Now Japn Govt. Will Help the Victims to Fight Against Hackers

Trade and Industry Ministry in Japan plans to establish a network of dozens of domestic firms and organizations to share information about attacks on their online computer systems, with the aim of improving Cyber security.
On Friday, the ministry announced its plan to organize the network, which will include some specialist online security firms, to analyze methods used by malicious hackers and the damage inflicted by their attacks. The names of companies affected by cyberattacks will not be made public. The ministry aims to launch the system on an experimental basis within this year. The ministry believes the number of cyberattacks targeting certain organizations has been on the rise since around 2006.
Virtually no details of such attacks or resulting damage have been disclosed to authorities, however, due to the affected companies' concerns about potential damage to their public images or stock prices. Cyberattacks against specific organizations or individuals are often launched by sending an email that appears to be from a friend or client of the target but actually contains a computer virus that enables hackers to access data in the target's computer system.
In April, the ministry's study panel on cybersecurity and related economic issues surveyed various companies, including major manufacturers and financial institutions.
Of the 46 companies that responded, 15 said they believed they had been targeted by a cyberattack.
At least three of the companies said confidential information had been stolen by hackers.
Although details of most cyber-attacks are not disclosed to authorities, many of the companies surveyed said they would cooperate if they were sure their involvement in the matter would not be made public.
The ministry hopes the proposed network will lead to companies providing more information about attacks on their computer systems, and enable authorities to improve cybersecurity countermeasures.
The dozens of participants in the scheme will include the Information-Technology Promotion Agency, an independent administrative entity; the Japan Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Center, an incorporated foundation; and private Internet security firms.
The ministry will compile new measures to counter cyberattacks within this month, taking into account opinions from the general public.

GOOLGE Plus is Putting Pressure on Facebook

Google is making a fresh attempt at social networking with a service that competes with Facebook. The service, called Google Plus, has a similar appearance as Facebook, with streaming updates of photos, messages, comments and other content from selected groups of friends, said Bradley Horowitz, vice president, product management. It will integrate Google’s maps and images.
As Internet users spend more time on social-networking sites, Google, the world’s biggest Internet-search company, is releasing new social features to lure web surfers to its own services and expand advertising sales. Facebook, the world’s most popular social network, captured 13 percent of total hours people spent online in May, while Google attracted 10 percent, according to ComScore Inc.
“It’s something that is changing the quality of Google itself,” Horowitz said of the push into social networks. “It’s the Google you know and love, but now with people.”
Chief Executive Officer Larry Page is starting Google (plus) after missteps last year with the introduction of a social component to Gmail called Buzz. In March, Google reached a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission to resolve concerns it violated its own privacy policies. Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt, CEO for a decade before Page assumed the role, said earlier this month that he “screwed up” in the area of social networking. “I clearly knew I had to do something and I failed to do it,” he said.

The new service will initially be available to only a limited set of users in a test. The company has been testing internally and it’s now ready to gradually open up what it calls a “project” to the general public. The service is available only by invite for now.

“This is a project that will span many years,” Horowitz said. “This is not something where we’re done. On the contrary — we’re just getting started, laying some of the foundation and then many features will evolve.”

With Google (plus), users easily share information based on the circle of friends they think would most like to see a photo or read a message. Once users sign up, they have a profile page with security settings that let them share or hide personal information, such as education or job descriptions.

Other Google (plus) features include Sparks, which gathers videos and articles on topics of interests or hobbies, and Hangouts, which lets friends join video chat with multiple people at once. There is also a mobile version of Google (plus) for handsets running the Android software, and the company is developing a version for Apple’s iPhone. The mobile version enables text-message chats with multiple users and, with an opt-in, photos and videos are automatically stored in an online album for later access.

“We already have users,” Horowitz said. “This isn’t a startup that’s trying to acquire users. The users are here already. It’s just that the experience we’ve offered them is incoherent and disconnected.”

NSG Officer (RS Pradhan) Official Mail Hacked

Inspector General RS Pradhan, who is holding an important position in NSG (National Security Guard), had a rude shock when he came to know that his official mail mail was hacked. The hacker send lot of mails to several recipients on his behalf. According to sources, he is incharge of operations to several assignments. He later informed to IB (Intelligence Bureau) about the breach in the system.
Senior IT officials of NSG pressed into service to look into the matter and meanwhile, suspended all the internal mail services till further instructions. Taking the matter seriously, the ministry of Home Affairs ordered a probe and directed for an overhaul of security features.
Though hackers have struck the NSG in the past also, sources said, the latest attack was “serious” and “confidential information may have been stolen”. It may be mentioned here that in December 2010, the CBI’s website was hacked by Pakistan Cyber Army.

It may be recalled that very recently, the office of Union Finance Minieter was also allegedly bugged. Even though government as well as FM denied the budding allegations, there are people who still believe that there was an attempt to bug the office of FM at North Block.

Now Mac OS X 10.7 Lion can be Installed in a Virtualized Environment

Mac OS X 10.7 Lion will bring quite a few new features from a user interface stand point. However, it looks like Lion will also bring a long awaited capability for the more advanced users. Apple will allow users to install Mac OS Lion client in a virtual environment. In 2007 Apple allowed Mac OS X Server to be installed in a virtualized environment, like VMWare Fusion and Parallels, but now Mac OS X Lion client will be possible to install in a virtual machine.
According to the end-user licensing agreement for Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, users can install up to two additional copies or instances within virtual operating system environments on each Mac Computer they own.
Why is this important? As we mentioned, this might not affect the everyday user but if you are a developer, you will be able to test your application in a virtualized environment without affecting your base installation. Or, if you like to test new software, you will be able to do so in a virtualized environment and then decide if you want to move that new software in your base, everyday desktop. And, if you buy/try an app from the Mac App Store, following the Mac App Store rules, you are entitled to install that app on all your Mac OS X installations, including the virtualized ones.
What makes this possible? We believe Apple is realizing that Mac OS X it self is not a huge stream of money. This explains the price of Mac OS X Lion at just $29.99 (Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard was priced at $129 in 2007). Where is Apple making its money? This is from the Mac App Store. The more Mac OS X environments out there, more potential customers for developers, more money for Apple (Apple is getting 30% of the app revenue).
The licensing agreement specifically mentions that users are entitled to install Mac OS X 10.7 Lion on virtual environments running on a Mac. So, if you are a Windows user, or have Windows computers at home, you are not allowed to run a virtual machine with Lion on these machines. However it will be interesting to see if users can easily port such a virtual machine on a Windows environment running VMWare Workstation or Parallels for Windows.
