Earlier we have discussed several times on android- which is one of the world's most popular and widely used operating system based on Linux kernel, mainly designed for smartphones and tablet computers. Since last four years we have got various flavor of android among them 2.2 (Froyo), 2.3.3–2.3.7 (Gingerbread), 3.2 (Honeycomb), 4.0.3–4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) & 4.1.x-4.3.x (Jelly Bean) successfully drawn public attention and gained popularity. After the success of Jelly Bean, now Google has introduced Android 4.4 nicknamed 'KitKat.' Official website of android explained the reason of this nomenclature -'as everyone finds chocolate so tempting, we decided to name the next version of Android after one of our favorite chocolate treats, the KitKat®!' Immediately after this release android 4.4 is vogue as with this version of android Google improved performance and memory usage, makes this version more compatible than ever; you can easily try KitKat on your older smartphones. Now lets illuminate android 4.4 briefly-

Introduction:-

Readers, I will introduce a simple way the new features of the version of android, "The KitKat" Accompanies the more intelligent and simple search for Android, says the official Google blog, and more importantly, Should Have compatibility with older devices. This means more people que can have access to the innovations than other Android updates.

Performance and improved use of memory:-

Many of the major changes are the KitKat under the hood. The overall performance should improve, especially in relation to RAM. The Android developers site says "KitKat streamlines all the key components to reduce memory consumption", so even older smartphones running Android 4.4 will be faster and more responsive - even with 512MB of RAM. The multitasking should work better and you can switch applications without lock your smartphone.

Simpler and more powerful: (Google Now)

The Google Now gained much prominence in KitKat, with quick, more cards, and more features without using their hands. Not too can wake up your smartphone to start a search and take a picture saying only "OK Google Now"? It's like Google Glass, but on your smartphone.

The Google Now will also gain space on your homescreen, if you want (and you can slide left to right to find it), and Google will add more cards to make your smartphone smarter automatically suferindo things based on your interests , location, and more.

Support SMS, location sharing, and animated GIFs in Hangouts:-

Google announced this week that Hangouts will turn the main messaging app - is text messaging, video calls and instant. If you hate having your conversations scattered in several different apps, with KitKat you need only Hangouts, which replaces the old Mail app.

The use of location sharing can be very convenient when you're meeting a friend and wants to tell exactly where it is.

Finally, if you like to put emojis in messages, are present in many new keyboard Google.

Improvements in NFC, Cloud Printing and File Management:-

The KitKat also includes improvements that developers can now use apps to improve their apps. Regarding the NFC, it may automatically take you to the right app when you touch your device into a payment terminal. Printer manufacturers can develop served to send print files from Android to your printer. And the new framework for access to storage provides a consistent way to access files stored in other facilities in other apps (eg, open or save files in Dropbox or Box when you're in the browser).

FBI Wanted Cyber Criminal Hamza Bendelladj Arrested in Thailand

Another FBI listed cyber criminal get nabbed. The suspect named Hamza Bendelladj of 24 yrs have been arrested in late Sunday night during a layover at Thailand’s international airport while traveling from Malaysia to Egypt. According to the officials Bendelladj is an Algerian national wanted by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for allegedly making tens of millions of dollars from cyber crime. Police confiscated two laptops, a tablet computer, a satellite phone and a number of external hard drives from Bendelladj. According to the officials FBI had been pursuing Bendelladj for nearly three years. U.S. authorities believe the suspect hacked private accounts in more than 217 banks and financial companies worldwide, causing about $10 million in losses per transaction. After this arrest, he will be extradited to the U.S. state of Georgia, where a district court has issued an arrest warrant. In an exclusive report Bangkok Post said -a smiling Bendelladj, who was present at the press conference, denied claims by the Thai authorities that he was on the FBI's top-10 most wanted list. "I'm not in the top 10, maybe just 20th or 50th," the Algerian suspect said with a laugh. "I am not a terrorist."

Near about five months ago Microsoft announced that they will introduce a tablet computer of its own design that runs a new version of its Windows operating system, and that tablet was named 'Surface'. After this announcement we got the long awaited Surface tablet based on Windows RT. Now the software giant announced that the next version of its tablet computer which will run on full version of Windows 8 Pro is ready for sale. in a blog post Microsoft confirmed that the device will start at $899 for the 64GB model, with the 128GB version setting you back $999. Both of those are what's Microsoft's dubbing the "standalone" model, which means you'll get a Surface pen/stylus, but have to shell out extra for a Touch or Type Cover (each over $100). Both will be available in January, although there's no specific date or word on pre-orders yet. The current Surface uses the slimmed down Windows RT operating system. As a result, it runs only specially designed applications from Microsoft and others sold through the company's online store. The Pro version of Surface will also run regular Windows applications written for desktops and laptops. "It's a full PC AND a tablet," Surface general manager Panos Panay wrote in a blog post Thursday.

Both Surface RT & Pro looks similar to the including the same "VaporMg" casing and built-in kickstand, and it also boasts a 10.6-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio. A key difference with that latter bit, though, is that the screen packs a full 1920 x 1080 resolution as opposed to the 1366 x 768 found on the RT model. You'll also get a third-gen Core i5 processor with Intel HD Graphics 4000 (no more specifics on that just yet), 4GB of RAM, a Mini DisplayPort that can output a 2560 x 1440 resolution, a full-size USB 3.0 port and, of course, Windows 8 Pro with support for all your traditional desktop applications. All that expectedly makes the tablet itself a bit heftier than its RT-based counterpart -- it's just over half-an-inch thick and weighs in at two pounds on the nose.

The spec list confirmed that the Surface Pro will have a 42 W-h battery, but Microsoft has now also expanded on that in a tweet, saying that the device is expected to "have approximately half the battery life of Surface with Windows RT." Based on our testing of the RT version, that should translate to just over four-and-a-half hours.

There are many companies who are manufacturing tablet, but before choosing, we should know which one is secured than others. According to a recent report by Context Information Security -the PlayBook of BlackBerry is the only device among three top tablets that gives users a good, safe division between their work and personal computing, a recent technology audit concluded.  The report faulted the PlayBook, as well as the Apple iPad and the Samsung Galaxy Tab, for default settings that don't automatically encrypt backups, and for not offering complementary and compatible tools for IT teams to manage a large number of devices at the business level. According to Jonathan Roach, Principal Consultant at Context and author of the report "While the iPad and BlackBerry PlayBook performed better, both still have security deficiencies -- including desktop software that fails to encrypt backups by default." He also said "Context found the PlayBook to be the most work-ready personal tablet of the three, due to its Bridge application's excellent support of barriers between work and personal profiles," 

According to report by contrast, Apple's wildly popular iPad sold more than 17 million units last quarter. Context found the iPad to be the second-most-secure device, citing its "robust data protection and damage limitation facilities," but said on its news page that the device was still vulnerable to jailbreak attacks and "ineffective disk encryption unless a strong passcode policy is applied." 

The report also found the Galaxy Tab's security features to be the least work-play ready, with weak disk-encryption support. The Galaxy Tab's lack of tools tailored to enterprise use makes it "very difficult to manage more than a small number of Galaxy Tabs in an enterprise environment," a point Apple also falls short on. The report criticized the Galaxy Tab's encryption as well. Even with encryption enabled, the report found that Samsung's device still "allows badly-written apps to store sensitive information on the unencrypted SD card." The report also praised all three tablets for their support of Exchange ActiveSync, a feature that allows crucial security settings to be managed from a central server running Microsoft software. But the study noted important differences among the devices that may make some tablets more appropriate for dual use in both the home and the office.

"Despite that security advantage, RIM only managed to ship 130,000 tablets last quarter. By contrast, Apple's wildly popular iPad sold more than 17 million units last quarter. The long awaited gaming tablet with detachable controls based on Android  is set for release on October 31st. The mobile gaming tablet is named 'Wikipad' will be available for $499. Online retailing store, GameStop which has tied-up with Wikipad, has already started taking pre-orders for the Tegra-3 based tablet. Furthermore, those who pre-order a Wikipad will receive value added extras, including one issue of the GameStop-owned Game Informer digital magazine, and "full-length titles." Though these games were not announced, but GameStop plans to reveal them soon. The Wikipad will support games downloadable through PlayStation Mobile, Nvidia's Tegra Zone, Google Play and other forthcoming platforms.

Wikipad sports a 10.1-inch IPS display and will have a 1280×800 resolution. It is powered by an Nvidia Tegra 3 processor clocking at 1.4GHz. It will come with 1GB RAM and 8GB on-board storage expandable to 64GB. To put your game face on, just attach the gaming controller which features multiple buttons and analog joysticks.

Wikipad has also partnered with Gaikai for streaming video games. Gaikai, previously known as the Sony Cloud service, was bought by the company for $380 million. Gamers will be able to stream Gaikai's library of titles to their Wikipad, including big titles like Battlefield 3, Mass Effect 3 and Saints Row: The Third.

The final countdown of Windows 8 begins as software giant Microsoft announced that they will start selling Windows 8 from coming October 26, a little more than three months from now. This release will be first stable one of Windows 8, earlier we got three pre-release version of Windows 8 -Consumer Preview, Developer Preview & Release Preview. Windows 8 is Designed to work on both PCs and tablet computers, So far Windows 8 is Microsoft's best hope for competing with devices. According to official blog of Windows Steam - "Steven Sinofsky announced at Microsoft’s annual sales meeting that customers will be able to get Windows 8 – whether in upgrade fashion or on a new PC – starting on October 26^th. Earlier this month at the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference, Tami Reller told attendees Windows 8 would be available in October. But now everyone has a specific date to mark on their calendars."

The Oct. 26 date is also significant to users now running Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7, as it marks the debut of the $39.99 upgrade to Windows 8. The price is a dramatic discount from other Windows upgrade. All users who upgrade will receive Windows 8 Pro, the more advanced of the two retail editions. Microsoft has also tied the launch of its Windows RT operating system, and its first-ever tablet, dubbed "Surface" to the debut of Windows 8. It does have some wiggle room, however, for the tablet, because it has said that the device would go on sale around the time of Windows 8's release. Microsoft officials have not said how much the promised System Builder SKU will be for those who want to build their own PCs. They also have not said whether a full, non-upgrade version will be available via retail and how much it will cost.

CyanogenMod team has released the first release candidate of CyanogenMod 9 based on Android 4.0. Six months ago Google published the source code of its Android 4.0, code-named "Ice Cream Sandwich" (ICS), and this first release candidate of CyanogenMod 9.0 is based on that code.  According to the release note "The jump from 2.3.7 to 4.0.4 in many ways was a fresh start for this project, and as much as the code changed, the structure and organization of CM as a whole changed as well. It meant a lot of hard work, and late nights, but also a ton of fun. We are in this for the challenge, and the reward is always the satisfaction received when we release it to the masses as a ‘stable’ product. This RC1 brings us a step forward toward that payoff ..."

This release comes just as Google is expected to launch the next version of Android, code-named "Jelly Bean", at its Google I/O conference. CyanogenMod RC1 is available for 37 devices and support for several more devices is expected to be added with future release candidates.  This is the first version of the ROM which does not include root access by default. This change fixes potential security problems while at the same time being unnoticeable to most users. For users who need root access this feature can be enabled from within the system settings to allow for USB debugging and applications that need root access. 

Interested developers can download a version of the release candidate for their specific device from the redesigned get.cm web site or through the ROM Manager application on their phone or tablet.

Earlier in October, 2011 the long awaited 'Aakash' came in front of us and after the countdown in December last year UbiSlate 7, the upgraded version of Aakash finally made available for online booking. After a huge success now  HRD Minister of India Mr. Kapil Sibal has unveiled a new version of the "world's cheapest tablet computer" - widely known as "Aakash 2".  The device, primarily for students, is to be sold for 2,263 rupees ($40; £26). It has a faster processor, longer battery life and more programming capability than an earlier version.

“Unlike other tablet devices, Aakash can also be used to create computer programs, in Python, C, C++ and Scilab,” - said Kapil Sibal, adding that the tablet can be further used for accessing e-governance services. The government has approved the specifications of the upgraded version of the tablets submitted by Datawind, to IIT-Bombay for testing. “The government has approved the specifications,” Datawind CEO Sunit Singh Tuli confirmed. The Aakash 2 sample devices are now being tested, with manufacturing projected to start by July or August. Like its predecessor, the Aakash 2 allows users to watch online tutorials and videos, browse the internet and play games. "It's a fully-fledged computer, not just an access device," said Prof DB Phatak from Bombay IIT. "The applications and the content on Aakash 2 are most important, not just the device." The new version of the Aakash tablet has an 800Mhz processing speed, a three-hour battery life and operates on the latest Android software. It also has an SD card slot, a USB port and works over wi-fi. It does not have 3G capability, however, so users need access to a good internet connection. Few days ago in a report we have said that Microsoft is expected to launch it's own tablet (Microsoft Surface) while aiming to compete with iPad. Redmond based software and hardware giant just unveiled the next big step in its mobile software, Windows Phone 8 codenamed “Apollo” Windows Phone 8 brings the platform in line with other mobile OSes by adding support for muti-core processors, higher screen resolutions and newer wireless technologies like near field communication (NFC). Importantly, Microsoft has re-coded Windows Phone from the ground up for the new version. Previous versions of Windows Phone were based on Microsoft’s old mobile OS, Windows CE, but now the platform will share the same source code as the company’s coming desktop OS, Windows 8. That has big consequences for developers and consumers. For developers, it will be extremely easy to create a Windows Phone app if they already have a Windows 8 app that runs in the Metro environment (and vice versa). For consumers, it means more apps and better hardware to run them. It also has the effect of rendering every current Windows Phone obsolete, since those phones won’t be able to run the new software. They will, however, get an upgrade to Windows Phone 7 to 8. Windows Phone 8 adds support for many new hardware features. The most anticipated is support for multi-core devices, which have become common on both Android and iOS platforms. There’s also support for better screen resolutions, including 720p and 1,280 x 768 (WXGA). That’s not quite retina, but it’s better than the 800 x 480 screen of the Nokia Lumia 900, one of the current leading Windows Phones.

New Features At a Glance :-

• Support for multi-core processors. Existing support for single core has been a major concern for some high-end users wanting faster processing ability.

• Two new high-definition screen resolutions for the coming OS. They are 1280 x 768 and 1280 x 720.

• Removeable micro-SD support for the first time to allow expansion of base storage.

• A busier start screen with room for more live tiles than in Windows Phone 7.5. Today's Windows Phones have room for up to eight live tiles and WP8 will have room for up to 32 live tiles, which can be sized differently.

• IT support. Adminstrators will see some gaps in the existing OS filled, including support for encryption and secure boot in WP8, as well as the ability to allow IT to deploy apps without going through Windows Marketplace.

• Built-in Nokia Navteq map technology, with turn-by-turn driving instructions in many countries.

• Full Internet Explorer 10 support with more features of HTML 5 added. Belfiore said that Windows Phone 8 with IE10 will download Web pages slightly faster than three other popular smartphones on the market.

• Native code support, a feature seen as useful to developers eager to move their apps from iOS or Android to Windows Phone.

A Speculation is building that Microsoft is expected to introduce a tablet computer of its own design that runs a new version of its Windows operating system in an effort to compete with Apple's iPad. It is the first time in the company’s 37-year history that it will offer a computer of its own creation.

This would be a dramatic break from Microsoft's usual moves in computer hardware, where it develops the software and licenses that to hardware makers to ensure the broadest possible market. But Microsoft has fallen behind Apple and Google in the fast growing tablet market – already one-eighth as large as the PC market and forecast to be 40% by 2016. The fastest growth in tablet sales is in western countries, where PC sales are slowing, reducing sales in the Windows division in four of the past six quarters. Windows 8, to be released this year, is designed to be used on a tablet as well as a desktop PC. 

Microsoft has invited the media to an event in Los Angeles Monday afternoon, where it is expected to show its tablet device. The entertainment industry Web site The Wrap earlier reported that Microsoft planned to announce a tablet at the event.

For Microsoft, making a tablet is a risky venture. Even with the emerging competition from the iPad, Windows remains one of the greatest franchises the technology industry has known, accounting for $4.6 billion in sales during the most recently reported quarter. Those sales are rooted in Microsoft’s alliance with its hardware partners. The plans could erode the commitment those partners have to Windows since Microsoft will effectively be competing with them for sales.

After Consumer Preview Windows 8 & Windows 8 Developer Preview now Microsoft just announced final pre-release version of Windows 8 named Windows 8 Release Preview. Windows 8 is considered to be the biggest change in decades to Microsoft's widely used operating system. In a blog post, Steven Sinofsky, Microsoft's top Windows executive, touted the Release Preview as the "final pre-release" build, and talked about the next milestone, RTM, for "release to manufacturing," the label that describes the completed version used by computer makers to pre-install the operating system on new PCs. 

The software displays applications in a mosaic of tiles and has been designed so it can run desktop, laptop and tablet computers. In this final pre-release, and includes Windows 8, Internet Explorer 10, new Windows 8 apps for connecting to Hotmail, SkyDrive, and Messenger (and many more), and hundreds of new and updated apps in the Windows Store. Other new apps in this release include a Bing Travel app, as well as Gaming and Music Xbox apps that integrate with Microsoft’s Zune music service. Microsoft says that it will focus its resources before launching the final version of Windows 8 on improving the installation process, security and privacy, as well as device and software compatibility. As Microsoft’s president of its Windows Division Steven Sinofsky noted, his team “will still be changing Windows 8, as we have done in past releases of Windows.”

Microsoft also says that it has increased personalization options for the Start screen and refined the way “the way people find and download apps through the Windows Store.” The touch-friendly Metro version of Internet Explorer now also supports Adobe’s Flash player and features a Do Not Track feature that is turned on by default.

Facebook users again under risk.  Recently a new security vulnerability found in Facbook application for iOS & Facebook application for Android. Researcher app developer Gareth Wright, who discovered the issue, said it comes down to Facebook’s native apps for the two platforms not encrypting your login credentials, meaning they can be easily swiped over a USB connection, or more likely, via malicious apps. Facebook has responded that this issue only applies to compromised or jailbroken devices. Means if you are using a jailbroken iOS device or a rooted Android device then your identity can easily be theft. Wright copied the hash and tested a few FQL queries. "Sure enough, I could pull back pretty much any information from my Facebook account. As of the 1st of May 2012 these tokens run out after 60 days but aside from that a simple .Net tool could easily snaffle this info and grab a fair whack of confirmed email addresses and marketing info.
“Not good, but then I had to wonder what the Facebook app stored. Popping into the Facebook application directory I quickly discovered a whole bunch of cached images and the com.Facebook.plist. “What was contained within was shocking. Not an access token but full oAuth key and secret in plain text. Surely though, these are encrypted or salted with the device ID. Worryingly, the expiry in the plist is set to 1 Jan 4001!" 

“Facebook’s iOS and Android applications are only intended for use with the manufacture provided operating system, and access tokens are only vulnerable if they have modified their mobile OS (i.e. jailbroken iOS or modded Android) or have granted a malicious actor access to the physical device,” a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement. “We develop and test our application on an unmodified version of mobile operating systems and rely on the native protections as a foundation for development, deployment and security, all of which is compromised on a jailbroken device. As Apple states, ‘unauthorized modification of iOS could allow hackers to steal personal information … or introduce malware or viruses.’ To protect themselves we recommend all users abstain from modifying their mobile OS to prevent any application instability or security issues.”
As for the USB connection scenario, Facebook says there’s no way to fix this problem. Note that in this case it doesn’t matter if your device is jailbroken or not, because whoever is doing the deed has physical access to your phone or tablet.

The new iPad tablet was released by Apple on Friday but yet again the same history repeated. Though in this release Apple forbids installing applications it has not approved, but hackers have found ways to "jailbreak" devices, or modify the code to allow unauthorized programs from alternative application stores such as Cydia.  But  fail to stop the hacker. The much-awaited device. Reportedly, the next-generation iPad was jailbroken within three hours of its market release on March 16. "Musclenerd," a member of the iPhone Dev Team, posted a screenshot on Twitter on Mar. 16 showing how he got root access on the latest Apple tablet. Another member, Stefan Esser, or @i0nic, posted a video showing an untethered jailbreak for his third-generation iPad. Finally, Grant Paul, or @chpwn, disclosed a third method to get root on the new iPad. There are three different methods to jailbreak the latest Apple iOS 5.1 software, and videos and screenshots posted over the weekend showed the hacks, according to the Dev-Team, which developed the first jailbreak tool.

In January, the tool Absinthe A5 was released, which could jailbreak both the iPhone 4S and iPad running software versions just before iOS 5.1. It took about 10 months to develop due to the difficulty the hacking group GreenPois0n found in trying to find a way to exploit the A5 processor. On the other hand, Apple is very strict about the control it exerts over its products, and iOS device owners have no choice but to buy and use software and content through Apple’s channels without a jailbreak. So it comes down to each users’ preferences: is it better to break the control and run the risk, or stay within Apple’s relatively safe walled garden with fewer choices?

The Windows 8 Consumer Preview offers a more robust experience for testing the world's most popular operating system and is available to the widest range of people yet following the initial release of the Windows 8 Developer Preview late last year. The Developer Preview received more than 3 million downloads.

PandaLabs Exclusive Report: Privacy Violations Will Be The Biggest Security Threat in 2012

Panda Security anti-malware laboratory, today announced its predictions for top security trends to watch for in the coming year. Cyber-espionage, along with privacy violations and social networking attacks facilitated by the increased use of mobile and tablet devices, will be the source of increased security threats over the coming months.

Cyber-espionage targeting companies and government agencies around the world will dominate corporate and national information security landscapes, with the integrity of classified and other protected information on the line. Trojans are expected to be the weapon of choice for hackers focused on these highly-sensitive targets.

According to Luis Corrons, technical director of PandaLabs, “We live in a world where all information is in digital form and is easily accessible if you know how. Today’s spies no longer need to infiltrate a building to steal information. As long as they have the necessary computer skills, they can wreak havoc and access even the best-kept secrets of organizations without ever leaving their homes.”

Consumers will continue to be targeted by cyber-criminals as they find ever more sophisticated ways to target social media sites for stealing personal data. Social engineering techniques exploiting users’ naïveté have become the weapon of choice for hackers targeting personally-identifiable information. “Social networking sites provide a space where users feel safe as they interact with friends and family. The problem is that attackers are creating malware that takes advantage of that false sense of security to spread their creations,” says Corrons. “It is very easy for cyber-criminals to trick users with generic messages like ‘Look, you’re on this video,’ for example. Sometimes, curiosity can be our own worst enemy.”

Summary of what PandaLabs predicts as the major security trends of 2012:-

• Mobile Malware:- A year ago, PandaLabs predicted a surge in cyber attacks on mobile phones, and the fact that Android has become the number one mobile target for cyber-crooks in 2011 confirms that prediction. That trend will continue in 2012, with a new focus on mobile payment methods using Near-Field Communications (NFC) as these applications become increasingly popular.

• Malware for Tablets:- Since tablets share the same operating system as smartphones, they are likely be targeted by the same malware. In addition, tablets might draw a special interest from cyber-crooks since people are using them for an increasing number of activities and are more likely to store sensitive data.

• Mac Malware:- As the market share of Mac users continues to grow, the number of threats will grow as well. Fortunately, Mac users are now more aware that they are not immune to malware attacks and are increasingly using antivirus programs to protect themselves. The number of malware specimens for Mac will continue to grow in 2012, although still at a slower rate than for PCs.

• PC Malware:- PC malware has grown exponentially over the past few years, and everything indicates that the trend will continue in 2012. Trojans, designed to sit silently on users’ computers, stealing information and transmitting it back to their handlers will continue to be cyber-crooks’ weapon of choice; 75 percent of new malware strains in 2011 were Trojans.

• SMBs Under Attack:- Financial institutions are fairly well protected these days against malware. But smaller businesses are easier and cheaper targets to attack, and their customer databases can be a real treasure trove for hackers, particularly if credit card and other financial data is stored “in the clear”. Unfortunately, many small to medium-sized companies do not have dedicated security teams, which makes them much more vulnerable.

• Windows 8:- While not scheduled until November 2012, the anticipated next version of Microsoft’s operating system will offer cyber-crooks new opportunities to create malicious software. Windows 8 will allow users to develop malware applications for virtually any device (PCs, tablets and smartphones) running this platform, although this will likely not take place until 2013.

Corrons concludes, “The malware game continues. As new technologies advance, cyber-crooks develop new modes of attack, often by simply adapting old techniques to the new platforms – which is an area software vendors need to pay attention to. In the end, though, it’s users’ false sense of security that is the hacker’s best friend.”
