Linux Mint 16 "Petra" Released With Choice of MATE or Cinnamon

Earlier we have talked many times on Linux Mint, it is one of most modern, elegant and comfortable operating system based on Ubuntu or Debian which is both powerful and easy to use. The Linux Mint project has started  in 2006, since then the consistent effort of it's developers and contributors has made Linux Mint the 4th most widely used home operating system behind Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS and Canonical's Ubuntu. As promised from beginning the mint team used to release their new version in every six months. The last we got was Linux Mint 15 'Olivia'. Again also the team proudly to announced the release of Linux Mint 16 code named "Petra". There's been quite a lot of anticipation for the next version of Linux Mint, and as expected the result is indeed satisfactory. According to the official blog of Linux Mint- "Petra" took 6 months of incremental development on top of stable and reliable technologies. This new release comes with updated software and brings refinements and new features to make your desktop even more comfortable to use. One of the more interesting updates of the release is version 2.0 of Cinnamon (a fork of GNOME Shell), with a large number of new features: "Cinnamon 2.0 represents 5 months of development and 856 commits from 28 developers. Debian Linux 7.0 Code Named 'Wheezy' Released & Added  Multiarch Support, Several Specific Tools

Once it was one of the most popular Linux distribution which have drawn the maximum attention, yes you are right I am talking about none other than Debian Linux. Now a days the craze of this flavor has became little fade but as the foundation for other, more popular Linux distributions, such as Mint, Ubuntu and few Pen Testing Distro, still the value of Debian exist. So the up-gradation and new release of this Linux flavor is  still very much important. And today I will talk about the new release of Debian Linux version 7.0 code named 'Wheezy'. After many months of constant development, the developers at Debian project proudly announced the general availability of the next version of this major Linux which is Debian 7.0 aka 'Wheezy'. According to the release note - This new version of Debian includes various interesting features such as multiarch support, several specific tools to deploy private clouds, an improved installer, and a complete set of multimedia codecs and front-ends which remove the need for third-party repositories. Multiarch support, one of the main release goals for Wheezy, will allow Debian users to install packages from multiple architectures on the same machine. This means that you can now, for the first time, install both 32- and 64-bit software on the same machine and have all the relevant dependencies correctly resolved, automatically. The installation process has been greatly improved: Debian can now be installed using software speech, above all by visually impaired people who do not use a Braille device. Beta Release for Fedora 18 "Spherical Cow" is Now Available For Download & Testing 

After the huge success and response of Fedora 17, now its time to move one step ahead, as the developers at Fedora Project announced the general availability of the first and the final Beta version of Fedora 18 code named "Spherical Cow". This release includes the MATE desktop – a continuation of the classic GNOME 2 interface – in its repositories for the first time. Fedora 18's default edition uses GNOME 3.6.2 as its interface and a separate KDE Spin provides the KDE Software Collection 4.9.3; Xfce 4.10 and version 1.6.7 of Linux Mint's Cinnamon are also available from the distribution's repositories.

Linux Mint 14 "Nadia" Released With MATE, Cinnamon & MDM

Its almost six months have past when Linux Mint 13 “Maya” was released, but now its time to upgrade it as the developers at Linux Mint has officially released and declared the availability of Linux Mint 14 code named "Nadia". Linux Mint 14 is based on Ubuntu 12.10, but offers a more traditional choice of desktop environments instead of Ubuntu's often controversial Unity interface. The two flavors available offer two different desktops, one with the project's own custom-built Cinnamon (a GNOME 2-like user interface based on GNOME 3) and the MATE fork of GNOME 2. According to the blog post by Linux Mint project founder Clement "Clem" Lefebvre -For the first time since Linux Mint 11, the development team was able to capitalize on upstream technology which works and fits its goals. After 6 months of incremental development, Linux Mint 14 features an impressive list of improvements, increased stability and a refined desktop experience.

GNOME 3.6 Released! Includes Number of New Features & Enhancements

The developers at GNOME Project officially declared the general availability of GNOME 3.6, the third major update to the 3.x series. This latest version of GNOME 3 includes a number of new features and enhancements, as well as many bug fixes and minor improvements. Together, they represent a significant upgrade to the GNOME 3 user experience. 

Highlights for this release include:
  • Big improvements to notifications, including a redesigned Message Tray, smarter notifications, and other tweaks and refinements.
  • An enhanced Activities Overview with an improved layout.
  • A greatly enhanced Files application, with functional file search, a new Recent location, redesigned interface and lots of bug fixes and handy new features.
  • Integrated Input Sources, which makes inputting different character sets (eg. Japanese or Chinese) fast and easy.
  • Accessibility on demand, meaning that universal access features like the Orca screen reader can be enabled with the push of a button.
  • A new Lock Screen. This provides an attractive view when the device is locked, plus handy functionality like media controls and notifications.
There are many other enhancements in GNOME 3.6, including Online Accounts support for Microsoft Exchange, Facebook and Windows Live, much improved System Settings and a redesigned User Menu. Many GNOME applications have also received improvements, including Web, Empathy, Disk Usage Analyzer, Disks and the Font Viewer. BackTrack 5 R3 Released & Available To Download

BackTrack 5 R3 Released & Available To Download!!

In our last post about BackTrack we mention the release date of long awaited BT 5 Release 3. So finally the countdown is over. The time has come to refresh our security tool arsenal – BackTrack 5 R3 has been released world wide. First BT5 R3 preview was released  in BlackHat 2012 Las Vegas for the enjoyment of conference attendees. The main aim of that pre-release was to figure out their last bug reports and tool suggestions from the BH / Defcon crowds. This final release mainly focuses on bug-fixes as well as the addition of over 60 new tool. A whole new tool category was populated – “Physical Exploitation”, which now includes tools such as the Arduino IDE and libraries, as well as the Kautilya Teensy payload collection.
As usual KDE and GNOME, 32/64 bit ISOs, have been released a single VMware Image (Gnome, 32 bit). 
We would also like to give to reminder that the first release candidate (R1) of BackTrack 5 was released in August last year. Later in March this year we got the second release candidate (R2) of BT 5. 
For those requiring other VM flavors of BackTrack If you want to build your own VMWare image then instructions can be found in the BackTrack Wiki. Direct ISO downloads will be available once all our HTTP mirrors have synched. Earlier we have discussed several times about BackTrack. After the huge success BackTrack 5 R2, now the world's most popular and widely used penetration testing distribution BackTrack is set to release its third release candidate (R3) of BT 5. According to the official release The BackTrack Development team will be releasing an R3 revision of their Penetration Testing distribution in 2 weeks. This release focuses on bugfixes and over 50 new tool additions – making it the most potent revision yet. Though the BT5 R3 preview has already been released in BlackHat 2012 Las Vegas for the enjoyment of conference attendees, which can be found in their delegate bags.  The DVD contains a BT5 R3 Gnome, 32 bit edition – burnt as an ISO (as opposed to an image). The BackTrack Development team will be taking in their last bug reports and tool suggestions from the BH / Defcon crowds for the upcoming official release, which will be on August 13th, 2012. We would also like to give to reminder that the first release candidate (R1) of BackTrack 5 was released in August last year. Current BT5 users can simply upgrade to the latest release using the regular update commands. More details will be released along with the full listing of new tools on the 13th of August.

Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal) Alpha 2 Arrives With Linux Kernel 3.5-rc4 & Improved Filesystem Utilities
The first alpha version of Ubuntu 12.10 was made available in the first week of June. As expected now the Canonical and the Ubuntu developer team has released the second alpha of version 12.10 of their Ubuntu codenamed "Quantal Quetzal". The new alpha release mostly has package updates to the distribution's components, including a Linux 3.5-rc4 based kernel (Ubuntu kernel 3.5.0-2.2), filesystem utilities (e2fsprogs, mdadm, autofs and btrfs-tools), Firefox and Thunderbird, and GTK+ (to the 3.5 series which will allow a number of GNOME 3.5 updates to take place).
Ubuntu Server has seen updates too, with Tomcat 7 replacing Tomcat 6, Chef 0.10.x, Ceph-0.57.2, MySQL 5.5.25 and updates to OpenStack to track the current "folsom" development milestones. The alpha 2 release also sees images for the Calxeda ARM servers being made available. There are also updates for Kubuntu, with KDE SC 4.9 Beta 2 included, and the experimental replacement of LibreOffice with Calligra Suite. Xubuntu sees a later Xfce (4.10) in use and updated Gimp and gThumb. 
ISO images of the general desktop testing release are available for 32- and 64-bit x86 systems and 64-bit Mac systems. For all changes, known issues and links to further information and other images, consult the Alpha 2 Technical Overview. Development releases are meant for testing only and should not be used in a production or critical environment; users wanting a stable system should install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Fedora 17 "Beefy Miracle" Released With JBoss Application Server, oVirt & More
Couple of weeks ago we got the Beta version of Fedora 17 and now the developers at Fedora Project announced the general availability of of its popular Linux distribution Fedora 17 code named "Beefy Miracle". According to the release note - "At the heat of a thousand hot dog cookers, the seventeenth release of Fedora shall be forged by contributors the world over, and it will be known as: Beefy Miracle. The mustard shall indicate progress. For six months, participants in the Fedora Project shall freely contribute to the release of the distribution, in the spirit of the Four Foundations -- Freedom, Friends, Features, and First -- and moreover, they shall relish in Fun, as a community without Fun would be like a day without sunshine..."
This new release includes a version of the GNOME Shell which works on systems with graphics drivers that don't support 3D acceleration. The latest version of the Linux distribution also implements much-discussed changes to the filesystem structure involving the removal of the /bin/, /sbin/, /lib/ and /lib64/ directories. A new sandbox feature allows applications to be easily isolated using KVM or LXC.
Fedora 17 includes a pre-release of Juno, the release of the  Eclipse SDK expected in June 2012.  Java 7 (and OpenJDK 7) is the default Java runtime and Java build toolset, and GCC 4.7.x is now the primary compiler in Fedora.  Other language refreshes include shipping Ruby 1.9.3, the latest stable version of the Ruby language; PHP 5.4, the latest PHP stack; an update of Erlang to the R15 release; and the D language has been updated to the 2.058 release.
Fedora 17 will increase your reliability and versatility with the new enhancements to the clustering stack in Fedora  17. Load balancing and high availability improvements have been made, allowing systems administrators to deploy Fedora in environments requiring greater availability and clustered file systems. JBoss Application Server (AS) 7 has also been added to Fedora 17; this fast, lightweight, and modular application server allows you to run full Java EE applications. oVirt, a server virtualization management system with advanced capabilities for hosts and guests, is also included.  The automatic multi-seat feature enables multiple, concurrent end-users to utilize a desktop from a single machine, which any systems administrator can relish. Klaus Knopper, creator of Knoppix officially declared the general availability of its popular Live Linux distribution - Knoppix 7.0.1. This release includes a number of improvements and package upgrades, while removing proprietary packages, such as Adobe Reader. Version 7.0.1 of Knoppix is based on the usual picks from Debian stable (squeeze) and newer Desktop packages from Debian/testing and Debian/unstable (wheezy). It uses kernel 3.3.7 and LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment) as its default desktop environment. The DVD version of Knoppix also includes a choice of GNOME 3.4 or KDE SC 4.7.4 (the current release is KDE SC 4.8.3 from early May), and additional packages such as VirtualBox 4.1.4. Package upgrades include version 3.5.3 of the LibreOffice productivity suite, Wine 1.5.4, Chromium 18 and Iceweasel 10, the re-branded version of the Firefox web browser for Debian. It now has version 1.4 of the open source ADRIANE (Audio Desktop Reference Implementation and Networking Environment) talking menu system for blind users. Other changes include better support for Broadcom Wi-Fi chipsets and experimental support for automatically detecting graphics cards with composite 3D extensions for the Compiz window manager. Linux Mint 13 features the choice between a productive, stable and mature MATE 1.2 desktop and the brand new modern-looking and exciting Cinnamon 1.4. These two desktops are among the best available, they’re perfectly integrated within Linux Mint and represent great alternatives to Gnome 2 users. According to the project release this update mainly adds corrections for security problems to the stable release, along with a few adjustments for serious problems. Last year we got both FreeBSD & PCBSD 9 after few months we got GhostBSD 2.5 Final version. Couple of moths ago a public beta of NetBSD 6.0 get released for testing purpose. Now its the turn of OpenBS, The OpenBSD project has made version 5.1 of its free BSD-based UNIX-like operating system available to download. The latest update to the distribution comes six months after the release of OpenBSD 5.0 and includes better hardware support, performance improvements and new features, as well as package upgrades.

FreeBSD 8.3 Released With Gnome 2.32.1, KDE 4.7.4 & Many More 
Earlier in this year we got FreeBSD 9 and now FreeBSD Release Engineering Team announced the availability of FreeBSD 8.3. This is the fourth release from the 8-STABLE branch which improves on the functionality of FreeBSD 8.2 and introduces some new features. Some of the highlights:
  • usb(4) now supports the USB packet filter
  • TCP/IP stack now supports the mod_cc(9) pluggable congestion control framework
  • graid(8) GEOM class added to support various BIOS-based software RAID controllers (replacement for ataraid(4))
  • ZFS subsystem updated to SPA version 28
  • Gnome version 2.32.1, KDE version 4.7.4

FreeBSD 8.3 can be installed from bootable ISO images or over the network. Some architectures (currently amd64 and i386) also support installing from a USB memory stick. The required files can be downloaded via FTP or BitTorrent as described in the sections below. While some of the smaller FTP mirrors may not carry all architectures, they will all generally contain the more common ones such as amd64 and i386. Fedora 17 Beta Codenamed "Beefy Miracle" Released 

After Fedora 16 codenamed "Verne" now the developers at Fedora Project announced the availability the next version of Fedora and that is Fedora 17 "Beta" code-named "Beefy Miracle". In this release you will get Linux kernel 3.3.0 along with enhanced security, Virtualization, cloud an many more. As per schedule the final version of Fedora 17 will be available on on 22 May this year.
The following are major features for Fedora 17:-
  • GNOME 3.4 and KDE 4.8
  • OpenStack, Eucalyptus, CloudStack and Open Nebula
  • ICC profiles for color printing and an improved gimp
  • Still more virtualization improvements
File Systems:-
Large filesystems -Fedora 17 will support file systems larger than 16 terabytes on the default file system (ext4). With the latest version of e2fsprogs, ext4 file systems can now be up to 100 TB.
Encrypted filesystems -Fedora 17 uses version 1.4.1 of the cryptsetup package, which removes deprecated API calls. In addittion, it supports placing LUKS headers on separate devices and the creation of shared, non-overlapping encrypted segments on a single device.
btrfs -btrfs is not available as a target file system during installation. This is a temporary situation and will be resolved in Fedora 18. btrfs is still available after installation.

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) Beta 2 Released !!!
Good new for Ubuntu lovers. The developers has declared the general availability of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin Beta 2. The 1st beta of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS came earlier in March this year. Earlier we have also got two Alpha1 & Alpha2 release of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. 
The Unity Files lens used to only rely on Zeitgeist, meaning it could only find files you've opened. In the latest Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin beta 2, the File Lens can also display results for files you've never accessed / interacted with. Unity (both 2D and 3D) gained an option to configure the launcher for multi-monitor setups: you can now select to display the launcher on the primary monitor or on all monitors. The Launcher behaviour for multi-monitor setups can be set from System Settings (Displays, under Launcher Placement). HUD got various improvements which include a new animation, it now respects the launcher behaviour (autohide, visible) and launcher icon size. For those not familiar with HUD, it's a searchable smart menu that can be summoned by tapping the ALT key. HUD is optional and it doesn't replace the regular menus.

There's also great news or GNOME Shell users: even though it was initially said that Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin will have GNOME Shell 3.2 in the official repositories, thanks to Jeremy Bicha and Rico Tzschichholz, Precise has the latest GNOME Shell 3.4 in the official repositories, along with most other GNOME 3.4 applications / components. 
Note that:- The current stable release of Ubuntu is 11.10 "Oneiric Ocelot" from October 2011, while the most recent LTS version is Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS "Lucid Lynx".

Earlier in September 2011 we got Scientific Linux 6.1 and in the December we got RHEL 6.2 now after two months The Scientific Linux Project announced the availability of the next version of SL which is Scientific Linux 6.2. This version of SL is completely based on RHEL.
Differences From SL6.1 :-

     DVD installs do not ask for the network unless needed

     This packages includes a patch to disable NAT pings to avoid a race
