The Wine team has officially released the availability of stable release Wine 1.4. After twenty moths of hard work and development finally we got Wine 1.4 Stable. Before this the Wine Team has released 6 Release Candidate of this version for testing purposes. More than 16,000 individual changes have been done in this release. The main highlights are the new DIB graphics engine, a redesigned audio stack, and full support for bidirectional text and character shaping. It also contains a lot of improvements across the board, as well as support for many new applications, notably Microsoft Office 2010. Additional information can be found from the release note.

Jeremy White, CodeWeavers founder and CEO, announced yesterday that yet another Linux project has been hacked. He said in a post to the Wine-users mailing list that he is "sad to say that there was a compromise of the WineHQ database system."
Attackers have used phpMyAdmin, an open source database administration tool, to access the WineHQ project's database and harvest users' appdb and bugzilla access credentials. An incident report on the project's mailing list says that the attackers also obtained users' encrypted access passwords; whether the attackers will be able to crack these depends on their motivation and the strength of individual passwords, said the report. Therefore, the attackers can potentially also access other services if a WineHQ database user has used the same access credentials there.
The Wine developers say that they will be resetting every password and sending a message to all affected users. They note that externally accessing phpMyAdmin is no longer possible and that it currently remains unclear whether the intrusion was achieved via a security hole or a compromised administrator account. The developers also said that they believe that the attackers had no further system access. "We saw no evidence of any attempt to change the database", they added.
Red Hat’s annual summit is off to a hot start. Besides free beer and wine before the opening keynote, the Linux leader announced it will hand off a release candidate of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.1 to select partners during the summit this week. General availability for the version 6 update is expected in the “coming weeks, ” the company announced today. The first beta was made available in March.
Knoppix 7.0.1 With Kernel 3.3.7, LXDE, ADRIANE & Iceweasel 10
Klaus Knopper, creator of Knoppix officially declared the general availability of its popular Live Linux distribution - Knoppix 7.0.1. This release includes a number of improvements and package upgrades, while removing proprietary packages, such as Adobe Reader. Version 7.0.1 of Knoppix is based on the usual picks from Debian stable (squeeze) and newer Desktop packages from Debian/testing and Debian/unstable (wheezy). It uses kernel 3.3.7 and LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment) as its default desktop environment. The DVD version of Knoppix also includes a choice of GNOME 3.4 or KDE SC 4.7.4 (the current release is KDE SC 4.8.3 from early May), and additional packages such as VirtualBox 4.1.4. Package upgrades include version 3.5.3 of the LibreOffice productivity suite, Wine 1.5.4, Chromium 18 and Iceweasel 10, the re-branded version of the Firefox web browser for Debian. It now has version 1.4 of the open source ADRIANE (Audio Desktop Reference Implementation and Networking Environment) talking menu system for blind users. Other changes include better support for Broadcom Wi-Fi chipsets and experimental support for automatically detecting graphics cards with composite 3D extensions for the Compiz window manager.
