The RHEL 6x series get another important update as Red Hat Inc, the world's leading provider of open source solutions announced the general availability of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5, the latest version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6. Securing the Next-Generation Enterprise
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5 continues the push for integrated security functionality that combines ease-of-use and up-to-date security standards into the platform. The addition of a centralized certificate trust store enables standardized certificate access for security services. Also included are tools that meet leading security standards, including OpenSCAP 2.1, which implements the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST’s) Security Content Automation Protocol (SCAP) 1.2 standard. With these additions, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 provides a secure platform upon which to build mission-critical services and applications.

Networking – When Every (Micro)Second Matters
In the financial services and trading-related industries, application latency is measured in microseconds, not seconds. Now, the latest version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 fully supports sub-microsecond clock accuracy over the local area network (LAN) using the Precision Time Protocol (PTP). Precision time synchronization is a key enabler for delivering better performance for high-speed, low latency applications. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5 can now be used to track time on trading transactions, improving time stamp accuracy on archived data or precisely synchronizing time locally or globally. Thanks to other networking enhancements in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5, system administrators now have a more comprehensive view of network activity. These new capabilities enable sysadmins to inspect IGMP (Internet Group Management Protocol) data to list multicast router ports, multicast groups with active subscribers and their associated interfaces, all of which are important to many modern networking scenarios, including streaming media.

Virtualization Enhancements
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5 continues Red Hat’s commitment to improving the overall virtualization experience and includes several improvements that make it a compelling choice for running in virtualized environments. Sysadmins can now dynamically enable or disable virtual processors (vCPUs) in active guests, making it an ideal choice for elastic workloads. The handling of memory intensive applications as Red Hat Enterprise Linux guests has also been improved, with configurations supported for up to 4TB of memory on the Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) hypervisor. The KVM hypervisor also integrates with GlusterFS volumes to provide direct access to the distributed storage platform, improving performance when accessing Red Hat Storage or GlusterFS volumes. Finally, guest drivers have been updated to improve performance of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5 running as a guest on supported third-party hypervisors.

Evolving Ease-of-Use, Storage, and More
As application deployment options grow, portability becomes increasingly important. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5 enables customers to deploy application images in containers created using Docker in their environment of choice: physical, virtual, or cloud. Docker is an open source project to package and run lightweight, self-sufficient containers; containers save developers time by eliminating integration and infrastructure design tasks. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5 stays current with the advancements in Solid-State Drive (SSD) controller interface, introducing support for NVM Express (NVMe)-based SSDs. The NVMe specification aims to standardize the interface for PCIe-based SSDs and its inclusion in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5 positions the platform to support an expanding range of future NVMe-based devices.

Improvements have also been added to improve enterprise storage scalability within Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5. It is now possible to configure more than 255 LUNs connected to a single iSCSI target. In addition, control and recovery from SAN for iSCSI and Fibre Channel has been enhanced, and updates to the kexec/kdump mechanism now make it possible to create debug (dump) files on systems configured with very large memory (e.g. 6TB).

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5 makes it easier to track and manage subscription consumption across the enterprise, integrating subscription tracking into existing business workflow. Usability enhancements include support for remote access to Windows clients and servers that use a newer version of the RDP protocol, including Windows 7 and 8 desktops and Windows Server 2012.

Earlier we have talked many times on Linux Mint, it is one of most modern, elegant and comfortable operating system based on Ubuntu or Debian which is both powerful and easy to use. The Linux Mint project has started  in 2006, since then the consistent effort of it's developers and contributors has made Linux Mint the 4th most widely used home operating system behind Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS and Canonical's Ubuntu. As promised from beginning the mint team used to release their new version in every six months. The last we got was Linux Mint 15 'Olivia'. Again also the team proudly to announced the release of Linux Mint 16 code named "Petra". There's been quite a lot of anticipation for the next version of Linux Mint, and as expected the result is indeed satisfactory. SQL Injection Vulnerability Affected All Versions of Ruby on Rails (CVE-2012-5664)

Developers at Ruby on Rails are warning its users regarding a Sql Injection flaws which has affected all the current version of Ruby on Rails web framework. While exploiting the vulnerability an attacker can inject and even execute malicious codes into the web application. "Due to the way dynamic finders in Active Record extract options from method parameters, a method parameter can mistakenly be used as a scope. Carefully crafted requests can use the scope to inject arbitrary SQL," explained the Rails framework's developers. As soon as this vulnerability has been spotted in the wild, the maintainers of Ruby on Rails have released new versions that addresses the flaw, versions 3.2.10, 3.1.9 and 3.0.18. In their advisory Ruby on Rails team recommends that users running affected versions, which is essentially anyone using Ruby on Rails, upgrade immediately to one of the fixed versions mentioned earlier. "We're sorry to drop a release like this so close to the holidays but regrettably the exploit has already been publicly disclosed and we don't feel we can delay the release," Rails developer concluded. 

The original problem was disclosed on the Phenoelit blog in late December where the author applied the technique to extract user credentials from a Ruby on Rails system, circumventing the authlogic authentication framework. While talking about the vulnerability discloser of Ruby on Rails, we would like to remind you that, this is not the first time, earlier in 2012 a Russian security researcher named Homakov has found that Github has succumbed to a public key vulnerability in Ruby on Rails which is allowing a normal user to gain administrator access into the popular Rails Git.

Ruby on Rails runs on the general-purpose programming language Ruby, which predates it by more than a decade. Rails is a full-stack framework, meaning that it gives the web developer the ability to gather information from the web server, talk to or query the database, and render templates out of the box. As a result, Rails features a routing system that is independent of the web server. Ruby on Rails emphasizes the use of well-known software engineering patterns and principles, such as Active record pattern, Convention over Configuration, Don't Repeat Yourself and Model-View-Controller.

Red Hat the global leader in open source solutions released another update of its enterprise Linux (RHEL Version 6). Since Red Hat Enterprise Linux has been released, we have got several updates, including three beta release and three final release (RHEL 6.1, RHEL 6.2 & RHEL 6.3). Now the American software company added another beta, that is RHEL 6.4 and made it available for its customers. The beta release includes a broad set of updates to the existing feature set and provides rich new functionality in the areas of identity management, file system, virtualization, and storage as well as productivity tools. In their release note the RHEL Team said that -through collaboration with partners, customers and the open source community, we are committed to delivering technology that is tested and stable – including in the beta phase of development. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4 demonstrates this commitment and has been designed for optimized performance, stability and flexibility to cater to today’s diverse workloads running in physical, virtual and cloud environments.

Key New Features & Enhancement :-
  • Identity Management
System Security Services Daemon (SSSD) enhancements improve the interoperability experience with [Microsoft Active Directory] by providing centralized identity access control for Linux/Unix clients in a heterogeneous environment.

  • File system
pNFS (Parallel NFS) client (file layout only) remains in technology preview, however now delivers performance improvements with the addition of Direct I/O for faster data access. This drives particular performance benefits for I/O intensive use cases including database workloads.

  • Virtualization

Enhancement in c-groups delivers the ability to migrate multi-threaded applications without errors.
Optimized perf tool for the latest Intel processors

  • Storage
New system log features identify mapping from block device name to physical device identifier – allowing an administrator to easily locate specific devices as needed.

  • Productivity Tools
Microsoft interoperability improvements with Microsoft Exchange and calendar support in Evolution. Productivity functions, such as calendar support with alarm notification and meeting scheduling is improved.
Customers such as animation studios and graphic design houses now have support for the newer Wacom tablets.

Nmap 6.25 Released! With 85 New Scripts, Windows 8 Enhancements & Better Performance

Gordon Lyon also known as Fyodor, the author of world's most popular security scanner 'Nmap' announced another update. Almost after five months we got this new version that is Nmap 6.25. This release of Nmap  contains hundreds of improvements, including 85 new NSE scripts, nearly 1,000 new OS and service detection fingerprints, performance enhancements such as the new kqueue and poll I/O engines, better IPv6 traceroute support, Windows 8 improvements, and much more!  It also includes the work of five Google Summer of Code interns who worked full time with Nmap mentors during the summer. 

Here are the most important change since 6.01:
  • Integrated all of your IPv4 OS fingerprint submissions since January (more than 3,000 of them).  Added 373 fingerprints, bringing the new total to 3,946.  Additions include Linux 3.6, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, Mac OS X 10.8, and a ton of new WAPs, printers, routers, and other devices--including our first IP-enabled doorbell! Many existing fingerprints were improved.
  • Integrated all of your service/version detection fingerprints submitted since January (more than 1,500)!  Our signature count jumped by more than 400 to 8,645.  We now detect 897 protocols, from extremely popular ones like http, ssh, smtp and imap to the more obscure airdroid, gopher-proxy, and enemyterritory. 
  • Integrated your latest IPv6 OS submissions and corrections. We're still low on IPv6 fingerprints, so please scan any IPv6 systems you own or administer and submit them to http://nmap.org/submit/.  Both new fingerprints (if Nmap doesn't find a good match) and corrections (if Nmap guesses wrong) are useful.
  • Enabled support for IPv6 traceroute using UDP, SCTP, and IPProto(Next Header) probes. 
  • Scripts can now return a structured name-value table so that results are query-able from XML output. Scripts can return a string as before, or a table, or a table and a string. In this last case, the table will go to XML output and the string will go to screen output. See http://nmap.org/book/nse-api.html#nse-structured-output 
  • [Nsock] Added new poll and kqueue I/O engines for improved performance on Windows and BSD-based systems including Mac OS X. These are in addition to the epoll engine (used on Linux) and the classic select engine fallback for other system.  
  • [Ncat] Added support for Unix domain sockets. The new -U and --unixsock options activate this mode.  These provide compatibility with Hobbit's original Netcat. 
  • Moved some Windows dependencies, including OpenSSL, libsvn, and the vcredist files, into a new public Subversion directory /nmap-mswin32-aux and moved it out of the source tarball. This reduces the compressed tarball size from 22 MB to 8 MB and similarly reduces the bandwidth and storage required for an svn checkout.
  • [NSE] Replaced old RPC grinder (RPC enumeration, performed as part of version detection when a port seems to run a SunRPC service) with a faster and easier to maintain NSE-based implementation. This also allowed us to remove the crufty old pos_scan scan engine.

German hackers group, widely known as THC -The Hacker's Choice released an comprehensive attack toolkit for the IPv6 protocol suite named 'THC-IPv6 Attack Toolkit'. THC is the first group who is releasing such attacking tool for IPv6 protocol. According to the release note this is  a complete tool set to attack the inherent protocol weaknesses of IPV6 and ICMP6, and includes an easy to use packet factory library. It comprises of state-of-the-art tools for alive scanning, man-in-the-middle attacks, denial-of-service etc. which exploits inherent vulnerabilities in IPv6.

  • parasite6: icmp neighbor solitication/advertisement spoofer, puts you as man-in-the-middle, same as ARP mitm (and parasite)
  • alive6: an effective alive scanng, which will detect all systems listening to this address

  • smurf6: local smurfer
  • rsmurf6: remote smurfer, known to work only against linux at the moment
  • sendpees6: a tool by willdamn(ad)gmail.com, which generates a neighbor solicitation requests with a lot of CGAs (crypto stuff ;-) to keep the CPU busy. nice.
  • thcping6: sends a hand crafted ping6 packet [and about 25 more tools for you to discover]

Earlier we have discussed several times about Nessus, a proprietary comprehensive vulnerability scanning tool. After almost six months, yet again Tenable Network Security officially announced the availability of Nessus 5.0.2. According to surveys done by sectools.org, Nessus is the world's most popular vulnerability scanner, taking first place in the 2000, 2003, and 2006 security tools survey. Tenable estimates that it is used by over 75,000 organizations worldwide. This update is largely a bugfix release, however a new build for Solaris 10 is now available. The major issues addressed in 5.0.2 include enhanced support for UTF8 encoding problems in reports and the detection of network congestion errors during scans more conservatively. 

Official Change Log for Nessus 5.0.2:- 
  • UTF8 encoding problems would sometimes cause the generation of reports to fail 
  • Fixed a case where generating some compliance checks reports would cause the scanner to hang, using 100% of the CPU 
  • Resolved a resource leak issue occurring when a large number of different users are connected at the same time 
  • Network congestion errors are now detected more conservatively 
  • Upgraded libxml2, libxslt, openssl to their newest versions 
  • Some nessusd.rules directives were not honored by the port scanners 
  • Solaris 10 build
Other fixes:-
  • Smarter max_hosts and global.max_hosts defaults
  • Added support for named virtual hosts for IPv6
  • Fixed a memory leak when mixing IPv4 and IPv6 targets
  • Fixed the systemd control script (Fedora 16)
  • Fixed a crash in nessus-mkcert on the command-line (Win32)
  • Fixed a crash in localtime(), when passed an invalid argument (Win32)
  • Fixed scratchpad_query() to allow NULL arguments
  • PSSDK fix (Win32)

GNOME 3.6 Released! Includes Number of New Features & Enhancements

The developers at GNOME Project officially declared the general availability of GNOME 3.6, the third major update to the 3.x series. This latest version of GNOME 3 includes a number of new features and enhancements, as well as many bug fixes and minor improvements. Together, they represent a significant upgrade to the GNOME 3 user experience. 

Highlights for this release include:
  • Big improvements to notifications, including a redesigned Message Tray, smarter notifications, and other tweaks and refinements.
  • An enhanced Activities Overview with an improved layout.
  • A greatly enhanced Files application, with functional file search, a new Recent location, redesigned interface and lots of bug fixes and handy new features.
  • Integrated Input Sources, which makes inputting different character sets (eg. Japanese or Chinese) fast and easy.
  • Accessibility on demand, meaning that universal access features like the Orca screen reader can be enabled with the push of a button.
  • A new Lock Screen. This provides an attractive view when the device is locked, plus handy functionality like media controls and notifications.
There are many other enhancements in GNOME 3.6, including Online Accounts support for Microsoft Exchange, Facebook and Windows Live, much improved System Settings and a redesigned User Menu. Many GNOME applications have also received improvements, including Web, Empathy, Disk Usage Analyzer, Disks and the Font Viewer. This release also includes the first major release of Boxes, an application for using remote systems and virtual machines, and a development preview of the new Clocks application. You can read about all the changes included in GNOME 3.6 in the release notes. Twitter Joins The Linux Foundation as A Silver Member

Social networking giant Twitter joined The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization while dedicated to accelerate the growth of Linux & open-source. In addition to Twitter, the Linux Foundation also announced that Inktank and Servergy have also become members. Twitter joined as a silver member, paying $15,000 for the privilege. The Linux Foundation announced Twitter’s membership today as it gears up for next week’s annual LinuxCon conference in San Diego. “Linux and its ability to be heavily tweaked is fundamental to our technology infrastructure,” said Chris Aniszczyk, manager of open source at Twitter, in a statement. “By joining The Linux Foundation, we can support an organization that is important to us and collaborate with a community that is advancing Linux as fast as we are improving Twitter.”
Twitter is a real-time information service on which people post ideas, comments and news in 140 characters or less. Twitter brings users closer to the topics, events and people they care most about around the world. Based in San Francisco, Twitter is available worldwide in 30 languages, with 140 million active users and 400 million Tweets per day. This volume of data puts high demands on real-time data processing and the pace of innovation at the company. Twitter is supported by tens of thousands of Linux machines, which allow the company to customize for its unique needs. Twitter is joining The Linux Foundation to support the mission of promoting, protecting and advancing Linux, the company said. Twitter’s Chris Aniszczyk will deliver a keynote at LinuxCon on Aug. 30 entitled “The OSS Behind a Tweet.” 
Google, Yahoo is another big Web company that is part of the foundation. One missing name is Facebook, but Zemlin hopes to get Mark Zuckerberg and team on board as well. "We would love to have them as a member," Zemlin said. "They do participate in our events around the Open Compute Project so that’s a good thing. Their business runs on Linux as well."

KDE 4.9 Released With Improved Stability & Performance

Earlier in January we got KDE 4.8, so after eight moths of wait now the KDE Developers team has announced its latest set of releases, providing major updates to KDE Plasma Workspaces, KDE Applications, and the KDE Platform. Version 4.9 provides many new features, along with improved stability and performance. This release is dedicated to the memory of KDE contributor Claire Lotion. Claire's vibrant personality and enthusiasm were an inspiration to many in many opensource community, and her pioneering work on the format. The KDE Quality Team was set up earlier this year with a goal to improve the general levels of quality and stability in KDE software. Special attention was given to identifying and fixing regressions from previous releases. This was a top priority because it ensures improvement with each release. As a result of the efforts of the KDE Quality Team, the 4.9 Releases are the best ever.
One particular bugfix deserves special attention. An Okular bug reported in 2007 had gotten nearly 1100 votes; it was important to many users. They complained about making annotations and not being able to save or print them. With the assistance of many commenters and people on the Okular IRC channel, Fabio D’Urso implemented a solution that allows Okular PDF document annotations to be saved and printed. The fix required some work on KDE libraries and attention to overall design to ensure that non-PDF documents worked right. 

The most notable include:-
  • The Dolphin file manager includes back and forward buttons, inline file renaming, and the ability to show metadata like ratings, tags, image size, file size, date, and more. You can also sort files by these metadata properties, which is awesome. It also includes a better Places panel, improved search, and better integration with the Terminal.
  • The Konsole terminal now includes the ability to change directory when you drag and drop a folder into the window, detach tabs by dragging them out of the window, and more.
  • Activities, the feature that helps you separate your work from your play, is now a bit more powerful, letting you link certain files to each workspace. You can also encrypt certain activities for more private work.
  • The KWin window manager now has better performance all around, as well as a few improvements here and there with certain effects like Wobby Windows.
