LulzSec Guy Ryan gets bail, but he cannot use the Internet

Even though LulzSec has now disbanded and rejoined as part of Anonymous, that doesn’t mean their past hacks have been forgotten about. Early last week teenager and LulzSec member Ryan Cleary was arrested in the UK as it was claimed he is the “mastermind” of the hacking collective. A week later and he is out on bail, but under strict instructions not to access the Internet. That’s becoming quite a difficult thing to do nowadays. He won’t be allowed near a PC unless the Ethernet ports and wireless are disabled. A smartphone is out of the question, as is the Xbox, PS3, Wii, DS, PSP, 3DS. How about watching TV? Sure, as long as his house doesn’t have a new flatscreen with Internet out-the-box.
Cleary may not care much as at least he’s no longer sitting in a cell 24 hours a day. But his troubles are far from over. As well as no Internet access he is electronically tagged and under a curfew each day. He also has to face charges of hacking into several websites including the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA). We’ve also learned that Cleary is a recluse and suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome, just like Gary McKinnon the man who is fighting against extradition for breaking into U.S. military computers.
LulzSec has denied that anyone in their group has been arrested, but we have no evidence to back this up. On the other hand the police have someone they are sure is part of the hacking group, as well as being associated with Anonymous. If Cleary is a member then he could have in his possession detailed accounts of other members and what they got up to as a group. As the police also took his computer hardware we should know soon enough if there’s anything usable as more arrests will be made.

Mastercard.com Down (Wikileaks Motivated the DDOS Attack)

MasterCard's website is currently inaccessible following what appears to be a WikiLeaks-inspired internet attack against it. In what appears to be the latest salvo by hactivists, the mastercard.com website is thought to be suffering from a denial-of-service attack - where an internet site is bombarded with a large amount of traffic making it impossible for genuine visitors to access it.

A Twitter user called ibomhacktivist seems to be taking responsibility for the attack, and links the action to the WikiLeaks-inspired attack on MasterCard by the Anonymous group last year.
MasterCard angered the hacktivist community after it suspended the ability for WikiLeaks to accept payments via the firm. Police in the Netherlands arrested two teenagers for allegedly playing their part in the attacks last year. WikiLeaks is a subject which tends to generate strong emotions - whether you're in favour of what the organisation stands for, or against it.
Computer users would be wise, however, to remember that even if you feel WikiLeaks is being persecuted by the authorities or abandoned by online companies, denial-of-service attacks are still illegal.

US Govt. is Now Protecting Corporate Websites

Businesses facing a growing threat of cyberattacks against their websites will now have more tools to protect themselves and harden their Internet sites against hackers. The Homeland Security Department will help small companies and nonprofit groups avoid programming problems that allow hackers to get into the businesses' websites.  The government's latest cybersecurity effort follows a series of high-profile hacking attacks against corporate and federal websites, including one that shut down the CIA's site for several hours last week.
The new program was developed with the Mitre Corp. and is an effort to shore up known weaknesses in programming that give hackers a backdoor into websites. The effort began well before the recent website attacks. It includes a list of top 25 technical software problems that hackers exploit and sets up a way to rank software so that customers can see whether it meets necessary standards.
Right now, when owners of small businesses buy software or hire a firm to build a website, it is difficult to know whether the programs are secure or not, said Alan Paller, director of research at SANS Institute, a computer-security organization.

Operation Intifada By Anonymous (DDOS attack on Israel Gov)

The latest target of Operation Anonymous, which following the dissolution of LulzSec is the last substantial non-amorphous hacker collective left out there, could lead to some substantial geopolitical fallout. That is because the target of the just announced upcoming DDOS attack is none other than the Israeli Parliament, the Knesset, and while Israel has allegedly been happy to dispense hack attacks in the past, the onslaught on the Iranian nuclear power plant courtesy of the Stuxnet virus coming to mind, we doubt it will as happy to be seen on the receiving end of decentralized computer warfare. Either way, with the world focusing on Greece tomorrow, this development, and specifically what form of retaliation Israel adopts, will be yet another important factor to keep track of over the next 24 hours.
