ICASI Publishes Standardized Framework for Reporting IT System Vulnerabilities : CVRF Version 1.0




The Industry Consortium for Advancement of Security on the Internet (ICASI), a nonprofit association dedicated to enhancing global IT security by proactively driving excellence and innovation in security response, today announced the publication of its Common Vulnerability Reporting Framework (CVRF) Version 1.0.     

CVRF is an XML-based framework that enables stakeholders across different organizations to share critical vulnerability-related information in an open and common machine-readable format. This format replaces the myriad of current nonstandard reporting formats, thus speeding up information exchange and processing. CVRF is available to the public free of charge, along with additional information, at ICASI.org/cvrf.
"CVRF represents a true milestone in industry efforts to raise and broaden awareness of security vulnerabilities," said Linda Betz, president of ICASI and director of IT Policy and Information Security at IBM. "With the use of CVRF, the producers of vulnerability reports will benefit from faster and more standardized reporting. End users will be able to find, process and act upon relevant information more quickly and easily, with a higher level of confidence that the information is accurate and comprehensive. Consumers will ultimately benefit with safer systems and applications."
Although the computer security community has made significant progress in several other areas in recent years, including categorizing and ranking the severity of vulnerabilities in information systems, there has been no standard framework for creating vulnerability report documentation. Methods such as embedding security metric and vulnerability data inside response reports are all vendor-specific, non-standard and time consuming to decipher manually.
Through its CVRF Project, ICASI undertook to remedy this lack of standardization, using the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) draft Incident Object Description Exchange Format (IODEF) as a starting point. The project team – including contributors from ICASI Founding Members Cisco Systems, Intel Corporation, International Business Machines, Juniper Networks, Microsoft Corporation and Nokia, along with representatives from Oracle and Red Hat – also surveyed enterprise users about similarities and differences in current vulnerability reporting, asking them what future reporting methods should address. The team then expanded existing security documentation formats and integrated a best-of-breed solution into a common, open XML-based framework ‒ CVRF ‒ that brings consolidation and consistency to the security vulnerability documentation space, and is expected to grow organically among stakeholders.
The XML-based framework of CVRF predefines a large number of fields, with extensibility and robustness in mind. These fields are consistent in naming and data type, so that any organization that adopts and understands CVRF can easily produce documents or read the ones that another CVRF-equipped organization has produced. Independent discoverers of bugs, large vendors, security coordinators and end users of security response efforts worldwide can all write CVRF documents to share critical vulnerability-related information. Widespread use of CVRF will accelerate information dissemination and exchange and incident resolution as a result.
ICASI's intention is that CVRF be a living framework that will be enhanced and revised as necessary. ICASI plans to continue supporting CVRF to ensure that it will remain both stable and free for use by all. Hackers Exploiting Old Ruby on Rails Vulnerability (CVE-2013-0156) To Compromise Web Servers & Create IRC Botnet
A critical vulnerability on Ruby on Rails spotted in January this year which was deemed “critical” at the same time yet again found in the wild. The vulnerability known as CVE-2013-0156 that affected versions 3.0.20 and 2.3.16 again rises it's hand. Though a security patch was released by the Rails developers. But as we all know that many server administrator used to be unaware of these events have not patched their systems. As a result hackers and cyber criminals are actively exploiting a critical vulnerability in the Ruby on Rails Web application development framework in order to compromise Web servers and create a dangerous botnet. This major security issue was first discovered by a security consultant Mr. Jeff Jarmoc of research firm Matasano Security. In his blog Jarmoc said "It’s pretty surprising that it’s taken this long to surface in the wild, but less surprising that people are still running vulnerable installations of Rails. It also appears to be affecting some web hosts." According to his blog post -the exploit that's currently being used by attackers adds a custom cron job -- a scheduled task on Linux machines that executes a sequence of commands. Those commands download a malicious C source file from a remote server, compile it locally and execute it. The resulting malware is a bot that connects to an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) server and joins a predefined channel where it waits for commands from the attackers. A pre-compiled version of the malware is also downloaded in case the compilation procedure fails on the compromised systems.
"Functionality is limited, but includes the ability to download and execute files as commanded, as well as changing servers," Jarmoc said. "There's no authentication performed, so an enterprising individual could hijack these bots fairly easily by joining the IRC server and issuing the appropriate commands." But the matter of relief is that Jarmoc concluded while saying "this is a pretty straightforward skiddy exploit of a vulnerability that has been publicly known, and warned about, for months."

But still administrators who have not yet patched their Rails version should immediately should update the Ruby on Rails installations on their servers to at least versions 3.2.11, 3.1.10, 3.0.19 or 2.3.15 which contain the patch for this vulnerability. However, the best course of action is probably to update to the latest available Rails versions, depending on the branch used, since other critical vulnerabilities have been addressed since then.

III. DESCRIPTION

Has been detected a reflected XSS vulnerability in Oracle Application
Server, that allows the execution of arbitrary HTML/script code to be
executed in the context of the victim user's browser.

The code injection is done through the DAD name. A DAD (Database
Access Descriptor) is a set of values that specifies how a database
server should fulfill a HTTP request.

Ekoparty Conference: Stealth Password Cracking Vulnerability Found in Oracle Database

Researchers unveiled serious vulnerability in the authentication protocol used by some Oracle databases, a flaw that could enable a remote attacker to brute-force a token provided by the server prior to authentication and determine a user's password. The attacker could then log on as an authenticated user and take unauthorized actions on the database. The vulnerability exists in Oracle Database 11g Releases 1 and 2 and is caused by a problem with the way the authentication protocol protects session keys when users try to log in. The first step in the authentication process when a client contacts the database server is for the server to send a session key back to the client, along with a salt. The vulnerability enables an attacker to link a specific session key with a specific password hash. The researcher who discovered the bug named Esteban Martinez Fayó has also released a tool that can crack some simple passwords in about five hours on a normal PC.  Fayó is a security specialist of AppSec Inc, he demonstrated his findings at the Ekoparty conference which is currently taking place in Buenos Aires. 
According to Esteban Martinez Fayo "This Session Key is a random value that the server generates and sends as the initial step in the authentication process, before the authentication has been completed.  This is the reason why this attack can be done remotely without the need of authentication and also, as the attacker can close the connection once the Session Key has been sent, there is no failed login attempt recorded in the server because the authentication is never completed."  He also staid "Once the attacker has a Session Key and a Salt (which is also sent by the server along with the session key), the attacker can perform a brute force attack on the session key by trying millions of passwords per second until the correct one is found.  This is very similar to a SHA-1 password hash cracking.  Rainbow tables can’ t be used because there is a Salt used for password hash generation, but advanced hardware can be used, like GPUs combined with advanced techniques like Dictionary hybrid attacks, which can make the cracking process much more efficient."  
"Basically, I discovered that not all failed login attempts were recorded by the database.  Looking closer at the issue, I located the problem in the way that one of the components of the logon protocol, the Session Key, was protected.  I noticed that, in a certain way, the Session Key was leaking information about the password hash," he added 
Although Oracle closed the hole with the 11.2.0.3 patch set, which introduced the new version 12 of the protocol in mid-2011, Fayó said that there has been no fix for versions 11.1 and 11.2 of the database because the update was never included in any of Oracle's regular "critical patch updates". The researcher explained that unless administrators activate the new protocol manually, the database will continue to use the vulnerable version 11.2 protocol. The vulnerability is in a widely deployed product and is easy to exploit, Fayo said he considers it to be quite dangerous. "The Oracle stealth password cracking vulnerability is a critical one.  There are many components to affirm this: It is easy to exploit, it doesn’t leave any trace in the database server and it resides in an essential component of the logon protocol," he said.
"It is very simple to exploit.  The attacker just needs to send a few network packets or use a standard Oracle client to get a Session Key and Salt for a particular user.  Then, an attack similar to that of cracking SHA-1 password hash can be performed. I developed a proof-of-concept tool that shows that it is possible to crack an 8 characters long lower case alphabetic password in approximately 5 hours using standard CPUs."

The Redmond based software giant Microsoft issued an urgent security advisory to address vulnerabilities in its popular web-browser that is Internet Explorer.  Few of days new “zero day” security hole in IE was discovered which could potentially allow hackers to take over control of your system when all you've done is visit an infected website. The vulnerability affects IE versions 6, 7 and 8. Though the latest versions of the browser, that means IE 9 and 10, are not affected. “An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the current user.” Microsoft said in its statement. The statement went on to say, “an attacker could host a website that contains a webpage that is used to exploit this vulnerability. In addition, compromised websites and websites that accept or host user-provided content or advertisements could contain specially crafted content that could exploit this vulnerability.”
On its advisory Microsoft first issued warning of the problem, which involves how IE accesses "an object in memory that has been deleted or has not been properly allocated." The problem corrupts the browser's memory, allowing attackers to execute their own code. Security vendor Symantec described such a scenario as a "watering hole" attack, where victims are profiled and then lured to the malicious site. Last week, one of the websites discovered to have been rigged to delivered an attack was that of the Council on Foreign Relations, a renowned foreign policy think tank.

Earlier we have discussed that researchers found serious vulnerability in video conferencing systems which can even allow hackers to listen into a company's confidential discussions. Now security professional from Qualys Community has released an open source Auto Detect tool based on python which is capable to detect vulnerabilities in all those equipment used in video conferencing. In the press release the developers said -
Customers can use QualysGuard in conjunction with the auto-detect.py tool to identify videoconferencing systems with 'auto-answer' enabled as follows:
  • Use QualysGuard scanner to find H.323 equipment. For existing scans, this can be achieved by creating a report filtered by service and port. If your existing scans are stale, you can do a selective scan on QID 82023 which lists all TCP services and then create a report filter.
  • Use the tool above to manually confirm if ‘auto-answer’ is enabled.
Once vulnerable videoconferencing systems are identified, QualysGuard and internal processes can be used to manage and reduce the risk of attack to these systems.
This videoconferencing vulnerability, like the printer vulnerability identified in January, is a timely reminder that, while most vulnerability management effort is focused on the core set of servers and end-user devices like PCs, it's important to consider the potential vulnerability of all devices in your network.

Denial of Service Vulnerability in Cisco IOS Software IPv6


Cisco IOS Software contains a vulnerability in the IP version 6 (IPv6) protocol stack implementation that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a reload of an affected device that has IPv6 enabled. The vulnerability may be triggered when the device processes a malformed IPv6 packet.
Cisco has released free software updates that address this vulnerability. There are no workarounds to mitigate this vulnerability.
Note:- The September 28, 2011, Cisco IOS Software Security Advisory bundled publication includes ten Cisco Security Advisories. Nine of the advisories address vulnerabilities in Cisco IOS Software, and one advisory addresses a vulnerability in Cisco Unified Communications Manager. Each advisory lists the Cisco IOS Software releases that correct the vulnerability or vulnerabilities detailed in the advisory as well as the Cisco IOS Software releases that correct all vulnerabilities in the September 2011 Bundled Publication. 


Affected Products:-

Cisco devices that are running an affected version of Cisco IOS Software and configured for IPv6 operation are vulnerable. A device that is running Cisco IOS Software and that has IPv6 enabled will show some interfaces with assigned IPv6 addresses when the show ipv6 interface brief command is executed.
The show ipv6 interface brief command will produce an error message if the version of Cisco IOS Software in use does not support IPv6, or will not show any interfaces with IPv6 address if IPv6 is disabled. The system is not vulnerable in these scenarios.

A device that is running Cisco IOS Software and that has IPv6 enabled on a physical or logical interface is vulnerable even if ipv6 unicast-routing is globally disabled (that is, the device is not routing IPv6 packets).
To determine the Cisco IOS Software release that is running on a Cisco product, administrators can log in to the device and issue the show version command to display the system banner. The system banner confirms that the device is running Cisco IOS Software by displaying text similar to "Cisco Internetwork Operating System Software" or "Cisco IOS Software." The image name displays in parentheses, followed by "Version" and the Cisco IOS Software release name. Other Cisco devices do not have the show version command or may provide different output.
The following example identifies a Cisco product that is running Cisco IOS Software Release 15.0(1)M1 with an installed image name of C3900-UNIVERSALK9-M:

Adobe release patch for Flash Player to prevent XSS


Adobe has released an out-of-cycle security update for Flash Player just days after learning of a new zero-day vulnerability. The vulnerability affected Flash Player 10.3.181.16 and earlier versions on Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Solaris, and Android version 10.3.185.22 and earlier. Despite the speed of the patch release, the vulnerability did not get the top "critical" rating, but is still rated "important". The "important" status denotes a vulnerability which could compromise data security, allowing hackers access to confidential data, or could compromise processing resources in a user's computer. "This universal cross-site scripting vulnerability (CVE-2011-2107) could be used to take actions on a user's behalf on any website or webmail provider, if the user visits a malicious website," Adobe said in a security bulletin. According to Adobe, the vulnerability is being exploited in the wild, in active, targeted attacks tricking the user into clicking on a malicious link delivered in an e-mail message. Adobe recommends users of the affected versions for Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Solaris update to Adobe Flash Player 10.3.181.22 or 10.3.181.23 for ActiveX. The firm expects to release an update for Flash Player 10.3.185.22 for Android later this week.
Adobe investigated the flaw in Adobe Reader and Acrobat versions 10.x and 9.x for Windows and Macintosh, but said it was unaware of zero-day attacks against those platforms.
Google has updated its Chrome web browser, also affected by the vulnerability.

Two Young Researchers Found Security Flaws in Microsoft Windows Live Which Could Lead Identity Theft
Recently two young security researchers of Morocco named Abdeljalil S'hit and Yasser Aboukir discovered a serious vulnerability in Microsoft's Windows Live service. The vulnerability has been reported to Microsoft, but unfortunately the software giant neither gave compastion nor  did any comment about the said topic. In a report ZDNet said the vulnerability in question leveraged Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) to execute a malicious script. 

More specifically, the two researchers managed to cause an error on the Windows Live login page (as you can see above), and once the victim clicked on the "Continue" button, their malicious script would be executed. XSS flaw means that an attacker could impersonate a Windows Live user by gaining full control of the victim's cookies. Combined with social engineering, this technique could be used to steal a victim's Windows Live identity with ease. 

The last update we got from Microsoft is saying - "We quickly addressed the vulnerability in question to help keep customers protected and appreciate the researchers using Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure to assist in us working toward a fix in a coordinated manner"

SQL Injection Vulnerability Affected All Versions of Ruby on Rails (CVE-2012-5664)

Developers at Ruby on Rails are warning its users regarding a Sql Injection flaws which has affected all the current version of Ruby on Rails web framework. While exploiting the vulnerability an attacker can inject and even execute malicious codes into the web application. "Due to the way dynamic finders in Active Record extract options from method parameters, a method parameter can mistakenly be used as a scope. Carefully crafted requests can use the scope to inject arbitrary SQL," explained the Rails framework's developers. As soon as this vulnerability has been spotted in the wild, the maintainers of Ruby on Rails have released new versions that addresses the flaw, versions 3.2.10, 3.1.9 and 3.0.18. In their advisory Ruby on Rails team recommends that users running affected versions, which is essentially anyone using Ruby on Rails, upgrade immediately to one of the fixed versions mentioned earlier. "We're sorry to drop a release like this so close to the holidays but regrettably the exploit has already been publicly disclosed and we don't feel we can delay the release," Rails developer concluded. 

The original problem was disclosed on the Phenoelit blog in late December where the author applied the technique to extract user credentials from a Ruby on Rails system, circumventing the authlogic authentication framework. While talking about the vulnerability discloser of Ruby on Rails, we would like to remind you that, this is not the first time, earlier in 2012 a Russian security researcher named Homakov has found that Github has succumbed to a public key vulnerability in Ruby on Rails which is allowing a normal user to gain administrator access into the popular Rails Git.

Vulnerability Found in Samsung Printers Allowing Remote Hack 

Bad news for those who are using Samsung and Dell-branded printers, as in an advisory U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US CERT) issued an warning that a hard coded administrative account could allow remote attackers to take control of their device. According to the vulnerability note (VU#281284)Samsung printers contain a hardcoded account that could allow a remote attacker to take control of an affected device. Samsung printers (as well as some Dell printers manufactured by Samsung) contain a hardcoded SNMP full read-write community string that remains active even when SNMP is disabled in the printer management utility. Manipulating the above vulnerability a remote, unauthenticated attacker could access an affected device with administrative privileges. Secondary impacts include: the ability to make changes to the device configuration, access to sensitive information (e.g., device and network information, credentials, and information passed to the printer), and the ability to leverage further attacks through arbitrary code execution. 
Solution:-
Samsung and Dell have stated that models released after October 31, 2012 are not affected by this vulnerability. Samsung and Dell have also indicated that they will be releasing a patch tool later this year to address vulnerable devices.
Block Port 1118/udp
The reporter has stated that blocking the custom SNMP trap port of 1118/udp will help mitigate the risks.

Restrict Access:
As a general good security practice, only allow connections from trusted hosts and networks. Restricting access would prevent an attacker from accessing an SNMP interface using the affected credentials from a blocked network location.

While talking about vulnerabilities in Printer, then we would like to remind you that late in last year Columbia University Researchers have discovered a vulnerability in some Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet printer lines that could allow attackers to install a modified firmware to steal information, run attacks from within a network or cause physical damage to the printer. Just as Oracle is ramping up for the September 30 start of JavaOne 2012 in San Francisco yet again another critical Java vulnerability has been spotted in the wild.  The Polish security researcher Adam Gowdiak has found another vulnerability in Java that could allow an attacker to bypass the sandbox. This newly discovered security hole has effected all latest versions of Oracle Java SE software. According to Security Explorations researcher Adam Gowdiak, who sent the email to the Full Disclosure Seclist, this Java exploit affects one billion users of Oracle Java SE software.” So far the researcher were able to successfully exploit the vulnerability and achieve a complete Java security sandbox bypass 
in the environment of Java SE 5, 6 and 7. Researcher could only claim such an impact with reference to Java 7 environment (the 
Apple QuickTime attack relying on Issues 15 and 22 is the only exception here). 





The following Java SE versions were verified to be vulnerable:

  • Java SE 5 Update 22 (build 1.5.0_22-b03)
  • Java SE 6 Update 35 (build 1.6.0_35-b10)
  • Java SE 7 Update 7  (build 1.7.0_07-b10)


All tests were successfully conducted in the environment of a fully patched Windows 7 32-bit system and with the following web browser applications:

  • Firefox 15.0.1
  • Google Chrome 21.0.1180.89
  • Internet Explorer 9.0.8112.16421 (update 9.0.10)
  • Opera 12.02 (build 1578)
  • Safari 5.1.7 (7534.57.2)
So far there are no reports that the vulnerability is being exploited for attacks. Oracle has not said whether or when it will close the vulnerability. Here we want to remind the very recent history, when several zero day vulnerability was found in all the version of java, which was added on BlackHole Exploit kit. Later Oracle released a patch to close the security hole.

Recent security issue I mean the 0-day vulnerability on hotmail, which was allowing users to reset passwords remotely has been fixed. The vulnerability existed in Hotmail's password reset feature. Hackers were able to use a Firefox add-on called Tamper Data to intercept the outgoing HTTP request following a password reset request and modify the data, locking out the account holder and gaining access to their inbox.
 Microsoft security team said in a tweet on Friday that it had "addressed a reset function incident to help protect Hotmail customers", and that no further action was needed on the customer's part. "The vulnerability allows an attacker to reset the Hotmail/MSN password with attacker chosen values. Remote attackers can bypass the password recovery service to setup a new password and bypass in place protections (token based) … Successful exploitation results in unauthorised MSN or Hotmail account access," the researchers wrote on Thursday. Although public disclosure only came on Thursday, reports had already been circulating of the flaw's exploitation.  The WhiteC0de blog noted a week ago that the exploit had "spread like wildfire across the hacking community", with victims losing money and, in some cases, valuable usernames. The Whitec0de report also noted rumours of a separate "critical vulnerability" in Hotmail that is also being exploited by hackers, but stressed that there was no evidence yet of these rumours' veracity.

Google Patches Sidejacking Vulnerability


Google has been rolling out a server-side patch for the ClientLogin authentication protocol vulnerability that affects 99.7% of Android smartphones.
"We recently started rolling out a fix which addresses a potential security flaw that could, under certain circumstances, allow a third party access to data available in calendar and contacts. This fix requires no action from users and will roll out globally over the next few days," said a Google spokesperson via email.

 Google's fix comes in response to a warning, published earlier this month by researchers at the University of Ulm in Germany, that Android devices could be exploited in a sidejacking-like attack. Just as website session cookies can be stolen (sidejacked), allowing attackers to impersonate a user, attackers could sniff data being sent to and from Android smartphones that are connected to unsecured Wi-Fi networks--by using a tool such as Wireshark--and capture tokens for any Google service that uses the ClientLogin authentication protocol. Applications that use this protocol include Google Calendar, Contacts, and Picasa, as well as third-party applications for Facebook and Twitter.
Android smartphone users running the latest OS, 2.3.4, were already protected against the vulnerability. But 99.7% of Android users are still on older operating systems.
Accordingly, Google's solution has been a server-side fix that forces Android devices to use HTTPS--to keep data encrypted--when syncing with the Google Contacts or Calendar, so that authentication credentials can't be intercepted. "The great news is that it doesn't require a software update on the Android devices themselves--meaning the fix is automatic and worldwide. Effectively this is a silent fix," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, in a blog post.
No attacks have been seen that exploit the vulnerability, and a fix is still in the works for Picasa. For now, Picasa users can mitigate the vulnerability by avoiding unsecured Wi-Fi networks, which would prevent their authentication credentials from being stolen.
Security-wise, Google's server-side patch is a crucial move because most cell phone carriers rarely push patches or OS updates to their customers. Because of that, some industry watchers had worried that Google would have difficulty securing older devices. For now, it's dodged that bullet, but in the future, major flaws could still pose a problem. "Concerns still remain as to how easy it would be to fix a serious security vulnerability on the Android devices themselves, given that Google is so reliant on manufacturers and carriers to push out OS updates," said Cluley.

Skype is Still Vulnerable

 
An Armenian hacker is claiming that Skype has failed to learn from prior security lessons, falling victim to a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability similar to one it patched in May, which would allow users to redirect victims to unwanted websites or run arbitrary code.  The May vulnerability allowed users to fool the Mac client of Skype into running arbitrary code as the client didn't check, or sanitise, instant messages to ensure they were free of malicious code.

While Skype issued a low-priority patch at the time, a 28-year-old Armenian-based security engineer, Levent "noptrix" Kayan, claimed on Wednesday night that a similar XSS vulnerability existed elsewhere in Skype's software. He said that the failure to sanitise certain user information or the output rendered in Skype clients could still allow code to be executed.

In particular, Kayan claimed that he could see remote users' session information, which he said a malicious user could utilise to masquerade as the remote user and make calls on their account. He also said it could be used to take advantage of other holes, possibly allowing full control over the PC. Both of the latest versions of Windows and Mac clients are affected.
HE told that "An attacker would need to [submit] malicious code. The victim doesn't have to do anything. He will be attacked, when he just logs into his account."
Skype said the vulnerability was considered a minor issue and that it had developed a fix for it which would be deployed next week.
Skype's head of information security, Adrian Asher, said that in order to exploit this, a person would have to be a validated contact of yours and one of the most frequent people you are in contact with and was therefore very unlikely to cause any issues in the real world. Nevertheless, he said the vulnerability shouldn't have existed and it would be fixed.
Additionally, Skype said that the session information that Kayan had been able to access was in relation to the web session IDs and not Skype IDs, suggesting that the attacker couldn't make calls using the exploit. It did, however, concede that it was possible for a victim's contacts to redirect them to any website using the web browser built into the Skype client, but stressed that only validated contacts would be able to do so. In the meantime, it said users should not authorise people they do not know and/or do not want to talk to.
HackLabs director, Chris Gatford, said that it was common to come across these sorts of vulnerabilities in the work penetration testing of client systems his company does.
"I would suggest that 80 per cent, perhaps even 90 per cent of the time, cross-site scripting vulnerabilities are present," he said.
Gatford mentioned the previous XSS vulnerability in the Skype client and thought that it was surprising that Skype had not patched all of its input validation problems when it was previously brought to its attention. "This would be a simple fix for them. To be honest, I'm kind of surprised they didn't learn their lesson the first time and extend the fix system-wide then."

PHP developers announce the immediate availability of PHP 5.3.10. which closes remote code execution vulnerability. In their previous release a serious Denial of Service (DoS) Vulnerability was found later the team has release a security update of 5.3.9 which close that DoS vulnerability. To do so, the developers limited the maximum possible number of input parameters to 1,000 in php_variables.c using max_input_vars. Because of mistakes in the implementation, hackers can intentionally exceed this limit and inject and execute code. The bug is considered to be critical as code can be remotely injected over the web. The development version of PHP already has a patch for the bug, but the PHP developers have yet to issue an official advisory. It is not yet clear whether there are sensible immediate measures and workarounds for concerned.
In this release developers are working to fix a critical security vulnerability in PHP that they introduced with a recent security patch. The current stable release is affected; however, it is not yet clear whether the questionable patch was also applied to older versions. PHP strongly encouraged all users to upgrade to PHP 5.3.10.

Microsoft To Responsibly Disclose Vulnerabilities

Software giant Microsoft has made some key changes in its vulnerability disclosure policies that are targeted towards make vulnerability a coordinated and collaborated effort.

According to a post on the Technet blog, the company has introduced a new Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure (CVD) at Microsoft document which simplifies how Microsoft discloses security vulnerabilities in its own software as well as third party software.

Microsoft also informed that it was releasing the first set of advisories under its Microsoft Vulnerability Research (MSVR) program. The company said that it had privately told certain software vendors about vulnerability in their offerings, which had now been fixed.

The company has also established an internal corporate Disclosure of Vulnerabilities policy which laid down protocols for employees to follow when they discover vulnerability in a third party product.

“We believe the most effective approach to security is a comprehensive Security Development Lifecycle that reduces or mitigates vulnerabilities before a product is released.  After a product or service is released, we feel security is a shared responsibility across the broad community,” Microsoft said.

“By working together through coordinated efforts when vulnerabilities are identified, we can effectively minimize customer risk while a solution is developed,” the company added.

Vulnerability in Apple MacBooks Which Could ruin Batteries


One prominent security researcher has discovered a vulnerability in the batteries of Apple's MacBook line of portable computers that could allow hackers to ruin the batteries or install malware on them that could corrupt a Mac.
Charlie Miller, a renowned white-hat hacker who works for security firm Accuvant, plans to reveal and offer a fix next month for a MacBook battery vulnerability he has discovered, Forbes reports. Miller uncovered default passwords, which are used to access the microcontroller in Apple's batteries, within a firmware update from 2009 and used them to gain access to the firmware.

Apple and other laptop makers use embedded chips in their lithium ion laptop batteries to monitor its power level, stop and start charging and regulate heat.
During the course of his tests, the researcher "bricked" seven batteries, rendering them unusable by rewriting the firmware. Of more concern is the possibility that hackers could use the vulnerability to install difficult to remove malware, or, in a worst case scenario, cause the batteries to explode.

“These batteries just aren’t designed with the idea that people will mess with them,” he said. “What I’m showing is that it’s possible to use them to do something really bad.” According to him, IT few administrators would think to check the battery, providing hackers with an opportunity to hide malicious software on a battery that could repeatedly implant itself on a computer.

Miller admitted that he hasn't tried to blow up any batteries, but he did say it might be possible. "You read stories about batteries in electronic devices that blow up without any interference,” he noted. “If you have all this control, you can probably do it.”
another researcher, Barnaby Jack, who works for antivirus software maker McAfee, also looked into the battery issue a couple years ago, but said he didn't get as far as Miller did.

Miller, who is a regular winner of security contests demonstrating Mac, Safari and iPhone exploits, has notified Apple and Texas Instruments of the issue. Despite requests from several other researchers not to proceed, he plans to unveil the vulnerability, along with a fix he calls "Caulkgun," at the Black Hat security conference next month.
"Caulk Gun" will change a battery's default passwords to a random string of characters. While the fix will prevent hackers from breaking into the battery, it would also block any future firmware updates from Apple.

In spite of the battery vulnerability that he uncovered, Miller believes Mac OS X security is better than ever before. According to him, Apple engineers made few security-related changes in the jump from Leopard to Snow Leopard, but they made substantial improvements in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, which was released on Wednesday.
"Now, they've made significant changes and it's going to be harder to exploit,” he said, as noted by The Register.
“It's a significant improvement, and the best way that I've described the level of security in Lion is that it's Windows 7, plus, plus,” said noted security consultant Dino Dai Zovi.
Apple offered security researchers, including Miller and Dai Zovi, an unprecedented early look at Lion in order to get their feedback.
According to researchers, Lion's biggest security improvement is Lion's support for Address Space Layout Randomization. ASLR randomizes the location of critical system components to reduce the risk of attack. Apple also added sandboxing security measures in Safari that will isolate potential bugs or malware. Finally, the newly revamped File Vault now allows an entire drive to be encrypted.
