US & Russia "reset" their Cybersecurity Relationship

The United States and Russia have for several years been engaged in a high-level diplomatic “reset” of their relationship, complete with a physical "reset" button; now, that “reset” has been extended to the Internet.
The current goal of a better working relationship with Russia is much like the goal pursued by the US during the Cold War: making sure that the two countries did not misinterpret each others actions in such a way as to start an unnecessary conflict. While such relationships used to be about understanding troop movements or missile positioning, the two countries are now just as concerned with Internet actions.
"Both the US and Russia are committed to tackling common Cybersecurity threats while at the same time reducing the chances a misunderstood incident could negatively affect our relationship," said Howard Schmidt, US Cybersecurity Coordinator, in a statement yesterday.
We’re actively working on doing so in numerous ways: through regular exchanges of information on technical threats to both sides like botnets; by better understanding each other’s military views on operating in cyberspace; and by establishing 24/7 systems allowing us to communicate about cybersecurity issues via our existing and highly successful crisis prevention communications links between our two capitals. We plan to have all three mechanisms established by year’s end.
Such measures are increasingly important. The recent “International Strategy for Cyberspace," released by the US back in May, made clear that American officials would treat things like cyberattacks and Internet espionage the same way they would any offline threat. Indeed, an electronic attack could even bring the US military into action on behalf of an allied country.
"When warranted, the United States will respond to hostile acts in cyberspace as we would to any other threat to our country," said the document. "All states possess an inherent right to self-defence, and we recognize that certain hostile acts conducted through cyberspace could compel actions under the commitments we have with our military treaty partners We reserve the right to use all necessary means—diplomatic, informational, military, and economic—as appropriate and consistent with applicable international law, in order to defend our Nation, our allies, our partners, and our interests."
Given the difficulty of definitively identifying bad actors on the Internet and determining whether they are freelancers, organized crime, or foreign government agents, the possibilities for suspicion and misunderstanding remain high. The newest element of the US/Russian "reset" is meant to create some level of trust between officials on both sides.

Up-gradation of Firefox 5.0.1 for MAC OS X Has Been Fixed

Mozilla has released version 5.0.1 of Firefox. As previously reported, the maintenance update to Firefox 5 addresses problems with Apple's upcoming Mac OS X Lion operating system that could cause the browser to crash. Firefox 5.0.1 also resolves an issue caused by one of Apple's latest Java updates (Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 10) that prevented the Java plug-in from being loaded. Although the release notes mention only changes affecting the Mac OS X version of Firefox, updates to the Windows and Linux versions have also been released.
Further information about the update can be found in the release notes. Firefox 5.0.1 is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux from the project's web site. Alternatively, users can upgrade to the new versions either by waiting for the automated update notification or by manually selecting "Check for updates" from the Help Menu.
Update: To avoid a crashing problem on the upcoming version of Mac OS X, Mozilla has released an update to the 3.6.x branch of Firefox, version 3.6.19, that disables downloadable fonts when running on Mac OS X Lion. The developers say that they hope to enable them again in a future release. In a post on the Mozilla Developer Center blog, the developers also note that Windows and Linux users "do not need and will not see the update offer" for Firefox 3.6.19 or 5.0.1.

Kids & Teens are at Risk of Online Cyber Crime

It's a crime to post threatening and tormenting posts on someone’s Facebook profile - but few people know it.The Far South Coast command’s youth liaison officers are cracking down on internet crime, and cyber bullying among children and teenagers.
Senior Constable Adrian Seal is the school liaison officer for the Far South Coast and Monaro commands and says parents should closely monitor their child’s profile on social media sites, including Facebook.

“For most parents, they probably don’t really know how many criminal offences there actually are on the internet,” he said.
“And I don’t think kids think about the consequences.”
He said the main internet offences, which can carry penalties of up to 10 years’ jail, include stalking, intimidation and harassment, luring, threatening serious harm, sending offensive material and sexting - which involves sending sexually explicit photographs.
“For a lot of young people sexting, they probably don’t realise it’s a criminal offence,” Snr Const Seal said. “They just think what they’re doing is harmless. But as soon as they hit the send button, they have no control over it. It’s out there, in the public domain.
“For threatening serious harm to someone, all they have to prove is that the third party (or the victim) meant it.”
He said that carries 10 years’ jail.
Internet and social media sites are now a part of everyday life, according to Snr Const Seal, which makes it easier for bullying to occur. Snr Const Seal said writing nasty messages about someone over the internet took away the face-to-face aspect of bullying. “And rumours spread easily on the internet, and it’s harder to track down offenders and know their geographic location.”

He said a lot of it goes unreported. “The problem is a lot of kids are scared to come forward.”
Batemans Bay’s youth liaison officer Senior Constable Gina Hamilton works closely with children in primary schools, and says the vulnerable ages of 10 to 14 were most prone to cyber bullying.
