Windows Server 8 Beta.
Windows 8 Consumer Preview :-
The Windows 8 Consumer Preview offers a more robust experience for testing the world's most popular operating system and is available to the widest range of people yet following the initial release of the Windows 8 Developer Preview late last year. The Developer Preview received more than 3 million downloads.
"With Windows 8, we reimagined the different ways people interact with their PC and how to make everything feel like a natural extension of the device, whether using a Windows 8 tablet, laptop or all-in-one," said Steven Sinofsky, president of the Windows and Windows Live Division at Microsoft. "The Windows 8 Consumer Preview brings a no-compromises approach to using your PC."
The test "beta" version of the revamped system was introduced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the planet's largest cell phone trade show, and borrows some of the look of Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 software for Windows 8. Windows 8 doesn't have the traditional "Start" menu, and applications are spread across a mosaic of tiles in a design Microsoft calls "Metro" -- seen as an attempt by the company as a scramble to preserve its market share. And executives said it powers up on PCs in eight seconds, much faster than the previous version.
What is New In Windows 8 Consumer Preview :-
  • Broad range of product changes and improvements. Since the Developer Preview in September, designed to preview the programming platform, Windows 8 has progressed across every dimension. From completing the user experience for touch, keyboard and mouse to refining the development platform, the Consumer Preview improves performance, quality and reliability across all subsystems.
  • With the added features, it represents a more complete view of the capabilities of Windows 8. Windows Store with new apps. The Windows 8 Consumer Preview marks the beta opening of the Windows Store, which is filled with a variety of new Metro style apps from both third-party developers and Microsoft. During the Consumer Preview, these apps are available to try and experience at no cost to users. The Windows Store will offer personalised recommendations, and Windows 8 gives users the ability to take their apps and settings with them across multiple PCs, making it easy to discover and try new apps while offering developers the greatest opportunity of any platform.
  • Connecting to the cloud across Windows-based PCs and Windows Phone 7. The Windows 8 Consumer Preview offers seamless integration with the content people care about across their Web services. An optional additional sign-on with a Microsoft account provides access to a host of features, including the ability to roam all settings, use cloud storage, communicate with email, calendar and contacts, and connect to a broad range of services. Your connection to the cloud works across your Windows-based PCs and your Windows 7 phones.
  • Internet Explorer 10 Platform Preview 5. The best way to experience the Web on Windows is with Internet Explorer 10. The browser has been re-imagined to create a new experience designed specifically for Windows 8 devices. It provides an edge-to-edge user interface that is all about less browser and more Web. Fast and fluid, Internet Explorer is hardware-accelerated to enable Web performance.
  • Preview of new hardware capabilities. At the event, Microsoft also showcased Windows 8 running on a wide range of new x86- and ARM-based reference hardware. This hardware will be available to select developers for trial and testing as previously announced.
Additional details can be found on the official website of Microsoft Windows. Also Microsoft makes Windows 8 Consumer Preview is made available for free Download

Windows Server 8 Beta :-
The beta of Windows Server 8 is now available for IT professionals and software developers around the world to download. In the Windows Server official Blog Bill Laing, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Corporation Said - In September we introduced Windows Server “8” with a preview to help developers and hardware partners prepare new and existing applications, systems and devices. The response from that community, along with hundreds of customers in our early adopters program, has been incredibly positive. A common theme of feedback has been how broad and deep the new capabilities are. Now is the time for you, IT professionals in organizations of all sizes, to get your hands on this new release, discover the new capabilities and contribute to the development of what we call the cloud-optimized OS.
I’ll highlight in this post just a few examples of new capabilities that you’ll want to explore. With the new Hyper-V we are taking virtualization above and beyond to provide a multi-tenant platform for cloud computing. For example, with Hyper-V Network Virtualization you can create virtual networks so different business units, or even multiple customers, can seamlessly share network infrastructure.  You will be able to move virtual machines and servers around without losing their network assignments. In Windows Server “8” we are delivering high availability and disaster recovery through software technology on much more cost effective hardware. For example, with File Server Transparent Failover you can now more easily perform hardware or software maintenance of nodes in a File Server cluster by moving file shares between nodes with little interruption to server applications that are storing data on those file shares. We’re also delivering a tremendous amount of new capabilities for multi-machine management and automation. You will want to explore the dramatic new improvements to Server Manager, as well as the new Windows PowerShell. With 2,300 commandlets provided out of the box, Windows PowerShell allows you to automate everything you can do manually with the user interface. And, with technologies like Intellisense, we’ve made it very easy for you to master all of that power. Additionally, Windows Server “8” provides a powerful server application platform that enables you to develop and host the most demanding of application workloads. For example, with .NET Framework 4.5 you can take advantage of new asynch language and library support to build server and web applications that scale far beyond what other platforms provide. Our new IIS 8 web server provides better security isolation and resource sand-boxing between applications, native support for web sockets, and the ability to host significantly more sites on a server.
