Sony is Going to Release "PlayStation Vita" (Portable Video Game Player)

Sony is planning to release the PlayStation Vita, a portable video game player, on February 22, 2012, in the United States, Canada and Europe, the company announced at a technology conference on Tuesday.
The Vita will succeed the PlayStation Portable, or PSP, and PlayStation Go, a smaller version of the hand-held device. The Vita has a touchscreen and a touch-sensitive pad on the back of the device, along with the buttons and control sticks gamers expect to see on controllers.
Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Jack Tretton and a Sony spokesman demonstrated a sequel to a popular PlayStation 3 game called "Uncharted: Golden Abyss." Players can use the standard controller or manipulate the character using touch controls, as the spokesman showed onstage at the Web 2.0 Summit. The game looks very attractive -- but when shown on the big screen, not as sharp as a console game.
Sony previously announced pricing for the Vita, with a version that connects to the Web via Wi-Fi costing $250 and another that has 3G wireless data connectivity for $300.
Nintendo made deep price cuts to its portable 3DS system just five months after a strong launch when sales began to slow.
Analysts expect Sony will struggle to sell consumers a dedicated hand-held game machine now that smartphones and tablets have become powerful enough to handle powerful games.
"The advent of smartphone gaming is quite additive to what we're trying to accomplish," Tretton said. People may look to the Vita when they want to graduate from more simplistic games sold on phones, he said.
The Vita will first hit stores on December 17 in Japan, where Sony's portable systems have fared better.

Apple releases iOS 5 beta 3

Apple on Monday released a new build of its iOS 5 beta software to developers. The new build — iOS 5 beta 3 — is available for all applicable iOS devices including the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, iPad, Apple TV, and third and fourth-generation iPod touch devices. Apple also released the third beta of iTunes 10.5 alongside the new iOS release of course, and it will be necessary for developers to install iTunes 10.5 beta 3 in order to load the new iOS beta on their devices. Hit the break for the full change log included with this release.

Notes and Known Issues

The following issues relate to using the 5.0 SDK to develop code.

Accounts

  • When creating an iCloud account you can use any Apple ID provided it is a full email address and not a MobileMe account. If you have a MobileMe account, you can copy data from that account to an iCloud account to use during testing. You can find more information on iCloud at: http://developer.apple.com/icloud
  • When setting up an iCloud or MobileMe account using the setup assistant and leaving Find My iPhone on, it might actually turn Find my iPhone off after the setup. Please verify in Settings/Mail, Contacts, Calendar/YourAccount that Find my iPhone is toggled On after leaving the setup assistant.
  • There is a problem finding a device using Find My iPhone on the MobileMe website (www.me.com) when switching from iCloud back to MobileMe. To workaround this issue:
    • On the device go to Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendar-><your_account>@me.com and Toggle Find My iPhone off and back on. Now the device should show up on MobileMe website.
  • It is recommended that you disable Bookmarks on multiple accounts. If they are enabled, the results might be undefined.
  • NEW: In this beta the option of “Choosing a security question” is not working during an iCloud account setup.

Air Play

  • Starting in iOS 5, video content in applications and websites are AirPlay-enabled by default.
  • iOS 5 supports AirPlay of video via AV Foundation.
  • FIXED: The Apple TV screen saver may degrade mirroring performance over AirPlay. The screen saver can be disabled in Apple TV settings.

Apple TV

  • Apple TV Software beta enables users to mirror the contents of an iPad 2 to an Apple TV (2nd generation) using AirPlay. This beta software also enables Photo Stream on Apple TV so users can access photos stored in iCloud. Apple TV Software beta is being provided to test the latest AirPlay functionality with your iOS 5 apps and web sites. If you wish to install Apple TV Software beta on your device, you must first register your device UDID in the iOS Developer Program Portal.

Audio

  • Using voice chat in iOS 5 requires setting the kAudioSessionMode_VoiceChat mode on the Audio Session, or setting the AVAudioSessionModeVoiceChat mode on the AVAudioSession object.

CalDav

  • FIXED: After creating a recurring event locally on the device, the device stops syncing after hitting an error on merge. Removing and re-adding the account acts as a workaround for this.

Calendar

  • All MobileMe calendars were duplicated after turning calendar syncing off and back on.
  • If you launch or manually refresh Calendars on an iPad, your calendars might disappear and you will have to tap “Show All Calendars” to display them again.
  • NEW: Restoring from a Seed 1 backup or earlier will cause MobileMe/iCloud calendars not to sync. Subscribed calendars will show up in Calendars but none of your event calendars will appear in MobileCal. To workaround the problem please remove and re-add the account.

Game Kit

  • Match data for turn based matches is currently limited to 4 KB of data.

Game Center

  • If you have an existing Game Center account which has not yet gone through the first-time Game Center flow in iOS 5, you will encounter a crash when signing into a game’s login alert directly. The workaround for this is to launch Game Center to complete the first-time flow.

i-Books

  • iBooks 1.2.2 may fail to display some text or images in books. Please update to iBooks 1.3 in the App Store.

i-Cloud Backup

  • As this is beta software, it is recommended that you do not use the iCloud services to store any critical data or information. If you enable iCloud Backup, automatic backup with iTunes when syncing will be disabled. We suggest you also manually back up your device with iTunes.
  • In the iOS 5 beta, support for data protection in iCloud Backup is unavailable. Apps that have protected files will not have any of their data or metadata backed up as a result.
  • After restoring, you may not be able to back up again because the device still thinks it’s restoring. To workaround this issue try syncing apps or media that are missing form iTunes or try deleting your iCloud account and adding it back.
  • If you delete your backup, the feature will be disabled but settings may still indicate that it is enabled and you will have to toggle the BackUp to Cloud switch in Settings.
  • For compatibility reasons, this version of the iOS 5 beta requires that all files be backed up again, instead of only those files that have changed since your last backup. This may cause a warning that your account is over quota. In case the warning occurs, you can delete your oldest backup to free up space and then initiate a backup.

i-Cloud Storage

  • During the iOS 5 beta period, any documents stored on the servers might be purged periodically before GM. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you do not store any critical documents or information on the servers.
  • If your application is using the NSMetadataQuery class, you must set a predicate, even though the predicate itself is ignored.
  • The Foundation framework doesn’t include the team ID when looking for an app’s mobile documents container. The Team ID must be included at the beginning of the identifier string passed to theURLForUbiquityContainerIdentifier: method.
  • In this beta, the setSortDescriptors: method of NSMetadataQuery is not supported.
  • In this beta, if you want to use iCloud, you have to manually specify various container identifiers (your application’s Display set) within an Entitlements file for both of your Mac OS X and iOS projects.
  • There are issues using the Cloud Storage document API in conjunction with protected data which can lead to data corruption.
  • In this beta, document-based applications cannot always detect when files change, move, or are deleted out from underneath them.
  • NEW: In this beta, file presenters (objects that adopt the NSFilePresenter protocol) do not receive some of the messages that they’re supposed to receive, especially:
    • presentedItemDidChange
    • presentedSubitemDidAppearAtURL:
    • presentedSubitemDidChangeAtURL:
You can workaround this by implementing the relinquishPresentedItemToWriter: method and checking to see if the writer actually wrote when your file presenter reacquires. You can also use FSEvents to observe file system changes
  • In this beta, messages about changes to files in a directory are not getting delivered to objects that adopt the NSFilePresenter protocol.
  • While reporting a bug related to the iCloud storage interfaces, please include the logs collected during your debugging session. To generate these logs, you must install a special debug profile on your device. The debug profile can be obtained from http://connect.apple.com. This profile enables the generation of debug logs that are needed to diagnose any problems using iCloud storage. The instructions to collect the logs are:
    1. Install the profile. (The easiest way to do this is to mail it to yourself and open the attachment on their device.)
    2. Reproduce the bug.
    3. Sync with iTunes to pull the logs off your device.
    4. Attach the logs to your bug report. You can find the logs in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/DeviceName/DiagnosticLogs.
These logs can grow large very quickly, so you should remove the profile after you have reproduced the problem and pulled the logs for the bug report.

i-Message

  • NEW: i-Message beta 3 will be unable to communicate with iMessage users on beta 1. It works between beta 3 and beta 2.
  • NEW: Modal alerts don’t appear for iMessages.

iTunes

  • The version of iTunes that comes with beta 3 cannot sync devices that have the beta 2 software installed. To avoid this problem, do the following:
    1. Sync any devices that have beta 2 installed to the version of iTunes that came with beta 2.
    2. Upgrade iTunes to the version that comes with beta 3.
    3. Connect the device and install the beta 3 software. (Understand that you might see a failure to sync error when you first connect the device.)
    4. After installing the beta 3 software, restore from your the backup you made in step 1.
  • Videos purchased from the iTunes Store do not play on a 2nd generation AppleTV over AirPlay with iTunes 10.5.

MMS

  • Sending an MMS of large videos does not work.

Photo Adjustments

  • If you apply red-eye adjustments in iOS, and import your image into the iPhoto seed build, the red-eye adjustments will not appear on that image in iPhoto. As a result, subsequent syncing of your image back to the iOS device from iPhoto will not show the red-eye adjustments.

Reminders

FIXED: The Reminders application does not send notifications for reminders that are based upon the entry (and/or exit) of a location if there is no date associated with the reminder.

Settings

  • The “Back Up Now” button is enabled without the backup data class being enabled for the account.
  • FIXED: If you bring up the keyboard of the terms in Settings->General->Software Update, you cannot dismiss it. You have to force quit Settings to get out.
  • NEW: In this beta FaceTime icon is missing in Settings on the iPhones.

Simulator

  • NEW: Location services are not functional in iOS 4.3 simulator running on Mac OS 10.7 with Xcode 4.2.

Springboard

  • Push and local notifications for apps appear in the new Notification Center in iOS 5. Notification Center displays notifications that are considered “unread”. In order to accommodate push and local notifications that have no “unread” status, developers can use their application badge count to trigger a clearing of notifications from Notification Center. When an application clears its badge count (by setting it to zero), iOS 5 will clear its notifications from Notification Center.

Twitter

  • NEW: When tweeting your location from Safari and exiting before the location can be established, the location arrow will stay in the status bar. The arrow can be removed by killing Safari from the task switcher.

UI Automation

  • NEW: In iOS 5 beta 3, the first execution of a script after a reboot or erase install will likely fail. Subsequent attempts should succeed until the device is rebooted again.
  • The play and record buttons in the Automation instrument script editor may not work properly after targeting an application that was launched by a trace session and has ended. They may also not work if you target an application that was suspended. If you run into this problem and it persists, you may need to close and reopen the trace document to get back into a functional state.
  • When capturing actions into a script using the Automation instrument, interfaces with web views or table cells that contain a high number of off screen elements may take an extremely long time before returning with an expression.
  • The lock() and unlock() functions of UIATarget have been replaced with the lockForDuration(<seconds>) function.
  • Instruments overwrites the loaded automation script, even if another program is editing it.
  • Starting iOS 5 beta 2, you can now trigger the execution of an UI Automation script on an iOS device from the host terminal by using the instruments tool. The command is:
    • instruments -w <device id> -t <template> <application>

UIKit

  • NEW: Starting in iOS 5 beta 3, the exclusiveTouch property of UIControl has returned to its original default value of NO.
  • Returning nil from the tableView:viewForHeaderInSection: method (or its footer equivalent) is no longer sufficient to hide a header. You must override tableView:heightForHeaderInSection: and return0.0 to hide a header.
  • In the iOS 5 beta, the UITableView class has two methods to move one cell from one row to another with defined parameters. These APIs are:
    • moveSection:toSection:
    • moveRowAtIndexPath:toIndexPath:
  • Using the UIWebView class in Interface Builder, setting transparent background color is possible in iOS 5. Developers compiling against the new SDK can check their XIB for the UIWebView transparent setting.
  • In the iOS 5 beta, the UINavigationBarUIToolbar, and UITabBar implementations have changed so that the drawRect: method is not called on instances of these classes unless it is implemented in a subclass. Apps that have re-implemented drawRect: in a category on any of these classes will find that the drawRect: method isn’t called. UIKit does link-checking to keep the method from being called in apps linked before iOS 5 but does not support this design on iOS 5 or later. Apps can either:
    • Use the customization API for bars that in iOS 5 and later, which is the preferred way.
    • Subclass UINavigationBar (or the other bar classes) and override drawRect: in the subclass.
  • The indexPathForRow:inSection:section, and row methods of NSIndexPath now use NSInteger instead of NSUInteger, so that these types match with methods defined on UITableView.
  • There is a known issue with presenting a UIVideoEditorControllerobject where it doesn’t show the selected video, which appears blank instead. In certain cases it may also crash.
  • Touch events are not getting forwarded to the view in the cameraOverlayView property of UIImagePickerController.
  • The imagePickerController:didFinishPickingMediaWithInfo: method of UIImagePickerController is not returning a URL to the video when recording is complete.
  • NEW: When creating a new appointment in calendar app on a device using 24 hr clock, you cannot select an hour value greater than 12. The date-time picker value sets current weekday to be the same as previous day (e.g: a An appointment on Tuesday will be set as Monday).
  • FIXED: We have changed the behavior of scrollToRowAtIndexPath:atScrollPosition:animated: such that UITableViewScrollPositionTop and UITableViewScrollPositionBottom now adjust for the top and bottom portions of the contentInset property.

WebKit

  • NEW: In iOS 5 beta 2, a new inherited CSS property, -webkit-overflow-scrolling: value, is available. The value touch allows the web developer to opt in to native-style scrolling in an overflow:scrollelement. The default value for this property is auto.
  • The WebKit framework has picked up a newer WebKit engine, which closely matches Safari 5.1. Some areas to be aware of with the new WebKit framework on iOS:
    • There is a new HTML5-compliant parser.
    • Text layout width may change slightly because word-rounding behavior now has floating-point-based precision.
    • There is improved validation of the <input type=number> form field, which includes removing leading zeros and number formatting.
    • Touch events are now supported on input fields.
    • window.onerror is now supported.
    • There is a new user agent that does not have locale information in the User Agent string.

WiFi Syncing

  • In iOS 5 beta 2, wireless syncing is available for the Mac. It requires iTunes 10.5 beta 2 and OS X 10.6.8 or Lion. You will see an option to enable wireless syncing when you connect your device to iTunes with the USB cable. It is recommended you perform your initial sync with a cable after restoring your device.
    • Wireless syncing is triggered automatically when the device is connected to power and on the same network as the paired computer. Or, you can manually trigger a sync from iTunes or from Settings -> General -> iTunes Sync (same network as paired computer required). Be sure your device is plugged into a power source when performing wireless syncs.
    • If you find issues with apps, media and/or photos synced to your device, you can reset then resync. From Settings -> General -> Reset, choose Erase all Content and Settings. Then reconnect to iTunes and sync again.
  • FIXED: In this beta, iTunes may incorrectly report Photos as “Other” in the capacity bar. Photo syncing otherwise works as expected.
  • NEW:In some cases, your device may fail to sync contacts, calendars and account settings, or back up to iTunes. If this happens, reboot your device and re-sync.
  • NEW:In some cases, syncing photos may result in only thumbnails on your device. If this happens, unsync Photos then re-sync again.

Xcode

  • In this beta, device restores using XCode are disabled. Please use iTunes only to back up and restore your device.
  • In some cases, Xcode 4.2 Organizer does not display a device that is in restore mode. As a workaround you can use iTunes to restore.
  • FIXED: On some desktop machines, Xcode’s memory usage inflates incredibly fast while restoring a device or copying an IPSW. As a workaround use iTunes to restore.
  • FIXED: In this beta, crash logs (either unsymbolicated or symbolicated) do not appear in Xcode Organizer. To make them appear in the Xcode Organizer, you will have to rename the device.
  • In iOS 5 beta 2, the iOS Simulator is not compatible with previous releases of the iCloud Developer Seed for OS X. It is highly recommended that you update to the latest iCloud Developer Seed to ensure compatibility.
iOS 5.0 SDK supports both iOS 4.3 and iOS 5.0 simulators.

Hacking and piracy group Razor1911 has reportedly enabled PC copies of Battlefield 3 to play online while bypassing EA's Origin service. In A Statement Razor 1911 Said:-
 "Game Notes
 ~~~~~~~~~~
 As bullets whiz by, walls crumble, and explosions throw you to the ground,
 the battlefield feels more alive and interactive than ever before. In
 Battlefield 3, players step into the role of the elite U.S. Marines where
 they will experience heart-pounding single player missions and competitive
 multiplayer actions ranging across diverse locations from around the globe
 including Europe, Middle-East and North America.
 Notes
 ~~~~~
Razor1911 doesn't accept and support the online DRM "Origin" from EA.
This release is dedicated to our fans worldwide who bought this game on
legal way and don't want to install the trojan from Electronic Arts to play
 online."

Department of Homeland Security & U.S. Navy Hires Company To Hack Into Video Game Consoles

Department of Homeland Security & U.S. Navy Hires Company To Hack Into Video Game Consoles

The U.S. government has hired a California-based company to hack into video game consoles, such as Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, to watch criminals, especially child predators, and learn how to collect evidence against them. The $177,000 contract with Obscure Technologies of San Rafael, Calif., is being executed by the U.S. Navy on behalf of the Department of Homeland Security because of the Navy’s expertise in the field, officials said. Under the contract, Obscure Technologies will purchase used gaming systems from abroad that are believed to hold “sensitive information from previous users” and try to hack into them. Obscure’s experts will then report back on how they gained access to the systems, provide instructions to obtain users’ chat room activity, and even report back on the data gleaned, according to the contract and tasking documents. Obscure will also purchase new systems and construct a device that can capture data and activity, the documents state.
Over the past few decades, video game systems have grown in sophistication and capabilities by leaps and bounds. Consoles like the Nintendo Wii, Sony PlayStation 3, and Microsoft Xbox can be found in many U.S. households and are popular among servicemembers, with Internet access and hard drives that rival personal computers.
With these advances, Garfinkel said, the systems have become a playground of illegal activity for criminals. In 2008, law enforcement agencies contacted the DHS’s Science and Technology Directorate and requested help in analyzing gaming systems seized during court-authorized searches, Garfinkel said. While some tools exist to extract data from gaming consoles, the consoles are hard to crack as they are designed with copyright protection systems, he said. Navy and DHS officials declined to comment on whether the gaming consoles of Americans will ever be hacked and monitored. They also declined to comment as to whether the system manufacturers had been approached about this research.

Call of Duty 4 Hacked, worrying about MW3

Hackers have been getting lots of media coverage lately, today we have news from a report by PlanetXbox which shows how the original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare game is now being severely hacked. Gamers are finding that when they play this old game they have a high chance of encountering someone who is tampering with the gameplay. The stat from PlanetXbox says that you have a 66% chance of playing with a hacker. This is shocking news as the arrival of Modern Warfare 3 looms and gamers prepare themselves to buy it. Will the hacking continue into the new game? Infinity Ward are obviously taking a back seat when it comes to patching COD4, mainly because it is now considered a legacy title with a relatively low amount of active gamers, however we think that it would be nice if IW done a little bit more to keep the game fun. The MW titles have been very populer amonst gamers and we are hoping that IW and Sledgehammer Games do their utmost to protect MW3 from hackers, love or hate Treyarch you can’t really question the regular title updates which they have been releasing for Black Ops. Obviously as COD4 is almost four years old it is no surprise to see that hackers are getting their wicked way, our question is: do you have worries for Modern Warfare 3?

Microsoft fixed faulty Xbox 360 update by giving free console

Console gamers just can’t catch a break with the video game gods. This time, it is Xbox 360 gamers who can’t play their games. Some Xbox 360 owners are finding a “disk unreadable” or “disk unsupported” error after updating their consoles with the most recent update, where the only fix is to have their consoles replaced, according to TG DailyAt least Microsoft is proactively seeking out affected customers through Xbox LIVE and offering them a new Xbox 360 S (250 GB) plus a one-year free subscription to Xbox LIVE. Kotaku reports that Xbox gamer Avery Penn found out his console is eligible for a new one by email before his DVD drive failed and could no longer load his games. His 360 60GB Pro was bought in 2009 and has a LiteOn DVD drive. Microsoft is certainly learning from Sony’s recent troubles with disgruntled gamers who were locked out of the PSN for nearly a month. According to Kotaku, this update “reflashes the DVD drive to a new stock firmware, and adds support for new XGD3 disk format. It’s this update that allows an extra GB of usable storage on game discs.” Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry blog believes Microsoft is not just being altruistic in offering customers new consoles: the new update is supposed to beef up the console’s ability to detect pirated disks/non-retail disks and prevent them from playing the full game in the future. If your 360 is affected by the firmware update, contact Xbox Support here or DM XboxSupport on Twitter for assistance. Unfortunately, there is no comprehensive list available to check the impact the update may have on your console before you install it. Microsoft did acknowledge the problem “is not specific to older or newer versions of Xbox 360” so there is only one way to find out. Good luck! (Note: This problematic update is not the upcoming one that will allow Xbox LIVE customers to purchase content through their PayPal accounts.)

Google Plus is Now Giving Online Gaming Features

Google+ is became more attractive, they are now giving online gaming features like facebook. Hope now the competition between G+ and FB will be more harder and interesting.
Google's new social network, Google+, took a big step forward Thursday by adding games to its site. Google+ angry birds games Google+, which is less than two months old, said Thursday afternoon that it's beginning to roll out a games button at the top of users' streams. The highly popular Angry Birds&lt;/&gt; is one of the first games to be added to the site, along with Zombie Lane and Edgeworld.
Vic Gundotra, senior vice president of engineering at Google, announced the gaming news in a blog post. Gundotra noted that users will be able to click on a Games button that will be placed above their streams. The button takes them to a games page, allowing games to be available when users want them and hidden when they don't.
"The experiences we have together are just as important to our relationships," wrote Gundotra. "We want to make playing games online just as fun, and just as meaningful, as playing in real life. That means giving you control over when you see games, how you play them and with whom you share your experiences."
And that's going to be an important feature for Google+, which has grown quickly since its launch, according to Ezra Gottheil, an analyst with Technology Business Research.
"Games are a real complement to social networking," said Gottheil. "When people play games with other people, it is often more about being with other people than about the game itself. It actually fits the Circles model well. If you're a serious gamer, you want to talk about the game with other players, but that bores the rest of us silly."
And Gottheil also noted that adding games to the site, while not surprising, is a smart move. If people are able to access great games and engage with Circles of gamers, it easily could draw more users to the fledgling network. "I think Facebook has to be nervous about Google+ taking away some of its time-on-site more than taking away users," he added. In today's blog post, Gundotra noted that users will find their high scores, other games that friends have played recently and invitations to play with friends and family. And he also noted that Circles will only be updated with a user's scores and game play if they are interested in gaming, as well.
"Today we're starting to gradually roll out games in Google+," wrote Gundotra. "We look forward to making them fully available to everyone in Google+ soon. When you see a Games page in your account, please give games a try and send us feedback. Look for the "send feedback" button in the bottom right-hand corner of any page in Google+."

Apple Working On TV With Integrated Voice/Motion Controller & Gaming Console

Apple Working On TV With Integrated Voice/Motion Controller & Gaming Console

Apple is planning an assault on the living room with a TV that will come equipped with an Apple-branded, Kinect-like video game console. According to sources Apple is working on a television set with an iTunes-integrated touch screen remote and Siri-like voice command technology. The TV set will be coming before the end of 2012. Rumors and patents have said as much for the past year, so that’s nothing new. But that’s not all we’ve heard. Also it has come to light that Apple’s television set will come with an Apple-branded, Kinect-like video game console. The interface will rely heavily on motion and touch controls. The rumor gained more traction following claim made by Walter Isaccson in Steve Jobs’ biography that the late Apple CEO would ‘like to create an integrated television set that is completely easy to use’ that would ‘ seamlessly synced with all of your devices and with iCloud. ‘Jobs also claimed to have ‘finally cracked’ the user interface problem to make the whole package easy to use.
Here comes few Doubts:-
  • Outside of the iOS platform (iPhone and iPad), Apple isn’t known as a gaming company.
  • A TV with a built-in voice and motion controller and a games console? How much is this thing going to retail for exactly?
  • The games console market is tightly stitched up by Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo. Breaking into this new market would be extremely difficult.
  • Valve does have a portfolio of Mac games, but not enough to create a new ecosystem for a games console.
  • Apart from branding, what differentiates an Apple games experience from PC/Mac/Xbox 360/PS3?
  • Wouldn’t it make more sense for Apple to bring iOS games into the living room through an updated Apple TV set top box? There’s a massive ecosystem of games here ready to exploit, along with a healthy developer base.
  • That said, folks who own an iPhone/iPad and an Apple TV device can use AirPlay to put games on any HDMI-enabled TV without the need for an Apple-branded TV or an Apple-branded games console. Where does a console fit into the picture?

IE Flaw Can Cause Zero-Day Exploit

A security breach of Internet Explorer could occur if a hacker hijacks session cookies from users' visits to a Web site, According to Rosario Valotta, an Italian security researcher. In a process coined "cookiejacking" by Valotta, the stolen data can be used to carry out a zero-day attack. Successfully compromised systems can be installed with malware, send messages or forge clicks. The researcher warns that this flaw affects all versions of Microsoft’s Internet browser. The exploit only occurs when a user drags and drops an object across the PC screen. Valotta was able to test this by creating a Facebook game where users dragged articles of clothing to reveal an undressed photo of a woman. "I published this game online on FaceBook and in less than three days, more than 80 cookies were sent to my server, " Valotta told Reuters. "And I've only got 150 friends." To be leveraged into a zero-day attack a hacker would need to create an IFrame element in a Web site and have a user select the entire cookie. Using Valotta's Facebook demonstration as an example, the cookie would be hidden in the article of clothing object. Once a user drags the piece of clothing, this violates the browser’s cross-zone interaction policy, and allows the attacker access to the victim’s system. To add another level of difficulty when performing this attack, the exploit involves hackers knowing a potential victim’s Windows username and which OS version is being used -- before getting the user to select the entire content of the harmful cookie. While Microsoft is investigating the discovered flaw, Microsoft spokesman Jerry Bryant believes there is little risk of vulnerability being exploited. "Given the level of required user interaction, this issue is not one we consider high risk," said Bryant.

Battlefield 3 Server Hacked

Some enterprising hackers have successfully created 128-player servers for the Battlefield 3 Beta. Players using the Beta are only supposed to have access to the 32-player Operation Metro map in Rush mode. However, some servers have been appearing offering the Metro map in Conquest mode... with 128-player support.
According to Battlefield 3 Blog, these servers have been "considerably laggy". EA has since released a statement on Battlelog, informing players not to join any hacked servers, or they will risk losing their EA accounts.

According to Battlefield 3 Blog:-
"The Battlefield 3 beta is currently seeing well over 100,000 players spread out across numerous game servers, all officially running the Operation Metro map with the Rush mode, with support of up to 32 players.
Unofficially, however, several servers have been popping up with the conquest version of Operation Metro, which supports up to 64 players. Not only that, some game servers have already been hacked to support up to 128 players — we’ve tested out Operation Metro on conquest with 64 and 128 players, and can confirm their existence, albeit, the 128 player server lagged considerably.
Since then, DICE has released a statement on Battlelog, informing users not to join any unofficial/hacked servers. Doing so can compromise your EA account and have it banned by EA (meaning you won’t have access to your other EA games, either)."

In other BF3 news, more and more youtube videos are appearing showcasing the Beta's many glitches. DICE has confirmed it will be fixing these bugs in the full version.

Sony Online Entertainment Shut Down After 25 Million More Acounts Hacked

Sony Online Entertainment has temporarily shut down its online games service and its Facebook games after discovering the April break-in that led to the theft of 77 million user accounts also affected its system.
A spokesman for the online games unit said the service was taken down at 1:30 am Pacific time on Monday. The spokesman declined to say how many customers were affected and none were alerted beyond a terse message on its website.
Facebook games developed by Sony Online Entertainment including "PoxNora," "Dungeon Overlord," "Wildlife Refuge," as well as games based on the Star Wars movies, were all shut down.
Sony posted a message on Facebook saying "we had to temporarily take down SOE services during the night." A Sony spokesman said the Facebook games make money from microtransactions and the sale of virtual goods like costumes and weapons.
Facebook could not immediately be reached for comment.
Sony Online Entertainment is a division of Sony Corp, the global electronics company that operates online games such as "EverQuest" and is separate from the PlayStation video game console division.
Story continues below
The spokesman, who could not confirm a Nikkei report that 12,700 credit card numbers were stolen from the intrusion of Sony Online Entertainment, said it was not "a second attack" and was related to the April 17-19 break-in of the Sony PlayStation Network.
"In the course of our investigation into the intrusion into our systems we have discovered an issue that warrants enough concern for us to take the service down effective immediately," the company said on its website.
Sony on Monday denied on its official PlayStation blog that hackers had tried to sell it a list of millions of credit card numbers.
The news comes less than a week after Sony alerted customers that a hacker broke into Sony's PlayStation video game network and stole names, addresses, passwords and possibly credit card numbers of its 77 million customers.
Sony alerted customers a week after discovering the break-in.
Sony executives apologized on Sunday and said it would gradually restart the PlayStation Network with increased security and would offer some free content to users.

Microsoft Planned To Release Skype Application For Windows Mobile
Microsoft Corporation has planned to release Skype video-calling application for its Windows Phone. The application will be avalable on April this year. Terry Myerson, head of the Redmond, Washington-based company’s mobile business, said in an interview last week. It will unveil the software today at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, and release a version for beta testers. Terry Myerson, head of the Redmond, Washington-based company’s mobile business, said in an interview last week. It will unveil the software today at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, and release a version for beta testers.
Microsoft bought Skype to gain customers and enhance its existing products -- such as Windows phones and Xbox game consoles, along with Internet-calling and videoconferencing software. Skype customers made more than 300 billion minutes of calls last year, Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer said in January. The service, which handles both voice and video calls, is the top provider of international calling. Windows Phone has just 2 percent of the mobile operating- system market, and lags behind Apple Inc. and Google Inc. in providing apps. Both those rivals already have Skype apps.

Eidos servers hacked, was Deus Ex source code taken?

Publisher Eidos Interactive has this week suffered a major hack on the server/s supporting its forthcoming Deus Ex: Human Revolution website and forums, as well as Eidos.com.
The image above is what was posted instead of the Deus Ex website for a few hours on Thursday. KrebsonSecurity managed to acquire a chat session between the hackers where they were claiming to have downloaded over 9,000 resumes, but more worringly for Eidos, there was talk of source code being found. What isn’t clear is whether it was for the new game, and if so, was it demo code, or the full game?
The hack is thought to have been carried out by former members of Anonymous, and in particular a hacker by the name of Ryan. He was recently thrown out of Anonymous for his actions according to Krebs. However, the chat session suggests it may have been two other hackers, going by the names of evo and nigg, just using Ryan’s name to get the blame put on him.
The entire chat session grab has been uploaded to Pastebin for all to see how these hackers think and decide to do things. It’s unclear what will happen next, but so far we haven’t seen any chatter about Deus Ex being leaked and playable.
Both the Deus Ex official site and Eidos.com seem to be back to normal meaning the security hole used to gain access has been closed and the defacement files removed. At the moment neither Eidos not parent company Square Enix have released a statemtent regarding the hack.

Gaming on Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac

One of the major sore points for users switching from Microsoft to Apple operating systems is the prior investments made on Windows programs. Not only do the users need to repurchase Mac versions of their favorite software, they sometimes have to give up some programs that lack Mac-compatible equivalents. This is a major issue for gamers, as a significant proportion of gaming titles are still written exclusively for Microsoft's platform.

Every 14 Programs Downloaded by Windows Users Turns out to be Malicious

The next time a website says to download new software to view a movie or fix a problem, think twice. There's a pretty good chance that the program is malicious.
In fact, about one out of every 14 programs downloaded by Windows users turns out to be malicious, Microsoft said Tuesday. And even though Microsoft has a feature in its Internet Explorer browser designed to steer users away from unknown and potentially untrustworthy software, about 5 percent of users ignore the warnings and download malicious Trojan horse programs anyway.
Five years ago, it was pretty easy for criminals to sneak their code onto computers. There were plenty of browser bugs, and many users weren't very good at patching. But since then, the cat-and-mouse game of Internet security has evolved: Browsers have become more secure, and software makers can quickly and automatically push out patches when there's a known problem.
So increasingly, instead of hacking the browsers themselves, the bad guys try to hack the people using them. It's called social engineering, and it's a big problem these days. "The attackers have figured out that it's not that hard to get users to download Trojans," said Alex Stamos, a founding partner with Isec Partners, a security consultancy that's often called in to clean up the mess after companies have been hacked.
Social engineering is how the Koobface virus spreads on Facebook. Users get a message from a friend telling them to go and view a video. When they click on the link, they're then told that they need to download some sort of video playing software in order to watch. That software is actually a malicious program.
Social-engineering hackers also try to infect victims by hacking into Web pages and popping up fake antivirus warnings designed to look like messages from the operating system. Download these and you're infected. The criminals also use spam to send Trojans, and they will trick search engines into linking to malicious websites that look like they have interesting stories or video about hot news such as the royal wedding or the death of Osama bin Laden.
"The attackers are very opportunistic, and they latch onto any event that might be used to lure people," said Joshua Talbot, a manager with Symantec Security Response. When Symantec tracked the 50 most common malicious programs last year, it found that 56 percent of all attacks included Trojan horse programs.
In enterprises, a social-engineering technique called spearphishing is a serious problem. In spearphishing, the criminals take the time to figure out who they're attacking, and then they create a specially crafted program or a maliciously encoded document that the victim is likely to want to open -- materials from a conference they've attended or a planning document from an organization that they do business with.

With its new SmartScreen Filter Application Reputation screening, introduced in IE 9, Internet Explorer provides a first line of defense against Trojan horse programs, including Trojans sent in spearphishing attacks.
IE also warns users when they're being tricked into visiting malicious websites, another way that social-engineering hackers can infect computer users. In the past two years, IE's SmartScreen has blocked more than 1.5 billion Web and download attacks, according to Jeb Haber, program manager lead for SmartScreen.
Haber agreed that better browser protection is pushing the criminals into social engineering, especially over the past two years. "You're just seeing an explosion in direct attacks on users with social engineering," he said. "We were really surprised by the volumes. The volumes have been crazy."
When the SmartScreen warning pops up to tell users that they're about to run a potentially harmful program, the odds are between 25 percent and 70 percent that the program will actually be malicious, Haber said. A typical user will only see a couple of these warnings each year, so it's best to take them very seriously.

#OP maZYNGA: Anonymous Targeted Zynga, Leaked Confidential Documents & Games

Infamous hacker collective Anonymous again vows to destroy the most popular social network Facebook and one of its associate along with one of the best place to play online games Zynga. The offensive has been  named Operation MaZynga or dubbed #OP MaZynga. According to a post on AnonNews forum, the hacker group threatened to to take Facebook down on November 5 and release Zynga games to the public on that day for free if Zynga doesn't stop its alleged plans for massive layoffs and offshoring of jobs. Anonymous says that it has obtained secret documents about Zynga's strategy which includes a "massive layoff of a thousand people." The hacker group is ticked off about the jobs. "With a billion dollars cash sitting in a bank we do believe that such actions are an insult to the population and the behaviour of corporations like Zynga must change," it said. Last week, Zynga reported that it has $1.6 billion in cash, equivalents and marketable securities and confirmed that it laid off 150 people. As for rumors of bigger layoffs, these have been circulating for a while.

#OP MaZynga. Press Release From Anonymous:-

Transcript:-

"Zynga customers and Facebook users , We are anonymous . During the last few days anonymous has been targeting Zynga for the outrageous treatment of their employees and their actions against many developers.
We have come to believe that this actions of Zynga will result in massive layoff of a thousand people and legal actions against everyone that speaks to the public about this plan.
It will also come to end of the US game market as we know it as all this jobs will be replaced in other more convenient financial countries.
With a billion dollars cash sitting in a bank we do believe that such actions are an insult to the population and the behaviour of corporations like Zynga must change.
Anonymous could not allow this to happen so it's starting to release confidential documents we have leaked on this plan
As we speak we are planning to release also all the games we've taken from their servers for free.
That being said we will stop the idea of the distribution of such games if Zynga will cease immediately the plan.
The leaked strategy of Zynga , transcript:
Following the preliminary announced of this week the final strategy for the next two quarters has been successfully set to delivery by november 23 an additional but of 800 jobs with further raising of new capital from the market to support businesses.
We've identified our global gambling strategy with bwin.party and as we speak discussions are progressing with a partner to cover the US market.
Work is focused and on-going to completely outsource our development teams in our offices in Bangalore , India to hedge our position in the long term.
We've identified key new products from third parties such as Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime , Shove Prod and Music Invaders in which we are starting business contacts to buy these IP for transaction value of approximately 20 million.
We strongly believe we will conclude these deals this month and compete with this titles against mobile competitors with ease.
Our business continues to evolve and we must evolve with it. We operate in a exciting and challenging industry and I am very pleased that our senior leadership team continue to strengthen and develop with us."

Not that above files have already been removed for “copyright infringement”. Here we want yo give you reminder that i2011 Anonymous openly declared to take down Facebook. The operation was dubbed #Op-Facebook and Anonymous told that they will hit FB on the 5th of November last year. But in reality it was just a threat and as expected Anonymous failed to execute Operation Facebook. This year also members of Anonymous vows to re-engage the same operation on the same day (November 5th) also known as Guy Fawkes Day, named for the English historical figure from which Anonymous derives inspiration. So far neither Facebook, nor Zynga responded this message of the hacker group, so lets wait till November 5th, and stay tuned with VOGH for all the latest update on this & also other stories on cyber security, hacking & infosec industry.
