Microsoft & SuSe Alliance (MS is Purchasing $100 Million of Support from SuSe)

Despite the problematic relationship between Microsoft and Linux vendors over the years, it’s not always been a case of frosty relationships.  Previously Microsoft decided to work closely with Novell on the Enterprise version of SUSE Linux, and now the company has renewed their alliance with SUSE by purchasing $100 million of support.
This support will be for Windows enterprise customers who are also running a SUSE machines in conjunction with their Windows boxes.  It’s a good move on the part of Microsoft to avoid upsetting business customers who are already feeling squeezed with extremely tight profit margins and software assurance costs to the Redmond giant.  The move will mean these enterprise customers won’t have to pay for further Linux support.

In a press release Microsoft said…
”As IT operating environments become increasingly consumerized, cloud-based and automated, there is an implicit expectation that the underlying technologies from multiple vendors should work together. For this reason, the collaborative relationship between Microsoft and SUSE has come to be viewed as a model for the industry.  The joint Microsoft-SUSE collaboration has served more than 725 customers worldwide across a range of industries, such as manufacturing, oil and gas, healthcare, and financial services.”

“Our collaboration with SUSE not only helps customers to achieve success today, but also seeks to provide them with a solid foundation for tomorrow,” said Sandy Gupta, general manager of the Open Solutions Group at Microsoft. “Through our continued engagement on the technical side, an outstanding support offering from SUSE and our ability to provide mutual IP assurance, we feel confident that we will be able to deliver core value to those running mixed-source IT environments well into the future – and into the cloud.”

This move doesn’t mean that Microsoft will stop complaining about Linux or even stop suing for patent infringement, as these are just what the technology industry does (probably at the request of lawyers needing to justify their sky-high salaries).  It’s further evidence though that, deep down, technology companies around the world are more interested in building better experiences for their customers than they are feathering their own nests.

This is something I have always felt sets the tech world apart from other industries such as finance or energy.  It’s a good move and both Microsoft and Novell should be applauded for working together again.

Anonymous & Lulzsec Declared #OpPayPal (Antisec)

Anonymous and LulzSec's PayPal boycott campaign gathers momentum. Following the arrests of members in connection with an attack on PayPal's Web site, hacktivist groups Anonymous and LulzSec have launched an online campaign calling for people to close their accounts with the e-payments firm.
Earlier this month the FBI arrested 14 people accused of involvement in last year's cyber-attack on PayPal's Web site by Anonymous in retaliation for the company's closure of a donation account for Wikileaks.
Anonymous has teamed with LulzSec under the #AntiSec banner to issue a joint statement, declaring themselves "outraged at the FBI's willingness to arrest and threaten those who are involved in ethical, modern cyber operations".
In a change of tack, the partners are now calling for a legal form of protest, saying "we encourage anyone using PayPal to immediately close their accounts and consider an alternative" and asking people to tweet pictures of their actions.
The call to arms appears to have gathered some momentum, with the #OpPayPal hashtag the number three trending topic worldwide by 12.00 GMT, prompting @AnonymousIRC to tweet

"We hoped for a little impact, but honestly did not expect this. Waiting for NASDAQ to open. Our tip: SELL EBAY! WikiWiki! #AntiSec #OpPayPal"

In a tweet posted late afternoon, Wikileaks says it intends to file suit against eBay and Paypal in the US and Europe in line with its ongoing legal and anti-trust actions against Visa and MasterCard.
Separately, Anonymous' Austrian branch has accessed the bank data of 96,000 people in an attack on the GIS television licence agency's Web site, according to AFP.

25 Year Guy Charged For Hacking NBN (National Broadband Nework)

An unemployed truck driver has been charged with hacking into an Australian broadband network provider and could have caused significant damage to the national Internet infrastructure, police said Wednesday. The 25-year-old man, who will appear in a New South Wales state magistrates court Wednesday, faces charges of hacking into one of the National Broadband Network's service providers and numerous other businesses and websites in Australia and overseas since May, Australian Federal Police manager Grant Edwards said. The suspect, from the rural town of Cowra, cannot be publicly named until he appears in court.
The investigation began in January when Sydney University reported that its website had been hacked and defaced. Police said Wednesday that there was no evidence that any personal information had been stolen from any of the businesses hacked.

"We'll allege in court today that the man could have potentially caused considerable damage to Australia's national infrastructure by attacking the National Broadband Network," Edwards told reporters.
The Sydney-based wholesale Internet provider, Platform Networks, is one of 13 contracted by the government-owned company NBN Co., which is rolling out one of the world's fastest fiber-optic broadband networks at a cost of 36 billion Australian dollars ($39 billion).

The alleged hacker has been charged over the NBN hacking with one count of unauthorized modification of data to cause impairment. He faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
Police have also charged him with another 48 counts of unauthorized access of restricted data. Each count is punishable by two years in prison.
Police say more charges are likely and that more hackers could be arrested.
The suspect used the online moniker "Evil" and his information technology skills were self-taught, Edwards said.
"We'll allege that he's motivated by ego in his illegal hacking and proving his skills after complaining that he could not get work in the IT industry," he said.
The case's chief investigator, police Supt. Brad Marden, said there was no evidence that any personal information had been stolen from any of the businesses hacked.
"The main activities that have occurred on those systems _ and again because he is motivated by ego _ is to deface and damage the systems rather than extract information," Marden told reporters.
NBN Co. assured customers in a statement that its network had not been affected by the hacking.

This is the Beginning of the End for the Optical Drive (Apple removed DVD

Shane Richmond says this is the beginning of the end for the optical drive. Apple last week removed DVD drives from its Mac Mini computers
Apple updated some of its computers last week. The MacBook Air and the Mac Mini both got significant processor upgrades and the addition of Thunderbolt ports. While the additions are interesting, it’s something that was removed that is especially telling.
It’s not the MacBook, though Apple did quietly retire its trusty old laptop from service, leaving just the Air and the Pro in the MacBook range. What’s gone is the optical drive on the Mac Mini.
That means neither the Air or the Mini have optical drives anymore. If you want to play a DVD or a CD - or to save data to one - then you’ll need a £66 SuperDrive. The MacBook Pro retains an optical drive for now but it's clear that Apple believes that the disc is living on borrowed time.
Many will argue that it is too soon to ditch the disc. Apple is familiar with that sort of reaction, however, and hasn’t been deterred in the past. There was an outcry, for example, when the iMac was launched in 1998 without a floppy disk drive. Apple's other computers gradually followed suit. Dell didn’t remove floppy drives from its machines until 2003.
If those who genuinely need an optical drive are not yet a minority then they soon will be. My MacBook Pro has an optical drive but I can’t remember the last time I needed to use it. At the end of last year I switched to a MacBook Air for day-to-day use and I’ve never wished that it had an optical drive.

This version basically adds support for iOS devices. Though sslsniff started out as a general-purpose MITM tool for SSL connections, recently, it was discovered that iOS devices such as the iPhone also contained the same vulnerability! Hence, this release. To start playing MITM for vulnerable iPhones,
