Twitter Account of Hacktivist Group Anonymous Hacked By 'Rustle League'

The scenario of hackers targeting another hacker has became a very common matter, in last two years we have seen many instances of the above matter where a hacker hit another hacker's site, community, blog, forums and so on. Today the story which I will about to discuss is the same matter where infamous hacker community named 'Anonymous' fallen victim. A newly formed hacker group calling them selves "Rustle League" targeted one of the officially recognized twitter account (@Anon_Central) belongs to hacktivist group which have more than 160,000 followers. According to security experts  "the reason Anonymous fell victim is probably human weakness." Or in other word many of twitter accounts get hacked due to choosing week passwords. "Chances are that they followed poor password practices, like using the same password in multiple places or choosing a password that was easy to crack. Everyone should learn better password security from incidents like this - if it can happen to an account run by Anonymous supporters, it could happen to you" said another expert of security firm Sophos. The hack on Anonymous twitter account placed Thursday morning and three hours later, those running the feed tweeted that they had gained back control of their account.
While talking about attack on Twitter, we would like to remind you that, in this month a sophisticated cyber attack compromised the security system of the social networking giant twitter, where more than 250,000 twitter users have fallen victim. Security Flaws Allowing Hackers to Brute Force Twitter Passwords

Security Flaws Allowing Hackers to Brute Force Twitter Passwords

A security flaw has been discovered in popular micro blogging site 'Twitter' which is allowing an malicious attack to brute force user's passwords.  On Saturday, multimedia producer and Twitter user Daniel Dennis Jones (@blanket) received a notification that his Twitter password had been reset. This alone would have been cause for concern; at the very least, it would mean that someone had tried and failed to access his account. He quickly found out that the problem was much worse than he expected. He was eventually able to log back into the account, but found that his username had been changed to @FuckMyAssHoleLO , and that @blanket was now operated by someone else. His account, in other words, had clearly been hacked. After seeing the above scenario it is very clear that - Twitter's password reset process allows hackers to attempt a more wide-ranging brute force approach to breaking into accounts than other services with more restrictive systems. Both Apple and Amazon quickly closed the loopholes that led to Honan's hack, but Twitter accounts (the ultimate prize Honan's hackers were after) remain surprisingly vulnerable to unsophisticated hacking efforts. That vulnerability was on display this past weekend as a desirable group of "OG" Twitter handles the short, memorable, one-word names that got snapped up when the service launched were brute-force hacked by a group of kids looking to make a little cash and impress their friends.

Daniel Jones is not the only victim of this recently discovered vulnerability, many other people around the globe also fallen victim of this security hole. After a day of research, Jones "got to the bottom of a little ring of kids who crack passwords to gain access to handles" - he found a number of other short, memorable handles like @hah, @captain, and @craves had also been hacked. Judging from the conversations he saw over Twitter, these hackers were not sophisticated social engineers, but just a group of teenagers trying to sell the names they had collected. Eventually, Jones had a long Skype conversation with a 14-year-old hacker who goes by Mason he wasn't the one who stole @blanket from Jones, but he was part of the young crew grabbing and selling these desirable names.
Of course, Twitter's security regimen is probably not all that different from that of many other sites. According to Jeremiah Grossman, CTO and co-founder of Whitehat Security, the attack that victimized Jones was "very, very common....Perhaps Twitter could have a bit stronger and more comprehensive approach to dealing with brute force attacks, but they can really only take it so far before annoying their users."
We personally think that, after this case twitter should implement two step authentication, like Google to prevent its user getting compromised

USAToday Twitter Account Hacked By Script Kiddies

The Script Kiddies, which is the same group that recently hacked the NBC Twitter account, struck again Sunday evening. The hacker group, which hacked the @USAToday Twitter account late Sunday evening, used the account to send out spiteful messages daring Twitter to block them again. They also asked Twitter users to vote for what account they should hack next in the tweet below:
“Fox News, Wal-mart, Unilevel, Pfizer, NBC and now USA Today. who’s next? Vote Now!”
The Script Kiddies are the lesser-known splinter group of the famous Anonymous hacking group. On the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attack, the Script Kiddies hacked the @NBCNews Twitter account and falsely tweeted that a plane had crashed into ground zero. In addition, in July, they hacked the @FoxNewsPolitics Twitter account and falsely tweeted that President Obama had been assassinated. The FBI
In the past, The Script Kiddies have used a “keylogger Trojan” to access the official Twitter accounts of news organizations. The computer malware is unknowingly installed on the host’s computer and logs the entries a computer user makes and in turn allows the hacker to easily detect passwords. Early evidence points to a high likelihood that the group used the same tactic to gain access to the USA Today Twitter account.
USA Today has worked with Twitter to regain control of their account and recently tweeted:

“@usatoday was hacked and as a result false tweets were sent. We Worked with Twitter to correct it. The account is now back in our control.”

Twitter Hires Renowned Apple Hacker Charlie Miller For Twitter Security Team

Twitter Hires Renowned Apple Hacker Charlie Miller For Twitter Security Team

It is almost impossible task for social networks to keep everything safe against hacks and other vulnerabilities. Hackers will constantly find their way around anything that you put in place. So they often deals with hackers & turn themselves to beef up the security level. Social networking giant Twitter exactly did the same thing. The micro-blogging network has hired the famous/infamous Apple hacker, Charlie Miller, to be a part of its security team. Charlie Miller, a popular figure among hackers, broke the news via his Twitter account, saying, “Monday I start on the security team at Twitter. Looking forward to working with a great team there!” Twitter issued a short statement noting that Miller’s title will be that of Software Engineer, but declined to discuss any further details.
Charlie Miller has a background as a Global Exploitation Analyst in the National Security Agency, and has hacked devices running on iOS, OSX, and Android. He is considered to be a white-hat hacker, which means that he hacks to expose vulnerabilities in a system in order to have those weaknesses fixed. Five year ago, Miller was said to be the first to hack the iPhone using the device’s browser, exposing the handset’s vulnerability to security attacks. Several months after this, he was likewise able to hack a MacBook Air in just two minutes. This feat allowed Miller to win the Pwn2Own hacking competition. Miller also showed a way to hijack iPhones through SMS in 2009. In 2011, he used the MacBook power adapter to implant malware on the laptop. In the same year, his license as an Apple developer got revoked because Apple found that he breached the development agreement.
In more recent times, Miller had been working on Android devices. In June, he was able to overcome Bouncer, Google’s security program. He has furthermore experience in using Near Field Communications to control Samsung and Nokia handsets with a simple wave of another phone that is within the vicinity.
While talking about Charlie Miller, we must have to take another name and that is Nicholas Allegra, the world-famous hacker known as "Comex", creater of JailbreakMe.com; who later has been hired by Apple itself . In case of Twitter we must have to say, apart from Miller, Twitter also hired Moxie Marlinspike, a hacker who specializes in SSL and VPN encryption.

Anonymous Member John Anthony Borell Charged For Hacking into Utah Police & Salt Lake City Police Dept

Anonymous Member John Anthony Borell Charged For Hacking into Utah Police & Salt Lake City Police Dept

FBI successfully tracked the #OpPiggyBank of Anonymous where two hackers from Anonymous named CabinCr3w & ItsKahuna took responsibility of hacking into the database of the Salt Lake City PD and exposed confidential information such as Full name of the Employ, Address, Phone Number, email-id, password hash and so on. According to a report of Huffington Post - An Ohio man linked to the hacker collective "Anonymous" pleaded not guilty Monday to charges of breaching the websites of the Utah Chiefs of Police Association and the Salt Lake City Police Department. John Anthony Borell III took credit for the attacks on Twitter, said FBI officials, who subpoenaed the direct messages the suspect traded with Salt Lake City reporters. The FBI traced Borell's Twitter account to a workplace computer.
"That didn't hurt the investigation, of course, when people make comments like that," FBI agent David Johnson said Monday. Borell appeared with a public defender at federal court in Salt Lake City after being released from a halfway house for the appearance. He faces 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted on two counts of computer intrusion, prosecutors said. FBI agents say they don't know what motivated an Ohio man to tamper with the Utah police websites in January. Prosecutors say Borell intruded on the chiefs' website server Jan. 19, then broke into the police department's website Jan. 31. Salt Lake City police spent $33,000 to repair damage to their website and shore up security, and the hacker was able to access citizen's supposedly confidential crime tips and even some personal information on police officers, Johnson said. Borell was recently arrested after Federal Bureau of Investigations agents found him using Twitter and Internet Relay Chat logs. The investigation was spurred by two tips sent in to tips.fbi.gov and ic3.gov that stated Borell was a member of hacking collective Anonymous. It also provided a number of pseudonyms he was associated with including Kahuna, TehTiger, and anonJB.
The indictment states that Borell used the SQL Injection technique to access and take down the websites utahchiefs.org and slcpd.com (Salt Lake City Police Department). The FBI found Twitter direct messages and tweets in which Borell admitted to taking down the websites. Further proof of his identity was found when the FBI looked through chat logs in IRC. There, Borell explained that his father was an attorney and was advising him against talking to the FBI. Agents searched Ohio-based attorneys and found two local attorneys named “John Anthony Borell Esq.”
We would also like to give you reminder that another member of Anonymous affiliated CabinCr3w named Higinio O. Ochoa III, also get busted after he posted girlfriend's breast photo.

More Than 7000 Law Enforcement Officials’ Private Information Leaked By Anonymous (#Antisec)

More than 77 law enforcement computers were hacked from outside of the United States on Saturday. A hacking group targeted by the FBI is posting the confidential information online. The group intends to do a “rolling release” of information in the days and weeks to come.
The hacking comes on the heels of the arrest of 14 people suspected to be members of the hacking group "Anonymous."
Hackers “AntiSec” and “Anonymous” announced  via Twitter tonight that they absconded with up to 10 Giga Bytes of confidential information, including protected witnesses.  They have posted more than 7,000 law enforcement officials’ private information online including: their social security numbers; email accounts and passwords; phone numbers and home addresses on pastebin
The victims of the hacking were unaware of the breach on Saturday night, according to a law enforcement official in Mo., where some of the victims work. Their information was not secure and their emails were open to anybody who knew where to find the information posted by "Anonymous."
The group is threatening to release additional information at PasteBin in retaliation for FBI arrests of 14 alleged computer hackers in the U.S. and Europe, who are suspected to be members of their group.
Supervisory Special Agent Jason Pack of the FBI press office in Washington declined all comment on the breach. The FBI will be releasing an official statement later.
“Anonymous” is also calling for the release of those arrested and a halt to their prosecutions.
The information due to be posted allegedly includes the identity of “snitches,” according to "Anonymous" and additional information about prisoners and witnesses will be posted.  They claim to have redacted the information about prisoners due to sympathy regarding their incarceration.

Websites that were allegedly defaced by the hacking group were "mirrored" at sites hosted by "Anonymous" so people could view them after they were taken off line by their owners. A mirror site is a snap shot in time of a website. The mirror sites are listed by "Anonymous" on their Twitter accounts.
In their Twitter news account, “AnonymousIRC” the group posted the following notice to the FBI.
“Dear @FBIPressOffice, do you know what happens if these people are convicted? This is no threat as we don't know either. But *we* expect us.”

The Secret Service is Investigating Fox News Twitter Hacking Case

The Secret Service said Monday that it will investigate the recent hacking of the Fox News political Twitter account. Hackers took control of the account on Sunday and used it to tweet fake news of President Obama’s assassination.
Fox News said in a statement that it had alerted the Secret Service of the incident and was told by spokesperson George Ogilvie that the law enforcement agency would do “appropriate follow up.”
Meanwhile, the Think Blog at Stony Brook University said that it had spoken with a representative of the group that claimed to be responsible for the hack, The Script Kiddies. Late Sunday night, the hackers changed the logo of the Fox News account to a Script Kiddies logo and referenced the group, tweeting at the @AnonymousIRC account, for instance, that “TheScriptKiddies would love to assist.” These tweets were removed before the six tweets regarding Obama’s fake assassination were posted on Monday. Several Script Kiddies accounts that bragged about the hack have also been removed. The Secret Service, whose job it is to protect the president, has made it clear that it doesn’t take talk of the president’s assassination lightly, even on social networks. When a Facebook poll asked “Should Obama be killed?” in 2009, the Secret Service tracked its source to a juvenile (no charges were filed). Similarly, two Twitter accounts that tweeted “ASSASSINATION! America, we survived the Assassinations and Lincoln & Kennedy. We’ll surely get over a bullet to Barrack Obama’s head” and “You Should be Assassinated!! @Barack Obama” after the healthcare reform vote last year both inspired Secret Service investigations.

Anonymous Released A New Twitter Tool Named URGE (Universal Rapid Gamma Emitter)

The Anonymous group of online activists released a new tool today designed to allow people to hijack trending topics on Twitter and tweet messages within them. The name of the tool is URGE (for Universal Rapid Gamma Emitter), the beta software is available for download for Windows computers and requires .Net Framework 4 to work.

According to the official Press Release of Anonymous:-
We recently have become tired of seeing trending topics on twitter that were redundant and “pop culture” like.  We have also grown tired of Twitter not trending hash tags that actually serve a cause and mean something to free thinkers of the world.  We have taken note of why Twitter would not do so, they only trend topics which would “appeal” to people and can get people to tweet more.  This was pathetic in our eyes, and we could not stand by and take it anymore.  We have developed a program called “U.R.G.E. Universal Rapid Gamma Emitter (twitter edition)” which hijacks trending topics of our choice and and lets us tweet messages within them.  This will help raise awareness of problems going on in this world and show people that real problems exist outside of “Jersey Shore” and “Sex”.  We will distribute this program amongst Anonymous and anyone else who cares to use this for awareness and bashing corrupt politicians.  This is not a hacking tool nor is it an exploit tool, it was created to make it easier for us to tweet faster without copying and pasting constantly.

Federal Judge Opened The Gate For 14 Anonymous Members To Use Twitter

Federal Judge Opened The Gate For 14 Anonymous Members To Use Twitter Freely

A Federal judge in San Jose, Calif. Has opened the gates for 14 alleged members of anonymous to continue using Twitter as one of the "principle tools through which the members of the Anonymous hacking group planned and coordinated their criminal activities," according to prosecutors opposing the decision. The first question came up in January as a motion from Vincent Kershaw, indicted along with 13 other alleged Anon members for attacking PayPal following the arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
Kershaw could have simply argued that preventing him from Tweeting about issues having nothing to do with his legal situation or the charges against him was a violation of his First Amendment right to free speech. Even in court, where current events, fashions and politics are supposed to be banished from legal decisions, requests go over much more easily when they hit the issues that are big today rather than when the Constitution was written.
Despite arguments that the dangerous, subversive hackers of Anonymous use the overly public Twitter to plan their misdeeds, Judge Paul Grewal ruled prosecutors hadn't sufficiently linked specific Twitter accounts to their assumption that every key-press by an Anonymous sympathizer was necessarily a felony or act of treason.
Therefore Kershaw and his fellow defendants are free to Tweet themselves or participate in Twitter Town Halls and other online events. They're not allowed to use IRC, however, which Anonymous actually does use to plan and coordinate its various activities, not to mention gossip about each other, engage in private flame wars that break out into public doxings, swap files, swap pictures and do all the other social things people do online, especially when their physical liberty is limited.
Kershaw is a 28-year-old foreman for a Colorado landscaping company, was arrested along with 15 others for a DDOS attack the DoJ charges they participated in and which was organized by Anonymous. He was released July 2 on a bond of $10,000 on condition he not access the Internet from any computer and that he allow a probation officer to verify he had not done so.
