BlackBerry PlayBook The Most Secure Tablet For BYOD Solution

BlackBerry PlayBook The Most Secure Tablet For BYOD Solution

Now a days users of tablet is increasing everyday. Millions of people across the globe are using tablet for both personal and professional purposes. While the number of users and purposes of using tablet are rising, besides the matter of privacy and security arises. There are many companies who are manufacturing tablet, but before choosing, we should know which one is secured than others. According to a recent report by Context Information Security -the PlayBook of BlackBerry is the only device among three top tablets that gives users a good, safe division between their work and personal computing, a recent technology audit concluded.  The report faulted the PlayBook, as well as the Apple iPad and the Samsung Galaxy Tab, for default settings that don't automatically encrypt backups, and for not offering complementary and compatible tools for IT teams to manage a large number of devices at the business level. According to Jonathan Roach, Principal Consultant at Context and author of the report "While the iPad and BlackBerry PlayBook performed better, both still have security deficiencies -- including desktop software that fails to encrypt backups by default." He also said "Context found the PlayBook to be the most work-ready personal tablet of the three, due to its Bridge application's excellent support of barriers between work and personal profiles,"
According to report by contrast, Apple's wildly popular iPad sold more than 17 million units last quarter. Context found the iPad to be the second-most-secure device, citing its "robust data protection and damage limitation facilities," but said on its news page that the device was still vulnerable to jailbreak attacks and "ineffective disk encryption unless a strong passcode policy is applied."
The report also found the Galaxy Tab's security features to be the least work-play ready, with weak disk-encryption support. The Galaxy Tab's lack of tools tailored to enterprise use makes it "very difficult to manage more than a small number of Galaxy Tabs in an enterprise environment," a point Apple also falls short on. The report criticized the Galaxy Tab's encryption as well. Even with encryption enabled, the report found that Samsung's device still "allows badly-written apps to store sensitive information on the unencrypted SD card." The report also praised all three tablets for their support of Exchange ActiveSync, a feature that allows crucial security settings to be managed from a central server running Microsoft software. But the study noted important differences among the devices that may make some tablets more appropriate for dual use in both the home and the office.
"Despite that security advantage, RIM only managed to ship 130,000 tablets last quarter. By contrast, Apple's wildly popular iPad sold more than 17 million units last quarter. Context found the iPad to be the second-most-secure device, citing its 'robust data protection and damage limitation facilities,' but said on its news page that the device was still vulnerable to jailbreak attacks and 'ineffective disk encryption unless a strong passcode policy is applied" -Jonathan added

2 Norwegian Teen Hackers of "TeaMp0isoN" Arrested By British Police

2 Norwegian Teen Hackers of "TeaMp0isoN" Arrested By British Police (PCeU)

Earlier in last month MI6 arrested the leader of TeaMp0isoN code named "TriCk" along with few other active members who ware directly involved behind the Denial of Service attack on MI6. Now two Norwegian teenagers, aged 18 and 19, have been arrested in connection with the distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack on the web site for the UK's Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) and for swamping British intelligence agency (MI6) hotline with automated Skype calls. These two hackers ware the active members of hacker collective TeaMp0isoN and MLT. These two suspects are arrested in Newcastle on Wednesday evening, and is being questioned about offences under the Computer Misuse Act. Computer equipment has been seized for forensic analysis - and no doubt investigators are hoping that they may find digital clues which could help uncover other suspected hackers. Erik Moestue, a Norwegian prosecutor, said "We have arrested the two we think were most important in these attacks, but we still want to talk to more people". The offence that the two stand accused of carries a maximum jail sentence of six years. "The case is still under investigation," added Moestue, noting that "It is still too early to say anything about the motive for the actions"
The authorities, no doubt, will be hoping to confirm that they have arrested the correct man. Certainly, MLT's Twitter account has been silent since 6:27pm on Wednesday evening. According to the authorities these arrest is part of an ongoing investigation by the Police Central e-Crime Unit (PCeU) division of the Metropolitan Police into various hacking gangs who have made headlines in the last year or so.
Earlier TeaMp0isoN was directly involved with Anonymous in #OpRobinHood #OpCensorThis. Also they have found SQL-i vulnerability on the Official NASA forum, and like this attack TeaMp0isoN also hacked English Defence League (EDL) ,T-Mobile USA, BlackBerry blog and many more

Zero-Day Vulnerability In Flash Patched By Adobe

Zero-Day Vulnerability In Flash Patched By Adobe
Yet another Zero day vulnerability found in Adobe Flash Player. Earlier hackers found zero-day exploit in flash player which can allow an attacker to hack you web-cam remotely later Adobe patched that. Before releasing Flash Player 11 Adobe issued new privacy policy and security update but now it seems that those are of zero use. 11.1.102.55 and earlier versions for Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Solaris, Adobe Flash Player 11.1.112.61 and earlier versions for Android 4.x, and Adobe Flash Player 11.1.111.5 and earlier versions for Android 3.x and 2.x. These vulnerabilities could cause a crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system.
Affected Version:-
  • Adobe Flash Player 11.1.102.55 and earlier versions for Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Solaris operating systems
  • Adobe Flash Player 11.1.112.61 and earlier versions for Android 4.x, and Adobe Flash Player 11.1.111.5 and earlier versions for Android 3.x and 2.x

Later Adobe confirmed that and immediately released a patch to close the security hole. Through this security release Adobe also resolves a universal cross-site scripting vulnerability that could be used to take actions on a user's behalf on any website or webmail provider, if the user visits a malicious website. There are reports that this vulnerability (CVE-2012-0767) is being exploited in the wild in active targeted attacks designed to trick the user into clicking on a malicious link delivered in an email message (Internet Explorer on Windows only). Google's Chrome Web browser, which directly integrates Flash into its software (unlike competing browsers) also received an update to reflect Adobe's patch update.
Recommendation From Adobe:-
Adobe recommends users of Adobe Flash Player 11.1.102.55 and earlier versions for Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Solaris update to Adobe Flash Player 11.1.102.62. Users of Adobe Flash Player 11.1.112.61 and earlier versions on Android 4.x devices should update to Adobe Flash Player 11.1.115.6. Users of Adobe Flash Player 11.1.111.5 and earlier versions for Android 3.x and earlier versions should update to Flash Player 11.1.111.6. For further details click here.
Earlier in 2011 another Flash Player bug found in Blackberry OS & later fixed by the developer and also last year adobe closes serious security hole in Acrobat 9X & Adobe Reader.

DingleBerry A Tool To Jailbreak BlackBerry Playbook

Three developers have reportedly bypassed Research In Motion's security, gaining root access to the BlackBerry Playbook. The trio -- currently known as xpvqs, neuralic and cmw (Chris Wade) -- demonstrated the feat in a few videos this week. In one of the clips, neuralic fiddles with the backlight and LEDs through a command prompt.

Video Demonstration :-

The hackers will release their discovery next week in the form of a tool amusingly dubbed "DingleBerry," allowing fellow tinkerers to jailbreak their PlayBook. RIM was quick to respond to the claims, vowing to investigate the exploit. "If it is determined that the claim is accurate, RIM will follow its standard response process to develop and release a software update that is designed to minimize adverse impact to our customers or carrier partners," the company said.
The exploit could dent RIM's reputation because the BlackBerry brand prides itself on security. The company has been two steps behind Apple and Google when it comes to consumer smartphones and tablets, so it has attempted to distinguish itself in the enterprise market by harping on BlackBerry's superior security.
For instance, the PlayBook is the only tablet cleared for use by the US federal government after receiving a FIPS certification earlier this year. On the bright side, "DingleBerry" will not affect the company's mobile phones, which run on a different operating system (the PlayBook is powered by a QNX-based OS).

BlackBerry 6 WebKit Vulnerability Patched, RIM Publishes Full Security Advisory

This latest security advisory goes to show why RIM’s current model for carrier approved OS updates is not ideal. RIM put out what they call a security notice about a BlackBerry 6 WebKit browser vulnerability back in March of this year for an exploit found in the BlackBerry 6 Browser at Pwn2Own that month. RIM said back then that devices updated to OS 6.0.0.526+ were safe from the vulnerability. They then finally issued a security advisory this week for the same old vulnerability with quite a few more details about it. The reason RIM took so long to release the advisory was because RIM had to wait for carriers to approve the security software update. RIM provided the fix within two weeks of learning of the vulnerability. Now SIX MONTHS LATER RIM has found that “a sufficient number of wireless services providers” have made the update available to their customers.
Overview:-
This security advisory addresses three specific vulnerabilities affecting the implementation of open source WebKit technology in the BlackBerry Browser in BlackBerry 6. Successful exploitation of the vulnerabilities requires the BlackBerry smartphone user to browse to a website that the attacker has maliciously designed. A successful attack could result in remote code execution (RCE) on a smartphone running BlackBerry 6. An attacker exploiting these vulnerabilities could read or write to the built-in media storage section of a BlackBerry smartphone or to the media card but could not access user data that the email, calendar, and contact applications store in the application storage (the internal file system that stores application data and user data) of the BlackBerry smartphone.
The most severe of the three vulnerabilities has a CVSS score of 6.8. The least severe has a CVSS score of 5.0. At this time there is no evidence of the vulnerabilities being used in attacks against the BlackBerry platform, and RIM is not aware of any impact to BlackBerry customers as a result of these vulnerabilities.
Note:- KB26132 was previously published as a Security Notice to responsibly advise customers about the existence of one of the three vulnerabilities, which had been publicly disclosed, and provide workaround options in lieu of a software update to address that issue for all affected customers. This Security Advisory replaces that Security Notice and provides full details of publicly available software updates that address that issue and two related issues, and urges affected customers to upgrade.

BlackBerry Service Fully Restored After The Largest Ever Network Disruption

RIM's BlackBerry service was fully restored around the world early Thursday morning after what the company called its largest-ever network disruption. Details on the outage, which began Monday and affected millions of users around the globe, came out during a conference call Thursday morning with top executives from BlackBerry maker Research in Motion.
RIM founder and co-CEO Mike Lazaridis said the BlackBerry service's infrastructure "suffered a hardware error," and then the problem cascaded. A backup system "did not work the way we intended." Lazaridis said RIM is "working with vendors to fix the particular error that occurred Monday," but he declined to name specific vendors.
The BlackBerry service outage started in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. By Tuesday it spread to South America. That night, RIM assured customers that the glitch had been identified and was "now being resolved" -- but on Wednesday it got worse as customers in the United States and Canada were hit. The outage primarily affected text messaging and Internet access, leaving some voice calling services operational. Earlier Thursday, Lazaridis posted a taped message on the company's website, saying, "We've let many of you down." At a teleconference on Wednesday, executives pledged that despite a huge data backlog, RIM will not drop any e-mails -- all messages will eventually be delivered. The reps dodged several questions about make-good efforts for customers.

Latest Blackberry Play Book Software Update By RIM

RIM Offers Up Latest BlackBerry PlayBook Software Update [BlackBerry PlayBook Software Update 1.0.7.2942 Now Available, Brings Improved Wi-Fi Connectivity, Faster Bridge Pairing & More. It has been just over a months time since we saw the last update for the BlackBerry PlayBook and while this latest is not adding the one item people seem to be complaining about most — it is nice to see it arrive so quickly. Not to mention, this update does appear to have a few perks for those who are actually using and enjoying their PlayBook.
That being said, this latest update will bring your PlayBook up to version 1.0.7.2942. The update measures in at 80MB in size and the tablet does require a reboot after the update process has run its course. The update does not contain a bunch of new features, instead it takes care of a few bugs and also brings something called differential updates. In terms of the bug fixes, those deal with Wi-Fi connectivity and the BlackBerry Bridge.

The New Features You Will Get:-

  • Improved Wi-Fi connectivity to WEP networks
  • Faster pairing between a BlackBerry smartphone and BlackBerry
PlayBook tablet via the BlackBerry Bridge app, and faster attachment
opening via BlackBerry Bridge.
And now getting to the differential updates, this one is described as;

“The differential updates feature allows us to update only the sections of the BlackBerry Tablet OS that require updating. This should result in smaller download file sizes and therefore faster updating.”

All said and done, nothing major but enough that it should still be welcomed by regular users. Of course, given the last update was 1.0.7 and this one is 1.0.7.2942 I am not sure anyone could have really expected to see anything major included. Bottom line here, despite what many think about the PlayBook — it is sort of refreshing to see that RIM has not given up just yet. Especially considering what we recently watched HP do with the TouchPad. And in the end, I will maintain my previous statements in that while the PlayBook could use some software improvements and more apps — the hardware is super nice.

Dubai Police Is Taking Steps To Stop Cyber Crime

People still fall prey to cyber crime despite their knowledge of risks and repeated warnings from police, with 271 cases reported in the first six months of this year, Dubai Police has said. Complaints filed this year include 110 scams, 108 cases of stolen phone line and 70 cases of blackmail, threatening and libel. "Although we issue many warnings through various means to inform the public about lottery and free gift scams which are sent to their emails, some still fall for them," Major Rashid Lootah, Director of cyber evidence at Dubai Police's Forensic Evidence and Criminology Department.
When these people are contacted by scammers who inform them that they had won a prize and need to send their account numbers or transfer money as fees to be able to receive the award, many still comply.

"People respond to these scams and then report them after they lose their money and find that they have been tricked," Maj Lootah said.
He also urged BlackBerry users to be aware and not add strangers to BB Messenger, since police received many complaints from people who were blackmailed after someone they added managed to hack their phone and get hold of their personal information and pictures.

"Do not open links that appear when you browse through your BlackBerry, because most of them contain viruses that enable the other party to hack your phone and view all your files and pictures," he said.Cyber evidence specialists processed 261 cases in the first half of this year, including piracy, theft, dishonesty, harassment, intellectual copyright violations and others.
Other cases include forgery of credit cards and duplicating the websites of some major companies and service providers, which lure people into logging in and making a payment on these websites using their credit card information.

BlackBerry blog hacked TriCk (TeaMp0isoN)

Research In Motion found its official BlackBerry blog hacked Tuesday morning, following statements the company made regarding the London riots. Rioters used RIM’s BlackBerry Messenger to communicate far more than using other social networks like Twitter or Facebook. In response to the riots, RIM tweeted, “We feel for those impacted by the riots in London. We have engaged with the authorities to assist in any way we can.”
As we noted yesterday, that seems to indicate that BBM isn’t as private as some rioters may have hoped. In response, a group calling itself TeaMp0isoN hacked the publicly facing Inside BlackBerry blog. The site is now down.
Before the site went down, we were able to capture the following message from the hackers:

Hacked Site:-

http://blogs.blackberry.com/

Mirror Link:-
http://www.zone-h.org/mirror/id/14614130

This hack is a response to this statement by RIM:-

“We feel for those impacted by this weekend’s riots in London. We have engaged with the authorities to assist in any way we can. As in all markets around the world Where BlackBerry is available, we cooperate with local telecommunications operators, law enforcement and regulatory officials. Similar to other technology providers in the UK we comply with The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act and co-operate fully with the Home Office and UK police forces.”

    Dear Rim;
You Will _NOT_ assist the UK Police because if u do innocent members of the public who were at the wrong place at the wrong time and owned a blackberry will get charged for no reason at all, the Police are looking to arrest as many people as possible to save themselves from embarrassment…. if you do assist the police by giving them chat logs, gps locations, customer information & access to peoples BlackBerryMessengers you will regret it, we have access to your database which includes your employees information; e.g – Addresses, Names, Phone Numbers etc. – now if u assist the police, we _WILL_ make this information public and pass it onto rioters…. do you really want a bunch of angry youths on your employees doorsteps? Think about it…. and don’t think that the police will protect your employees, the police can’t protect themselves let alone protect others….. if you make the wrong choice your database will be made public, save yourself the embarrassment and make the right choice. don’t be a puppet..

p.s – we do not condone in innocent people being attacked in these riots nor do we condone in small businesses being looted, but we are all for the rioters that are engaging in attacks on the police and government…. and before anyone says “the blackberry employees are innocent” no they are not! They are the ones that would be assisting the police

Nokia will Launch Mobiles with Microsoft Platform In 2011

Nokia is facing steep competition from competitors in several products. At the top end of the market it is struggling against smart phones such as Apple's iPhone, Research in Motion's Blackberry as well as Android, and on the lower end against emerging market phone makers who are dropping their prices.Nokia will start to deliver the Windows-based mobile phones in bulk next year, CEO Stephen Elop said in a speech at a technology trade show in Singapore. Finnish handset maker Nokia Corp. plans to introduce its first mobile phones using the Microsoft Windows operating system this year, the company's chief executive said Tuesday.  "Our primary smartphone strategy is to focus on the Windows phone," Elop said. "I have increased confidence that we will launch our first device based on the Windows platform later this year and we will ship our product in volume in 2012." Elop has acknowledged Nokia has been too slow to meet the challenge from competitors and has hinted that the company would drop its cellphone prices. Last month, the company warned both sales and profit margins in the second quarter would be substantially below previous forecasts. Nokia also unveiled Tuesday its N9 smartphone, which is based on the MeeGo platform. The company said it plans to launch up to 10 new Symbian-based smartphones over the next 12 months. Elop said the N9 would go on sale later this year, but declined to specify the date or price. Nokia developed MeeGo last year in a partnership with U.S. chipmaker Intel Corp. In February, Nokia turned to Microsoft's Windows Phone software as its main smartphone operating system.

ESET Released Antivirus for Android in Beta

ESET is well-known in the PC arena for its NOD32 antivirus and ESET Smart Security suite. The company's existing mobile security product supports Windows Mobile and Symbian devices. ESET Mobile Security for Android Beta (free, direct) extends the same protection to the Android realm.
ESET Mobile naturally includes protection against Android malware. It checks processes and new apps in real time and also scans for threats on demand. Some mobile security products eliminate almost all antivirus configuration settings. Lookout Mobile Security is an example. ESET includes a full set of configuration choices, much like what you'd find in a PC-based antivirus. It uses heuristic analysis, it can quarantine suspect files, and it optionally scans inside archives, among other things.
Like Kaspersky Mobile Security 9, Norton Mobile Security 2.0 Beta, and others ESET Mobile can respond to coded SMS messages by locking the phone, transmitting its GPS location, or wiping all data from the phone. You can't track the phone by logging in to a Web site the way you can with GadgetTrak Mobile Security for Android & Blackberry 3.1, Mobile Superhero, and others, but ESET's SMS response to a location request includes a Google Maps link.
A thief who attempts to evade ESET's protection by swapping out the SIM card won't get far. Insertion of a SIM card not already marked as trusted will cause the phone to automatically lock and secretly send an alert SMS to one or more predefined contacts. The alert SMS contains the new SIM card's phone number, the IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) number and the phone's IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number. ESET also protects against uninstallation on Android 2.2 and later.
ESET's antispam feature isn't as ambitious as that of PrivacyStar and Mr. Mr. Number, which use crowdsourcing to block known spam callers. You can set ESET to block specific blacklisted numbers or to block all incoming calls and texts that don't come from your contacts. The app retains information about blocked contact attempts, so you can review the contact log and make any necessary adjustments.
The most unusual feature ESET offers is the security audit. This isn't an audit of app permissions like that found in Lookout and in Webroot Mobile Security for Android. ESET audits the device daily and automatically fixes everything it can. You can also manually run an audit at any time. ESET alerts if battery power or free disk space are too low. It reports security problems with Bluetooth, GPS, and GSM Network as well as with installed applications and stored data. The included Task Manager lets you view running processes and terminate non-system processes.
This app, currently in beta testing, can be downloaded from the Android Market or directly from the ESET Web site.

Google Vs. Microsoft (For Cloud)

Google has locked horns with Microsoft in a high-stakes showdown to dominate what could be the next great mother lode of Internet-derived profits. Each is seeking to attract businesses to lease its hosted versions of essential communications and office programs, instead of maintaining these basic tools in house. It's an emerging form of digital office outsourcing — often referred to as cloud computing — one which Microsoft's outspoken CEO, Steve Ballmer, has vowed to own. "At Microsoft, for the cloud, we're all in," Ballmer told an auditorium full of University of Washington computer science students last spring. "It's just a great time to be all-in and really drive the next generation of technology advances." The software giant recently released a near-final test version of Office 365, a hybrid of its ubiquitous productivity software suite. Tuned for the Internet, Office 365 extends the slow-but-steady advances the company has been making since 2002 in delivering business programs over the Web, much as a utility delivers water or electricity. But now that's being challenged again by search-advertising company Google. At its recent Google I/O developer conference, Google made a move to steal some of Ballmer's thunder. There, Google unveiled Chromebooks, stripped-down computers optimized to run its hosted messaging, calendaring and collaboration tools. "Chromebooks is actually a huge leap forward for cloud computing," says Dave Girouard, Google's president of enterprise. "We're excited about putting more pieces of the puzzle together. Our aim is to be No.1 in cloud computing." Delivering software over the Internet is nothing new. Cloud computing occurs when an individual accesses services housed on a third-party server rather than a local PC. Consumers use cloud computing with free Web mail services and popular social-networking sites. The race among Amazon, Google and Apple to popularize cloud-based storage of your music collection is yet another example. And Salesforce.com and NetSuite have long supplied businesses with specialized customer relationship management and bookkeeping programs as hosted services. Yet, a confluence of developments has buoyed the big pushes by Microsoft and Google to extend cloud computing to basic workplace tools: e-mail, messaging, calendaring, word processing, spreadsheets, slide presentations and file sharing. Many companies that hunkered down during the recession are eager to refresh aging systems. Security has become a major pain, and everything is getting more complex as mobile-device use rises. And capital spending budgets are as tight as ever. A desire to become more efficient and reduce long-term costs was identified as an influential factor by 60% of information technology buyers from government agencies recently surveyed by CompTIA, a non-profit association for IT pros. For the tech companies wrestling for the future of office software, the stakes are high. Tech researcher Gartner forecasts that global spending on e-mail, collaboration and cloud-based applications will more than double to $20.7 billion by 2014, up from $9.8 billion this year.

Cloud savings
Now cloud computing is getting a second look by often-conservative IT buyers because Internet connectivity has become ubiquitous, and data storage, dirt cheap, says Wes Miller, industry analyst at research firm Directions on Microsoft. "But the real reason people are flocking to it has to do with saving money, whether directly or indirectly." In many cases, the first basic tool companies look to outsource is e-mail. Shane Ochotny, tech architect at Tampa General Hospital, had four technicians working full time maintaining e-mail for 7,000 employees, including 1,000 physicians, spread through the hospital, a clinic and separate administrative offices. After testing several hosted e-mail services, including Google's Gmail, Ochotny chose to outsource e-mail, instant messaging and video conferencing to Microsoft; the software giant first began offering hosted e-mail in 2002, and it added other services in 2005 and 2008. That freed four technicians to create a customized program that provides instant e-mail access to new workers. Next up for the hospital's techs: developing a way to integrate video conferencing with instant messaging and voice over Internet. While some analysts worry that cloud outsourcing will ultimately cut employment, Tampa General's experience is likely more the norm. "Moving stuff that isn't central to the business into the cloud frees up IT people to work on systems that are central," says Rob Helm, analyst at Directions on Microsoft. The hospital is one of the early testers of Office 365, which features a lightweight version of Office that can be accessed by workers from any device with an Internet browser. Ochotny is prepping a test to see if Microsoft's approach to cloud computing — which continues to require traditional desktop PC software in combination with new hosted services — can be tweaked to let doctors and nurses instant message each other on their iPhones, as well as BlackBerry, Android and Windows Phone 7 smartphones. "Since we spend less time on maintenance, we can focus on innovation and better use of existing tools," says Ochotny. Microsoft's huge advantage over Google: "The sheer number of companies of literally every size for whom Office is the de facto productivity suite," says Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT. "After years of fumbling with its online strategy, Microsoft now has a viable plan with Office 365 to entice enterprises to dip a toe in."

Google’s cloud
Google's strategy is 100% cloud-based. Basic versions of Gmail and its office productivity suite, Google Apps, are free to consumers; businesses pay a monthly per-user fee for commercial versions. It all runs through a Web browser on servers owned and maintained by Google. This arrangement works especially well for businesses looking to extend Internet communications and file sharing to managers in far-flung operations or to workers on the factory floor or out in the field. Jason's Deli, a Beaumont, Texas-based restaurant chain, uses Google Docs to schedule meetings, share reports and plan events among managers working in 230 eateries, five corporate offices and two food distribution hubs. "Our use cases are wide and varied," says Kevin Verde, chief information officer of Jason's Deli. "We currently have 10,000 documents that our users are collaborating on using Google Docs." When Google approached Jason's Deli about testing Chromebooks, Verde says, he was skeptical that a device built solely to access a Web browser, and which could not store files nor run applications as a tablet or laptop PC could, would prove useful. But he distributed test models to sales reps who spend all day pitching catering services to schools, churches and local businesses. He was pleasantly surprised. Using Chromebooks, the reps could tap into spreadsheets and monitor successful sales campaigns in other regions. They could access customer relationship management programs hosted by Salesforce.com. Verde is now a Chromebook fan. "The administration side of the Chromebook is almost effortless, and that is a big deal for corporate IT," he says. But can Google make any meaningful encroachment on Microsoft's turf? Chromebook, while intriguing, is going head-to-head against tablets and netbooks, priced roughly the same. "The competitive landscape has been complicated by the emergence of tablets, particularly the iPad," analyst King says. "Though tablets essentially offer the same browser-centric experience Google is promoting, they also enhance the user experience via a wide variety of apps." Google remains undaunted. In an effort to entice Microsoft Office fans to give Google Docs a whirl, the search giant in March 2010 reportedly spent $25 million to acquire start-up DocVerse, launched by two former Microsoft engineers. DocVerse subsequently came out in February as Google Connect, a free browser plug-in that lets users access Microsoft Office files using Google Apps. "It really knocks down some of the last reasons people have for not wanting to use Google," says Girouard. "This makes it easier." Microsoft swiftly counterpunched., with officials lambasting Google Connect in the tech media for ruining the formatting of complicated Office docs. Lately, they've been spinning Connect as a concession that Office cannot be displaced. "Google was trying to shoehorn a consumer offering, Google Apps, into an enterprise value proposition, by telling customers, 'You don't need Office anymore,'" says Tim O'Brien, general manager of Microsoft's platform strategy. "That strategy failed. So now they've changed tack and are telling customers, 'We don't think Office is going anywhere soon, so let us show you how our product can work alongside of it.'" Maybe, but Microsoft can't get complacent, analysts say. Google claims more than 30 million "active users" of Google Apps at some 3million businesses, with more than 3,000 new sign-ups every day. That includes midsize companies, such as Virgin America and National Geographic, and a few large ones, such as Jaguar Land Rover, Motorola andInterContinental Hotels. "Google is a serious wannabe contender," says King. "The search giant has to be taken seriously if only because it has deep pockets and a strong will."

New BlackBerry 7 OS promises improved performance but no Android apps Flash

Research In Motion's (NASDAQ: RIMM) upcoming BlackBerry 7 operating system for smartphones won't include several of the key features that were added to RIM's new BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, a RIM executive said during the company's annual BlackBerry World event.
RIM's vice president of handheld software product management, Andrew Bocking, said smartphones running the new OS will not support Android applications. The PlayBook launched last month with two optional "app players" that provide a runtime environment for BlackBerry Java applications as well as apps running Android 2.3.
Flash also isn't included in the BlackBerry 7 plan as RIM is putting its focus on the new QNX OS to support Flash content in the web browser. The upcoming BlackBerry 7-based Bold 9900's 1.2 GHz processor is supposed to fulfill Adobe's hardware requirements for Flash support, PCMag.com noted.
Bocking also said that BlackBerry 7 will not be backward-compatible with previous BlackBerry smartphones. This new OS runs solely on dual-core devices, and the existing RIM portfolio does not include any dual-core units.
BlackBerry 7 smartphones are expected to go on sale this summer and they promise improved performance and built-in support for Near Field Communications technology. BlackBerry 7 powers the new Liquid Graphics touchscreen, which touts faster, smoother performance for touch-based navigation, web browsing, pictures, video and graphics-intensive gaming. According to RIM, Liquid Graphics offers up to 60 frames-per-second performance with instant UI action/response. In addition to Liquid Graphics performance gains, the new BlackBerry 7 browser includes a new just in time JavaScript compiler to improve web page load time speeds alongside support for additional HTML5 elements.
The other new features are voice-activated search and BlackBerry Balance, which separates personal content from corporate content on the smartphone.
It's not known exactly when the PlayBook's QNX OS will run on smartphones, but Al Hilwa, program director of applications development software with IDC, said it's clear that the OS will come to smartphones in the next year.
"Major platform transitions take time and what the Playbook launch shows, if anything beyond a really capable piece of hardware, is that rushing devices to market before they are baked doesn't help anybody," he said. "RIM should take its time to bring out QNX phones incrementally and with the right capabilities. The Playbook rollout has been a tough software experiment, but it is an experiment that will help the QNX phones be that much more robust when they come."

BlackBerry phones hit by ZeuS Trojan virus

If you thought your phone is virus-proof, think again. There is a virus on the block that has started affecting all BlackBerry devices. And the worse part is that an user will never know whether her phone has been affected or not.

Amit Nath, country manager, India and SAARC at Trend Micro, claims researchers at the firm were alerted to the discovery of a ZeuS Trojan specifically targeting BlackBerry users. It aims to monitor users' private information especially when they conduct mobile banking, says Nath.

"It does not display any graphical user interface that can prompt users about the infection. Instead, it removes itself from the list of applications. The virus can view, delete and forward text messages, block calls, change the administrator on the device and block phone numbers. It allows the hacker to change the telephone number the device sends all the data to in the event that it gets shut down," he said.

"Although there is no definite data on how many phones have been hit, we are sure it is spreading fast even in India. However, as users mostly don't get to know they have been infected, it's difficult to fix a number. We have detected instances of the virus on our clients' networks. This virus have the capability of spreading on its own and infecting phones that do not have anti-virus software installed," Nath points out.
Jagannath Patnaik, director, channel sales south Asia at Kaspersky Lab , says: "There has been a new wave of malware attack that has started affecting BlackBerry and it has originated from Poland. The aim is to extract banking passwords."

An email sent to Research In Motion , manufacturers of BlackBerry phones, went unanswered despite repeated reminders.
Trend Micro Researchers, the ZeuS Trojan is capable of blocking calls, registering a new administrator, adding and removing sender, switch the phone on or off remotely and, most important, hiding text messages and sending it to the hacker without the user's knowledge.

Abhijit Limaye, director, development at Symantec, said: "BlackBerry has a reputation as being a secure platform. However, it is still susceptible to malware threats and has issued advice documentation for customers to minimise risks. They have also released software applications to help customers protect their data." Vinoo Thomas, technical product manager at McAfee Labs , said: "While Trojan virus can replicate and spread on its own, there are a few spyware that needs to be loaded manually. One can buy the spyware programs like MobiSpy, MobiStelath and FlexiSpy for between $40 and $80."

One reason for infection could be downloading of out-of-box applications on a BlackBerry. Zaki Qureshi, a professional ethical hacker, said: "BlackBerry phones have high security features, but if users instal out-of-the-box applications, chances of infection rises."
