Edinburgh Council Computer Records Stolen By Hackers

Cyber criminals have stolen records from Edinburgh Council computers. The City of Edinburgh Council revealed on Thursday that its computer records had been attacked by hackers. According to a statement released by the local authority, the hacked files contained "details of customers seeking debt advice", but no other council systems were affected. Lothian and Borders Police and the Information Commissioner have been informed of the incident, which was detected by council maintenance contractors. Cifas, a fraud prevention service, has also been drafted in to deal with the data security breach.
The council said that although there is no evidence to suggest that personal details have been used, it has sent letters to affected customers apologising for the incident.
A council spokesman said: "This is a serious crime that could have potentially damaging consequences if individuals' identities are stolen and used. We have advised people to be vigilant and to check their bank and credit card statements very carefully for unusual transactions."

A dedicated helpline for those affected can be contacted on 0131 529 2180
